    Love the term "automotive backpacking". I always say I like vehicle based dispersed camping but refuse to call it over landing for fear it will suddenly cost too much. Hang in there Matt.

    Hi Matt, I've seen your videos on youtube and congratulations on it. I'm Pablo, I live in Santiago de Chile, I have an LR Discovery 1Vogue V8 automatic I've traveled all of southern Chile Patagonia to Tierra del Fuego, a trip of 5300 miles. just a tire without air.
    Going up to the Andes mountains warmed up. I waited for the temperature to drop, I checked the water level and it was normal. continue trip. back about 320 miles. and when checking the level I had to fill with 1.5 liters of antifreeze. From there if I drive two hours consumes 1 liter of antifreeze.
    I checked the radiator, hoses I did a bypass in the heating to rule out the heating radiator. No leaks under the Discovery. There are also no bubbles in the coolant reservoir. The exhaust pipe drops of water. The engine sounds and works well, the normal spark plugs.
    The mechanic thinks it's not the head gasket.
    Matt, can you please help me?
    sorry for my bad english.
    Thank you.

    “Automotive backpacking” is how my wife and I view our excursions. We have backpacked for years so when we started adventuring in a vehicle, we took what we knew and went with it. Looking forward to future episodes!

    Man, Love you approach to overlanding. It's same as mine. I started watching your videos before starting to resurrect a 95 disco 300 tdi and in the middle came other videos from brittanica and trailfitter. Suddenly, when I finished the restoration this video came up to me. As everyone around I'm sorry for your last events. Keep rowing, you'll be fine.
    By the way, in Spain to fill up my beast it's 150€ of diesel. Everywhere else in Europe is much more! Feel grateful. LOL. Hugs.

    Just found your channel because of the Disco content. Sorry to see it go but you’re absolutely right about the overlanding stuff. It isn’t sustainable with prices the way they are, and in all honesty a Subaru can get me to pretty much any where I’ve been that my land rovers that are packed to gills with gear took me. I’m southeast of Tucson maybe our paths will cross. I’ve been where you’re at I know what your going through. Keep on doing what you love and finding new things to do.

    Sorry about you’re unforeseen life changes, that must be hard. Thanks for recognizing the impacts of our use of these vehicles, too. I mostly use my D1 for trips to our river lot or errands where drayage is required. I justify it, or at least mitigate those impacts, by doing equal amounts of errands with a Honda CT125. That raises my average MPG to about 75.

    I´ve just came across your channel, I first saw the video when you bought the Disco -well, the wife -, and then I saw this. Sorry you separated. The disco still looks good. As a +20 years vehicle, repairs will need to be done, and will still need. But it´s a vehicle to withstand hard roads, no doubt about it. It´s almost a Range Rover Classic, since the Disco I was built over the RR chassis and drivetrain. Old school 4x4s are the best, IMO. Take care!

    • @MattKester
      @MattKester  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tell you what, my decision to keep her verses the 4Runner pretty much came down to the fact that I know I can maintain her with minimal tools and with a lot more ease. Sure, she'll need more work, but at least it's work you can do in the driveway!

    I feel that people either want their vehicle to look like an overlanding rig and not go anywhere or have a minimalist approach and take their vehicle out on an adventure. I have to be realistic with my truck because it’s a daily driver as well. Driving around with 2000 lbs of armor and big mud terrain tires would kill my already poor gas mileage. I share your view that I would rather get to my destination and enjoy it rather than waste money on upgrades and equipment I really don’t need. Good Luck and enjoy the new adventures.

    • @MattKester
      @MattKester  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When she's in motion, she holds pretty strong to the 180-190 range. It's the slow crawl in lines or idling that will bring the temps up to the 210-212 range before I lose my nerve and kick up the revs. If you're hitting 212 somewhere flat like Houston doing 70, I'd definitely start taking a look at the cooling system.

    I'm wondering looking back now would you buy another Land Rover or something else?

    • @MattKester
      @MattKester  ปีที่แล้ว

      You know, that’s a great question. There’s a lot to unpack there, but yeah, I would buy another one, provided to had the means to feed it and maintain it. Honestly, the 25 year rule is coming up on TD5 powered D2’s, and that’s really tempting. I also have a curiosity for LR3/4’s, but that might have to wait until I strike it rich somewhere else. The Disco was definitely an amazing experience for me, and it will be in my memory as one of the favorites of my lifetime, I just don’t know if I’ll ever be able to have another D1, but that stems more from the negative emotions behind the other relationship that was unraveling in my life at the same time I iowned it.

      I am torn between the land rover and the 4runner. Anything close to the same price has the 4runner with 300000 miles

    • @MattKester
      @MattKester  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimmybradley6654 Yeah, the Toyota tax is real, that's for sure but they are damn good machines. To compare the two, the Disco was hands down the better off-roader and much more comfortable for long drives on the highway, but it was a lot more expensive in fuel cost and time spent wrenching. Although, I'd rather work on it than the Toyota any day. The 4Runner is capable enough for most anything people would want to do, gets better fuel mileage, and has a higher perceived value, but parts are more and working on it is a pain in the ass. That's really the best way I can compare the two. Oh, and the Disco feels like it actually has a soul.

    I keep telling people that the Disco 2 is, in my opinion, the apex of LR design - Solid axles, simple mechanical systems and a level of comfort that is still perfectly acceptable today.
    Thing is, I feel that way about the D2 because it's got the TD5 engine which - I hate to break the news to 300tdi worshippers - is a much better engine than the D1 had.
    In the USA, where all(?) Disco's had V8s, The D1 IS probably a better choice because everything just got more complicated on the D2 without there being any real benefit in return.

    • @MattKester
      @MattKester  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Si! I really need to investigate those import loopholes here a little better to see if we can't get a TD5 D2 sooner. If you go by the 25 year rule (which mostly pertains to crash safety) it means we can bring a 99 in in 2024, but there's also the 15 year rule for emissions compliance, and since the D2 was sold here and approved, I wonder if you could argue the case that a TD5 ought qualify under the 15 year rule and not the 25? Stupid politics!
