In the Ukrainian language, the sound G is also soft, we pronounce it exactly the same as in the phrase "Ég er konna" and as in the word “saga”. In the Ukrainian language there is no hard G sound at all, only soft, with only a few exceptions.

Takk! That was a very interesting grammatical twist on the "góðan daginn" expression. I'm Norwegian so this rings a familiar bell to me, but what's even more interesting is that we also do the "wrong" adjective form. Norwegian has lost the case system in general (officially; many dialects still use especially dative), but the gender and definiteness is still reflected. The modern grammatically correct equivalents to the Icelandic variants are "god dag" or "(den) gode dagen" (yes, double definite article when an adjective is there), but it is _very_ common to say "god dagen" instead, just like in Icelandic... Actually the correct definite form is never used as a greeting, only the first and last of the three.

The Icelandic accent/pronunciation is my favorite, and the language intrigues me. I'm a linguist and language teacher. I was first introduced to Icelandic pronunciation by listening to Björk's songs. I notice the pronunciation significantly when she sings "...army of me": the 'a' and 'me'.

Uppáhalds tungumálið mitt er norska. Norska er svo gaman að tala. Og íslenska er uppáhalds tungumálið mitt.

I want to learn Icelandic because I visited it last year, and I had never felt ANYTHING in my entire life before that. The nature is so pretty out there, unbelievable. I want to convince my teachers of the university that I can do my stage in Iceland, so that I can be there for at least a couple of months. If that does not works, I will travel there myself, for months. Never ever ever ever in my life have I seen so many pretty things, and the language is super pretty too.

Thank you so much! I have found two apps that teach words, (Drops, the two versions), but they do not teach the pronounciation of the letters alone. Thanks to you, Ása, I now understand why sometimes the person speaks it a certain way and sometimes another. I cannot express enough how thankful I am. By the way, even a course that has cost me over €100, does not explain the rules of pronounciation. I owe you so much!! Thank you for everything! I also love your accent, bit by bit I understand why you breathe so mucht when you pronounce. I have learned that trying to speak English whith Icelandic breaths, is way funnier, and also makes it easier to remember when to breate.

One thing I've noticed with translating the pronoun "Hán", it really should say "They is good at biking." The singular form of "are" would be "is". Of course that just sounds wrong in English. :D

I quit trying to learn Icelandic when I got to the cases but now that I found you I am going to push on through because you break things down so well and succinctly. Maybe someday I can read my favorite author Arnaldur Indridason in his native language….😌

I am just now seeing this episode as I just found your channel, and I am so glad I did. I have learned more from your lessons, which I watch over and over and over, than from all of the books and workbooks I bought in Iceland 10 years ago. You are a fantastic teacher with a terrific sense of humor. My question is why is the plural form of my bananas bananar and not bananir since it is male? Am I missing something? I was up all night thinking there is something I am not getting 😫
