    My mother was born in Palena and emigrated to the U.S. in 1922, along with her parents and brother. She visited twice before her death including in 1997 when we baptized my younger daughter in one of the local churches. It as a wonderful experience visiting and traveling about for 4-5 days but I think for my mother it was extra special sharing her home town with her children and grandchildren.

    Pro tips for driving in Italy… 1. Never put your phone down. And remember, texting while driving is a skill that needs to be practiced. 2. Drive as fast and reckless as possible. When you see pedestrians or bicyclists on the road, don’t slow down. Try to see how dangerously close you can get without hitting them. Especially at crosswalks. The same rule applies to driving near motorcyclists on the autostrada. 3. When entering a roadway or intersection, never look in the direction of the oncoming traffic. Only look in the direction that you want to drive. If there’s traffic, block the oncoming cars and wait until there is an opening in the lane you need. And of course, never use your indicators. 4. Ignore all speed limits and stop signs. When at a traffic light, honk your horn as soon as the light turns green. Don’t be shy, horns are made for honking. 5. Parking. Make sure that when double parking you block as much traffic as possible. 6. If the car or motorcyclist in front of you is not going as fast as you want, be sure to tailgate at least a half meter from their bumper. Don’t forget to dangerously pass whenever possible, even on blind corners.

      Hi sorry for the delay, I usually get emails when somebody comments but didn't for these. We liked Fara a lot but not sure we would do a long stay there. My wife has relatives there which is the main reason we stay there. The location is great but they don't have a lot of choices for morning coffee and/or restaurants compared to some of the other towns. They do have a couple nice grocery stores. That said, everything is within driving distance so maybe that's not so important. I don't think it has the public transport options like other towns do but that is based only on what we have heard, not from experience. I would definitely have your own transport available for day trips and such.

      Hi - sorry for the delayed reply, we were out of town for a while! That's funny you asked this, someone else did a little while ago too. It is a tough question and a lot depends on what kind of facilities you want nearby. A small town can be rustic and homey but not have a lot of the conveniences that you may want - grocery stores, restaurants, etc. Fortunately, there is usually another town within 15-20 minutes so maybe it wouldn't be as big a deal. Sulmona is a bigger town and pretty centrally located. It has a lot of the modern conveniences but can still retain the small Italian town charm in places. Or a town close to Sulmona could work out. We really liked Pescocostanzo and Palena too. Towns like Fara San Martino and Lettopalena are probably too small for what we would look for - they are nice but don't have a big choice in restaurants, bars, piazzas, etc. One channel I would really recommend is AHomeInItaly. He shows a lot of houses in Abruzzo and has a weekly live stream where he answers questions too. Good luck in your search, we are jealous!

      Hi - we’re glad you liked the video! The water was cold but people were still swimming (I only dipped my feet in.) I think the lido were officially closed (nobody was around and the offices were locked up) but there were still people at the beaches. The nice thing was that there was hardly anyone on the beaches. We have watched videos in Tropea from the summer and the beaches are packed. Much fewer people in May.

    This is a terrific video, thanks so much. A question. My husband and I are planning a trip to Abruzzo in the fall. Am I right in assuming that renting a car is pretty much essential or is there regular bus service between hillside town?. If having a car is essential, how challenging is the driving? Lots of traffic? Hairpins mountain turns?

    • @abuzzaboveitaly
      @abuzzaboveitaly ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi - so glad you liked the video! I would definitely recommend renting a car. There is some public transport but the schedules aren't super regular and finding a bus to go to where you want might be a challenge. (It would be a little easier if you spoke good Italian, but that won't change the schedules or anything) Driving is pretty easy for the most part and it is easy to find your way around. There isn't a lot of traffic or many big highways so you don't have to worry about being highbeamed by a Ferrari or anything. There are lots of signs and if you do miss a turn, worst case you go 5 minutes to an unintended town and turn around. The roads are well maintained and we haven't had any scary edge of cliff driving or really tight S curves on a hillside. Getting around in the small towns is probably more of a hassle because the roads can be narrow and have surprise one way directions. Have a great time on your trip! If you have any other questions just let me know.
