Hi! I'm RG Long and I'm a fantasy author who also likes football, working out, Pokemon games, and Warhammer.
I'm a mixed bag.
That's what this channel is for! Fantasy Nerds who love a good talk about LOTR but may not remember which color wizard showed up in the books but not the movies (hint, rhymes with, hue).

My group can get 2 games in a night instead of one so its much better for us.
I quit buying GW models years ago, because I was fed up with the constant rules changes that forced me to buy more and more models to be able to play my army. The advantage that all those small companies like OPR have is that they don't have to maximise profits to keep their shareholders happy, and they don't need that big overhead that comes with a company that sells physical models and has stores all over the world. I've played OPR Grim Dark and Fantasy Regiments a few times in my local gaming club, but people there are very reluctant to turn their backs to GW and their games, because of the very large player base for GW games. This year, I've found my new favourite game, Warmaster. Although it was originally released by GW, the rules have been maintained a a community project, Warmaster Revolution, and are available for free. Most models are available as STL files for very affordable prices around $60-80 for a whole army pack. And because of the 10mm scale you can print several 2000 points armies with one bottle of resin. 😁
No it's not, most people playing WH dont even know what OPR is and of the ones that do, only a small portion is actually playing them
Ruining no, getting more people into the hobby, yes.
My gaming group has been deep into 40k tabletop since 5th. Not a single person is still playing 10th.
Im Brazilian, dont have workshops near, só i play OPR with paper 2d minis, agains my wife and 2 kids. Very simples for teens and teach wife that dont play games, paper minis and Very Fun saturday night games. Just dont take the paper minis with "pizza" hands haha.
I played Mage Knight the tabletop miniatures game (not the board game) as a kid and the rules were very easy to comprehend. I’ve been looking for a game like it ever since. OPR seems to come close just looking at the rule set. I think if I add the MK elements I want (like formation rules, command rules and pushing) it’ll be the perfect game system
Mage Knight is still the GOAT
Theres a fine line between simple and elegant, and we know which side OPR falls on.
I only ask for 1 special faction rules and it'd be perfect
For reference to the print cost, if you don't have that capacity for a resign printer(their are concerns) with the exception of like three armies you can FDM print your miniatures. Something a cheaper as a old Kobra 2 for $100 can allow you to make your own 1000-2000 point army. so for a week of your time and $125 dollars you can have a starting army vs GW that wants $165 for start collecting box.
I think the better comparison is chess vs 3 level chess. Some people like to face an overwhelming amount of challenge up front. Some people always start a new console game on hard right off the bat. Both sides fill the nitch for model collecting. One side requires no effort just money to purchase models, while the other requires work and dedication to invest in making the models. This fact alone will stop the OPR numbers from getting huge.
GW just needs to do a Battle Tech and come out with 2 versions of the game. Version A: The shut the hell up and play version for the competitive crowd. All the stats are the same for certain classes of Infantry, Flyer, Tank etc. based upon classification (Heavy, Medium & Light version) regardless of faction - sub factions. Simplified - streamlined game, with all factions having the same choices for stratagems & faction / sub-faction traits. Version B: GW creates a rich & complex gaming system that'll be imperfect, requires some balancing & fans are fine with it because when you play whatever faction / sub-faction the rules captures the magic of the lore (at least to some degree). If I wanted to play One Page Rules, I wouldn't be playing Warhammer. I'd be playing One Page Rules with over priced GW miniatures.
Nah man, it's a mixture of GW's game/business decisions and the competitive player base being pandered to.
When I saw the armies, I knew how this would end. I play a similar Human Defense Force list.
I was very hyped for OPR, but after playing some games, its too basic. It misses all the neat command point shenanigans that makes a 40k army unique.
Warhammer/GamesWorkshop is ruining Warhammer. 🫣😉
If the game is so dry and complicated to the point where people would even imagine making one page rules, who’s fault is that??? Every new edition doesn’t need 98 new rules for every chapter and weapon..
Overwhelming victory and loss is never fun. As to the let your opponent have fun...they get the victory. Thats enough.
Tbh, OPR just fails on the face of it to deliver on why i am currently dissatisfied with Warhammer. It is exactly the simplicity - I like wargames where there are possibilities for wild and crazy events to occur and where it takes a full afternoon to play a game. I spend hundreds of hours painting, hell i spend 30 minutes setting up the gaming table, "wow, you can play a full game in 1 hour" is the polar opposite of what i want. And it really feels like every mini agnostic game goes that route. "Every unit just throws 10 D6!" "Every unit has the same stats!" "Dont even worry about it - we taught a sea cucumber to play our game, its so easy!" Give me the mini agnostic game with templates, and damage tables, and morale rules, and in depth unit customization at company scale or higher. It feels like thats every historical system and no sci fi system ever.
Did you really misspell your own channel name in the intro screen?!
No. Gw is the only one that could take themselves off. Also OPR minis in design are not cool enough for me
I didnt need opr to realize the absurd amount of clown rules in 40k
I hope it will ruin it. Power to choice and more bang for your buck. Bye GW.
I absolutely enjoy games where you can lose in turn on one. Two of my three best memories of games involve losing in the first round and winning in the first round I got into war gaming because I wanted to feel like I'm engaged in one of those legendary battles where generals won decisive victories by clever strategies. Pulling off something unexpected and crushing my opponent is fun (so long as they are ok and as it doesn't happen all the time), and getting crushed myself is probably even better, I right away want to figure out how to defeat the strategy that so soundly defeated me. I hate the idea that games have to be balanced encounters decided by the minutiae of tactical choices. That being said you don't want to be winning or losing massively every time. So after a decisive win - you could agree to play a different list next time - or you could agree to play exactly the same list and strategy so that your opponent knows what to expect and can plan against it - or you could swap lists - or if there is a clear skill difference you could coach them in some parts of the game is they'd like that - or again in the case of a clear skill difference you could take some kind of a handicap like fielding a lower points army
Play better. Stop crying!
Really good video. I do feel there is some copium here though. I feel like 3d printing for me would be like emulating video games. I downloaded all of the things i wanted and never play the roms. I do agree GW prices are outrageous but GW miniatures have never been cheap. I personally have a huge backlog of miniatures but i actively trie to work on the things that i want to play with. Trying to compare what you would buy from an online store to stl files seems a little one sided. I think a more accurate number would be what i actually want to buy from an online store not all the things i hoarded from 5 different stl sites. Im not sure i could actually find $1000 dollars worth of GW product that i would want in a year. I think the biggest obstacle for me with 3d printing would be finding the extra time to even learn to do it. To me is the biggest commodity i would be spending is time. Regardless great video.
I know this might be crazy but why hasn't anyone made an army list for a transformers themed faction? Big Robots = Neuron Activation.
OPR might not exist if Warhammer didn't milk their customers to death and make their rules so complex that casuals give up.
I prefer firefight from mantic, you got d8 and an absolut genial command system
Gamesworkshop ruin warhammer all by themselves no assistance needed
I’ve been building, painting, collecting and playing 40K since 2001 and I’m pretty active at multiple FLGS. I’ve yet to meet anyone in person that plays OPRs. I’ve heard a lot about it on the internet, and seen a lot of content creators hype it up on their channels, but I’m just not sure where there their player base is coming from. I know multiple people that play out of production games like Mordheim, Space Hulk and Battlefleet Gothic, but OPRs doesn’t seem to have caught on in my area. I’ve even looked for it and the two non-GW stores I frequent, don’t even sell it. It would seem the overwhelming majority of gamers prefer the genuine article.
A game where you lose in the first turn (or more correctly the deployment phase) is poorly designed and I just don't play it. The Age of Sigmar example is a comedy error - the big centre piece models are nice but they need support! Personally I'd let the player redeploy and start again, hopefully they learned their lesson. Saying that, any game based on I go you go is going to have that huge first turn advantage. I much prefer alternate/random activation.
I will say that the Shadow Stalkers started out as the Nightstalkers from Kings Of War, but recently got overhauled
I know there are a lotta "GW killed GW and Warhammer" comments so apologies if I broch some subjects that have been talked to death. I'll start by saying I love the creativity and work the artists and writers put into the models and the universe, it's what drew me in for the first time and it's had it's hooks in me ever since, I adore the stories of grim but noble heroes fighting against the odds, strange and alien terrors and beasts, and the sprinklings of absurd things that can happen in said universe. What I don't adore is GW heavy handed approach to their community, weather it be from things like their high pricing on things like codexes and models making the hobby less accessible to those on a budget or the the blatant disrespect they had towards animators and artists who put their souls into breath-taking animations and awe inspiring art that get people into the hobby just so they could try and create a monopoly over animation and get in on the "trend" of a subscription service. It reeks of people that only care for profit and very little else, to such a point that one of the first pieces I give to new Warhammer hobbyists I give is "for the love of god don't buy models direct." I want to be able to enjoy the hobby but frankly OPR gave a more accessible and more creatively open form for me to do that over GW which made the choice rather easy. If you enjoy playing GW's wargames and you have the means to do so then by all means go ahead, everyone has the choice to enjoy what they enjoy. I'm just some dude putting his mind out there as to why GW is seemingly on a downward trend.
Play official rips of gw models, 3d print stls look like trash
Lol, Games workshop brainstorming corporate is destroying Warhammer. Opr being still ruled by normal dudes is why more people are going to it
My country has the policy of "if l had to do it, you will do it too". In every aspect of life. Thankfuly we wlways were 3d print/recast central. But some stuff is not accepted. Fir exampke 3d recasts , exact copies are more accepted , then 3d "inspired" stuff.
I find it comical that the towering titans in Warhammer 40k are unable to simply walk around and shoot at whatever they want. Instead, they are forced into intense combat situations with Gretchen, who may not even pose a significant threat to them. It is absurd that these powerful beings are limited by rules and must suffer a -1 penalty when firing their weapons. In a world where war and violence reign supreme, it seems ridiculous that even the biggest and most formidable creatures are not immune to such restrictions. It highlights the absurdity of the Warhammer 40k universe and the extreme measures taken in warfare. Despite this, it adds an element of strategy and challenge to the game, forcing players to think creatively when faced with such limitations. Overall, while I understand the reasoning behind this rule, it still strikes me as ridiculous and further emphasizes the over-the-top nature of Warhammer 40k.
No, Warhammer is its own worst enemy.
OPR shows how broken 40k is. Gw ruins warhammer
Too bad 3d printers aren't free. But on a serious note it's nice of OPR to give rules for free unlike GW where you buy kits and then have to get rules for them separately
It was the same for proxy cards back when I played Magic. It is ok to proxy ? sure. Can you do it at a tourney ? No. Is it ok to proxy power so you can be a huge D*ck*ead at the casual table? No. As for the legality of it, that's between you and god.
This was shown to me in the dying days of September, how unfortunate that I could not get in on the deals
I’m interested in the Saurian Star Host
They’re a ton of fun! If you patreon for a month they’re half off!
My only gripe with the game is that the army rules basically just give a keyword to every unit in the army instead of having a unique ability in the game. Also, most armies have the same spells just given a different name. Other than these, the game is 100% better to play than 40k. Go from 3-hour game to 30 min to an hour game.
Absolutely! I think they may also be updating spells this season!
Over the years I have developed a strong interest in high fantasy, especially fueled by the Total War: Warhammer video games. I have now reached a point where I finally want to start investing in the hobby physically, but as someone on the ADHD spectrum I found Warhammer's complex rules to be too daunting for me to justify spending money on. After I heard about One Page Rules, though... Games Workshop is about to get a new customer for their minis that they wouldn't have gotten otherwise. I'll let that speak for itself. 🤷🏻♂️
Interesting!
we play both what's the big deal? one is a short game with less detail short story line. the other is a longer game with deep sweet detailed story line. simple!
Have fun and play! That’s what I want!
Should be 2 pages, 1 page recto verso
😅😅😅
I don't think GW cares what rules you use as long as you buy their models. What I think they'll struggle with or see as a missed opportunity are those they lose to 3d printing and other model ranges and OPR makes that easier or provides more choices for consumers. They hate that.
🥳🥳🥳
I just got into war gaming and decided to play One Page Rules. With expensive figures, very difficult rules, and not alternating unite activations. I couldn't get into Warhammer. The thing is, if Games Workshop tried to reduce the rule bloat, a lot of players would get mad.
I feel like you’re right there
Personally, I have always been a fierce and aggressive player when it comes to war games, especially when playing as the mighty orks. So, when my beloved Ghazghkull Thraka met his demise in the third round of our game, I was devastated. In fact, I was so convinced that I had lost and almost gave in to conceding. However, my opponent suggested that we finish the game and see where it goes. Despite suffering heavy losses and being pushed to the brink of defeat, I managed to turn things around and emerge victorious in the end. This victory came as a surprise to me, as I usually rely on all-out attacks with my other units in true ork fashion. It was only with the encouragement and motivation from my opponent that I was able to keep playing and eventually secure a win. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance and not giving up, even when things seem bleak. It also showed me the power of sportsmanship and how a positive attitude can make all the difference in a game. I am grateful to my opponent for helping me discover these lessons and for making our game an unforgettable experience. My opponent was playing Khone berserker, he's definitely a true War Master, Blood for the Blood God" 'Skulls for the Skull Throne' thanks Noah 💪
Good lessons all around!
