I LOVE YOU | Stephanie Trick & Paolo Alderighi
Paul Whiteman was called on to provide a pit orchestra for a 1923 musical called “Little Jessie James,” and he engaged a colleague of his, Harry Archer, both as bandleader as well as composer for the production. With the collaboration of lyricist Harlan Thompson, Archer wrote “I Love You” for this show, which became not only the big hit of his career but also the most popular song of the musicals of that season.

I’VE GOT MY LOVE TO KEEP ME WARM | Stephanie Trick & Paolo Alderighi

“I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm” was written by Irving Berlin in 1937 and was first used in the film musical, “On the Avenue,” featuring Dick Powell and Alice Faye. The song has been recorded widely, and notably appears on one of the duet albums that Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong recorded for Verve in 1957, “Ella and Louis Again.” The film, “On the Avenue,” featured other Berlin songs l...

Composer Vernon Duke and lyricist Yip Harburg wrote the tune “Suddenly” in 1934 for the show “Ziegfeld Follies,” which starred comedian, singer, and actress Fanny Brice. It’s a delightful rarity, and I want to thank pianist and collector Alex Hassan for sharing the sheet music with me some years ago. Duke was the composer of such lovely tunes as “I Can’t Get Started,” “Autumn in New York” and “...

Cole Porter wrote “Just One of Those Things” in 1935 for the Broadway show “Jubilee,” the show for which he wrote another hit song, “Begin the Beguine.” Although Porter led an intensely social life, he took his songwriting seriously. His curiosity would prompt him to get a book on anything he felt ignorant about. Porter, who claimed to do his best work after midnight, had incredible concentrati...

We hope you enjoy our arrangement of two of the most quintessential Christmas tunes! Irving Berlin wrote “White Christmas” for the 1942 film “Holiday Inn,” which starred Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. It was later featured in another film of all music by Berlin, “White Christmas” (1954), with Bing, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. Crosby’s recording of it was an international sensati...

Count Basie and his band recorded an explosively swinging album in 1957, with arrangements by Neal Hefti, entitled “The Atomic Mr. Basie.” The collaboration of Hefti and Basie was quite fruitful, as Hefti knew exactly how to put the band and its top-flight soloists in the best possible light (in this case, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis on tenor sax). We have been wanting to adapt the breathless and dri...

Ivor Novello was a Welsh composer, actor and playwright, and wrote scores for musical comedies and revues. (Incidentally, he collaborated on an English musical, “Theodore & Co,” with a young Jerome Kern in 1916.) In total, Novello wrote or co-wrote 14 plays, 8 musicals and more than 250 songs. Novello’s first hit was “Keep the Home Fires Burning,” which resonated greatly with people especially ...

1923 was a landmark year for pianist and composer Jelly Roll Morton. He made his first solo piano recordings as well as his first ensemble sides that year. He composed “Kansas City Stomp” in 1919 and it was named not for the midwestern city but for a bar in Tijuana, Mexico. Morton recorded it twice, once as a piano solo in 1923 and then with his band, the Red Hot Peppers, in 1928. ▶️ If you enj...

This ragtime piece was written in 1915 by Gus Chandler, Bert White and Henry Cohen. Several decades later Harry Warren and Ralph Blane adapted it into a swinging vocal version called “Cuttin’ Capers” for the 1949 musical film, “My Dream Is Yours,” starring Doris Day. There is some research by ragtime historian Bill Edwards suggesting that Cohen got the idea for a strain of “Canadian Capers” fro...

“Little Rock Getaway” was composed by pianist Joe Sullivan in 1933, and he made recordings of it both that year and in 1935. Sullivan’s career began in Chicago, and his musical inclination helped him find work as a sideman with dance bands and accompanying silent films. His main influences were Earl Hines and Fats Waller. While playing with Bing Crosby, he wrote “Little Rock Getaway,” Little Ro...

“In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree” was written by Egbert Van Alstyne and Harry Williams in 1905. Van Alstyne wrote about 400 compositions, including rags, novelty songs, and ballads. He noted that the inspiration for this song came from his childhood, which he spent in bucolic places. His family vacationed in Michigan in a home surrounded by white pines and apple orchards, which is supposedly...

“Hindustan” was written in 1918 by Harold Weeks and Oliver Wallace. Incidentally, the success of this tune wasn’t lost on George Gershwin and lyricist Irving Caesar and they were waiting in the wings with a new pop song in the same style of “Hindustan,” ready for release as soon as the popularity of “Hindustan” began to diminish. The song they published was “Swanee,” which turned out to be the ...
