Enjoyed as always.Take care b safe..
Thank you
Enjoyed Thank You.
I quite liked Barnaby
I love this book and I loved Sprout I cried a lot at the end of the book and I can't stop thinking about it
I loved it - one of the highlights of my year.
Está bien está bien está mejor😅😅
Exactly
Sounds lovely, not released in Norway until August but I will look out for it.
I thought it was such a lovely concept
Hi, will you be reviewing The Restaurant of Lost Recipes. For a comfort show I 'd highly recommend the Japanese show titled Midnight Diner.
It's on my list
I too, loved this book. At first I thought it was too clever by half as Nick Bradley references a lot of things. The film Mishima: A Life in 4 Parts is pointed out. The elderly woman who is left on a mountain to die as the family cannot support her, so they take her off to die is a trope. See the film The Ballad of Narayama (1958) and it was used in a recent Japanese film, with a trans-national marriage between a Japanese man and Philippine Woman. I know someone who lives on an Island in the Seto sea. Having visited Osaka and Kobe you can see the scenes. I like his other book, The City and The Cat with the interconnecting characters and different styles. You can walk the route of the Cat's journey in the book. Once you have read it, he was interviewed on SAOS TH-cam channel and answered questions from the chat. He commented on mine about Midnight Diner.
I have developed a real love for Japanese - Japanese inspired literature and I've failed - I still haven't picked up The City and the Cat
You're reading all the books that are piquing my interest and I love it. I can't wait to read Restaurant of Lost Recipes.
Neither can I
Fantastic book!! I would highly recommend this to historical fiction lovers. I just started my summer vacation and WOW what a way to start it. I am planning on purchasing this book for many of my relatives at Christmas. Highly recommend!!
This was one of my highlights
Fancy seeing you again. Randomly came across this book. I'll add it with my order of Full Moon Coffee Shop.
Hi again - I thought this was really good with it’s sprinkling of magical realism
@@millysbookshelf2101 sounds just what I need. Trying to write my own. Within universes but a new adventure each meeting
Good for you - good luck
Almost Ruth Galloway country
It is - I’ve read most of the series
@@millysbookshelf2101 yes I love them and am fearing the end when there are no more to read! I have Night Hawks with me on holiday and there are only 2 more!
I think I'm three behind
Added!
Hope you enjoy it
Nice! Where's this?
Sheringham in Norfolk

Can’t beat it
love this book, thanks for sharing😍
There are some lovely moments in there
I made a hexagon cardigan (only my 2nd cardigan.) I had to solve lots of problems when making it: add width in the back, make the sleeves taper, add length when I've no more yarn and the company stopped making that colour. I finished it and it looked good enough to wear, then you know what? It stretched like a yoga afficionado! I couldn't wear it, it was about 4 sizes too big. I hope someone at the charity shop got it and it was perfect, but 😤!
Poor you. This is the fourth garment that I have tried to make and I think I’m going to stick to blankets and cushions. The first two came out huge - can’t wear them to go out but they were good fot keeping warm last winter 😂
@millysbookshelf2101 I'm trying to make a mesh top right now. I'm hoping that it'll be nice because it's supposed to be loose and that it won't be heavy and stretch because it's mesh. I suspect I might not have chained enough for it to be as baggy as I want, but I'm going to fix that with a row of flowers in squares down each side seam.
Sounds really nice - what colour? My problem is that I haven't got the experience behind me to know how to adjust when things go wrong.
@millysbookshelf2101 It's pale pink. I don't have much experience making cardigans or jumpers, but I've made a lot of scarves and shawls which I usually give away because how many does one person need! So now I'm trying to do some tops. My advice is choose yarn you can frog, then you can try again if it's awful or gift it.
Good advice
Canary Wharf looks amazing now!
it's an incredible view from there
This sounds wonderful Milly, I've been a fan since The Forty Rules and The Bastard of Istanbul and love it in particular when Shafak digs into the ancient cultures and wisdoms of places we don't normally read much about. She brings so much to the English reading audience. Thank you for your enthusiastic review, I think I need a print copy of this one! Claire @Word By Word
I'm reading '10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World' at the moment. She is an author whose backlist I need to look out for
What about adding a button to close the two sides together? The two front pieces are just kinda hanging--a button at the top edges would give support and let it hang better.
I was thinking the same thing - but couldn’t decide how many I needed. Maybe just the one would work.
Oh I have just ordered that too , as I missed out the first time round and I loved the one about Cyprus.
Her new one which comes out very soon is gorgeous
A book I am listening to right now is Say Goodbye For Now by Cathrine Rybn Hyde which is a book I am enjoying it (what attracted me to the book was the wolf-dog on the cover haha 😄 ) I will add the book u just reviewed to my tbr sounds really good
A book I've never come across - I'll have to look it up
Is this story in the book setting in Ireland?
Yes, it's set in rural Ireland
That looks so cute and looks lovely on you 😊, nice work... I think u did a good job but I don't do crocheting but have been thinking of getting into crocheting myself to make things
Thank you - there are so many excellent tutorials on TH-cam which helped me when I started out. Bella Coco is one I go to regularly
The jacket is lovely. love those colors. The only problem I see ( if you are ok with unsolicited feedback ) is that the sleeves seem too short on the top side which makes it look odd. The inside (as in under the arm) is longer than the outside (top) of the arm . I don’t want to use the word puckering because it’s not; but as the edges of the sleeves don’t meet up in a line across the arm - where the front and back panels are joined - this makes an odd V effect which makes it seem like the sleeve is too tight under the arms. Is that fixable?
Do you know, I'm not sure how I would even start to fix it. The pattern for the sleeve was just three squares sewn together and attached. They aren't a good fit, I agree, I just need help to fix it - I haven't got the experience. There must be a craft club in my area - I'll have to look around.
Brooklyn has been on my TBR for …I don’t know how many years, and when I saw all the raves about Long Island, I decided I’ll to do the same, read Brooklyn before Long Island. But alas, when will I find the time. Thanks for another review.
That's why I like Audible - I can listen while I'm doing housework etc. Am listening to Long Island now
I loved Brooklyn and thought Long Island was even better until I got to the ending. I won’t say anything else about it, but it did leave me thinking Toibin had better have a third book planned lol
@@millysbookshelf2101 Yes,so I -listen to audible - but there is still not enough time😂
My thoughts exactly
I'm also down to working one day a week so that helps as well 🤣
Thanks Milly, looking forward to reading There are rivers in the sky.
I adored it
Thank you, will have to get this now
I hope you like it - talking cats are the way to go.
@@millysbookshelf2101 I agree, I often wish I could speak to my cat. May I ask how did you get a copy so early?
I've signed up to Netgalley and so can request digital arcs pre-publication
@@millysbookshelf2101 ah, thank you. I preordered the hardcover. I can't wait to start it.
Hope you enjoy it
I loved this one! I felt this was a very empowering tale because the lead character is happy living her life without the societal pressures that come with being a woman within that particular stage of life. She has found her own pride and purpose and meaning. I got the pink cover but I loved the different colours ❤
Exactly - she is happy and proud to be who she is
I received this book today. Im really looking forward to reading it :) ❤
I found Dolores' connection to Zoey interesting
@@millysbookshelf2101 ooh that's interesting I'll let you know my opinion when I finish it. I subscribed :) xx
Look forward to hearing someone else's ideas.
Love the "waffle" n look forward to reading some of Maggie O'Farrell books. Thanks for bringing this author to my attention.
Thank you - I've now read 7 of Maggie O'Farrell's and think I only have 2 or 3 to go. Love her writing - Hamnet and I Am, I Am, I Am are my particular favourites
I like your videos! I just read Elizabeth McKenzie's Portable Veblen,.,. and have on order the dog of the north arriving soon,.,., found you here by googling EM on you tube,.,. are you in En gland,.,.?
Thank you. I've still not read any more EM and yes, I'm in the UK.
I was the London judge for this year's Carnegie Medal and I mominated "The Song Walker". ❤
I thought this year’s shortlist was very strong but ‘The Song Walker’ had my heart
I also didn’t find the humour in it much. Some of the imagery in the book could be interpreted as so absurd it’s comical, but I read it as very isolating as our protagonist is trying so hard to hold onto a past life she remembers in fragments while also losing herself (physically and otherwise). I will say the way in which this book is written is very unique- Anne De Marcken breathed life into this in between world. It felt like I was floating through liminal spaces.
There were some surreal moments but I found it sad rather than comic.
Your voice is so soothing😊
Thank you
Hi Millie, just to say The Boy Lost in the Maze is not actually a verse novel, it's a novel told in poems, and the first ever in this genre to win the medal...Tia's book and Kwarme Alexander's book, The Door of No Return are both verse novels, so 'free verse', loose structure, whereas the poems in Joseph's novel are structured formally in accordance with traditional poetic structures and conventions. As a judge this year, I never knew the difference previously....as you say tho...two amazing books!
My apologies. The use of verse/poems encapsulates emotion so beautifully. I was thrilled that both books got the recognition they deserve.
@@millysbookshelf2101 no apology needed! I only learnt this after the book won! Verse novels are my favourite... As you say, they capture emotion and feelings in such a uniquely wonderful way!
I always look forward to this prize for the quality of writing - thoroughly enjoyed Manjeet Mann's novels - also verse - from a couple of years or so ago. Roll on next year.
I don’t read YA, but I for some reason do have Crossing the Line on my TBR. Thanks for reminding me about it.
I love verse novels and this one was excellent - it stands a good chance of winning.
I saw this book as a recommendation recently and got excited, because I also love MacBeth! What a bummer. I may still try it myself, because I’m not sure that I have the depth of knowledge that someone like you would have of the source material. We’ll see! Also, I told you a while back that I’d let you know when I finished reading The Blue Book of Nebo in Welsh, and I have! It was just as brilliant. There are some turns of phrase she’ll use in her writing that differ in Welsh vs. English that were really interesting. Beyond that, the book is shorter in Welsh because she didn’t have the aspect of the story that dealt with the characters’ relationship to the Welsh language and their identity. Sometimes the tone felt more heavy in Welsh, and I don’t quite know why or how, but it was fascinating. Anyway. Hopefully your next read will be better than this one! Ta!
As a story, yes, it's not bad but it was the Macbeth connection that I found hard to get my head around. Really interested to hear your thoughts about 'Blue Book' - thank you for keeping me in the loop.
It’s been interesting seeing the discussion around this novel, some call it anti-woke, while others call it anti-establishment or anti-populist. It seems everyone is convinced the book is on “their side.”
I know - we had great 'arguments' over the dining table when I was reading it.
Just finished Whale Fall. Thanks for your review. Helped me in my reflections about the book. I enjoyed it. Such an assured first novel. Liked the style/structure. Agree with your observations. It’s the embroideries which stood out for me. Won’t say anything else as don’t want to spoil things for anyone who has not read the book. Thanks again for the review.
I'd definitely pick up her next one.
So envious, how do you manage to read seven books in two weeks? Thanks for the reviews
I only work one day a week now so that helps 😀
Beautiful cover, beautiful end papers. Shame about the sticker on the front. Thanks for the review. I’m soooooo fed up of retellings though.
I know why do booksellers ruin a book with a sticker and I’m always terrified that if I try to take it off I’ll ruin it- I’ve read so many retellings -the Greek myths I can’t seem to get enough of
It depends on the narration as to whether I can absorb the audio like I can the written. In regards to “this” book, I read it in print and have the same feelings. I rated it middle line 3 out of 5). Though the writing, at times, was beautiful, most was just okay. I did not “love” the poetry. The many bird references in Nell’s chapters made me want to look up bird varieties, but yeah, this one was “ok”
I agree - some narrators just lift a book. Fiona Shaw reading the Richard Osman books was excellent. But this one - it wasn’t the narration, I just had no real feeling for the characters - Dolores more than the others perhaps. It was my Number 5
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
A worthy winner - a lot of emotion
Knew there was one coming - now I will defintely get it !
I adored it - a definite 5* for me
I’m pulling for Brotherless Night, but I would be happy with Enter Ghost, Soldier Sailor, or River East, River West winning.
I think it will be that one or Enter Ghost - but would love Soldier Sailor to win
Yes Milly! Thank you :)
Such a beautiful read
Great review! I love this author. I will definitely be reading this when it comes out.
One of the highlights of the year
Thank you for your thoughtful review - it’s much appreciated. Keep reading!
I found the use of verse so effective - it should be a book that is in every school
I also hope Soldier Sailor wins. I have two young boys (one still a toddler) so that book really got me. I don’t see it beating Enter Ghost though, which is fine. While it didn’t have the same emotional impact on me as Soldier Sailor, it was still a great read
I agree - it has my vote but think it will be Enter Ghost or Brotherless Night that takes the prize
I have the same opinions as you do about what will win and what I hope will win. I could never forget the visceral feeling I had while reading Sokdier Sailor
It made me remember my first weeks as a new mum all those years ago.
