The VW that Volkswagen Didn't Design - Karmann Ghia | E2E E20
The 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia combines the timeless charm of classic Volkswagen engineering with the stylish flair of an Italian-designed sports coupe. Celebrated for its sleek curves and unique - though somewhat dated - design, the Ghia offers a unique blend of style and practicality that sets it apart from the typical sports cars of its time. How does this eye-catching classic fare alongside the diverse vehicles in the Haugland Collection, especially with only 60hp to get it moving? Join Alex and Amy Haugland as they showcase their "seventiestastic" Orange Karmann Ghia, taking it from a detailed studio review to the scenic timber roads of Oregon. Then they will assess its heritage, driveability, performance, and more to determine its place in the ever-growing Haugland Rank. Tune into this week’s episode of Everyday to Exotic to uncover the enduring allure of the 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia!

Keeps you on top of your maintenance 💁
Well what do you want?? Clean windscreen or air in your spare tyre?? Lol I guess if you got a foot pump it wouldn't be an issue.
I have a wind screen on my front door .But I also have a windshield on my car . And that one dumb idea from Germany ,deflate a tire to clean you windshield.
I’ve owned a late 1977 Stag…. To this day, it’s still the most beautiful car I’ve driven
Actually, most people don’t check the spare tire on a regular basis. They have no idea it’s flat until they need it. Now you have added a necessary check of the tire or at least an indicator as to the pressure drop…Genius
Fair point.
Things were different when that car was built , people were more proactive with there cars , and paid more attention to what it needed. To avoid breakdowns , today there's all kinds of sensors and electronics to do it for you
KG wasn't fast, wasn't strong, but was a BEAUTIFUL car.
…but how many wine cases fit in the back?
I had a 72 in college. It was dark red, with correct bumpers, but the big blobby turn signals were removed, and small rectangular ones were set into the groove the bumper. It looked factory, but better than the original. I do love the “plumber’s delight” bumpers that you installed. Far more elegant than the later ones.
Sensational. Used to watch the Merak and the Bora on the Kew Boulevard in Melbourne back in the day. Way ahead of their time. 🙏🏻
Congratulations on 20 very watchable productions. Your video and audio technology is easily deserving of many more viewers and subscribers, but I feel privileged to be one of the lucky ones who know about your collection and videos. I'm looking forward to seeing many more of your high quality vehicles and productions.
You do know that car is back from the 60s right
This car is a 72. But yeah, we know it’s old.
Yep side marker lights makes all cars post 68, chrome bumpers pre 73 or 4
50s, really. I had a 59.
I would love to see a new version of the Karma Ghia maybe a sports car with the same design it would be great. VW forgot about this beautiful car. They dont make cars that are so charming these days
At 41:33 is she knitting? Thats so "little old lady" of her... its kinda nice.
Amy is always knitting when she’s not discussing the car. 🤣🤣
like on my 412. you just fill the tire when you fill the fluid. and it will only let the tire go down so far in psi.
Cessna?
@blue123111 no. vw 412.
Type 4
Absolutely. It was not stupid. It was part of the normal upkeep of the car. The upside is you always knew the state of your spare tire. Compressed air was always available for free at the gas stations. Now that I think of it, the gas station attendents offered full service back then. While you waited for the tank to fill someone would wash your windshield and someone else would check and top up your fluids and check the pressure of your spare tire. Esso in Canada even had "never dirty cloths" that you could use to clean you car or wipe down the engine compartment and return it to the station and they would give you a clean one.
Hi Amy and Alex! i agree about the Color ( love the wheels!) looking forward to more episodes
Your videos are among the best I regularly view, nicely produced and informative. One characteristic unique to each car is the exhaust note and mechanical music created by the piston configuration, main bearings, pushrods, cams and the like. I would love to hear the start up and revs from the exhaust end and maybe the engine compartment if the engine has a unique sound. I’d imagine you have quite a few viewers who have never heard the unique sound of a VW flat four… as for likes and subscribes, I am at a loss as to why it took nearly 10 months for one of your vids to show up on my feed. Algorithms are a mystery… I respect your channel for not click bating with “barn find” “will it start” or “first wash in 50 years”. I also like the positive relationship you have with your cars and with each other, I seldom review videos until the end but I never duck out on yours.
Thank you! We definitely don’t ever want to mislead with our video titles or try to suck people in just to be disappointed. And as for the exhaust notes, we have been brainstorming on ways to showcase those sounds. We will definitely be looking into cool ways to highlight that. Thanks for watching and for all the kind words!
Beautiful 1972 karmanghia with wrong bumpers.
The bumpers were swapped to early model bumpers because - in our opinion - they match the aesthetics of the car much better. But to each their own!
Another great episode. I really appreciate finding about how the engineers made use of physics and air flow to make use of what was already happening to make the rest of the car work better or be more comfortable. Also, being a long time watcher, the first thing I thought when the "frunk" was first opened was "you ain't gonna fit any wine in there".
Thanks again! Yeah, the wine situation in the frunk isn’t great. But the secret back seat… may hide some wine surprises!
You can always mount a tach and get a bigger motor with dual carbs all things that can easily be reversed and put to stock I have her twin sister but 2 years younger and she's all stock I get more smiles per miles Great driving video😊
Also: North Hollywood Speedometer made an EXCELLENT conversion of my clock to a VDO tachometer. 🙂
I've had two '74s and still drive the latest one weekly after 18 years. Great video in nice detail! A couple corrections for the record. After '68, I believe, the type 1s and 14s had semi-trailing arms rather than swing axles on the rear, keeping the wheels parallel. It also runs an alternator rather than a generator in the later models. You have a super-nice resto here! I wish mine were as clean.
First Maserati I ever saw in real life. It was blue and parked on a street in the tiny town of Sinclair, Wyoming back in 1983.
the alumium side panels are not original......
Consistency !!! After 20th episode, i still like it
Once again thanks for the great episode. The Ghia is one of me fetish / bucket list cars definitely a coupe and ideally in that orange. The big question is how many cases of wine fit behind the front seats with the rear shelf open? ...lol. Keep the episodes coming love the format.
Great work! Please keep going. You two have such great taste in cars!
And you clearly have great taste in TH-cam channels! Thanks so much for watching us!
Amy. Stop calling it a frunk!! 🤦🏻♂️
Frunk = front trunk. It is an apt description!
@ Yes, started by the Tesla culture. The Bora is not a Model 3. My point.
@@twentiethcenturyboy6328🎉It pre-dates the Tesla, and has been used in the Porsche world for years!
@@ahaugland1 That’s a new one for me Alex. There are some differences of opinion on various enthusiast sites and Google as to the origins, but I’ll give you that out of respect for you as a fellow collector of vintage Italian classics. Your Bora is a fine example and it embodies everything from that era of Italian exotic motoring. Love the detail of your videos. 👍🏻
Thank you for the most joyful car collecting on TH-cam. Another fantastic season.
Thanks! We are so happy to be doing this! Glad you are enjoying it too!
Please keep making the videos. This was one of the best. Stunning color coordination. The KG's subtle, sensuous curves are refreshing compared to many of the clunges that have been foisted on us since. I think it will be even more beautiful in 50 years.
Amazing driving sequences.
Thank you so much! Oregon has such beautiful locations to go for a drive
great car and video. do you own all the cars you feature?
Thanks! Yes, all the cars we have featured so far are part of the Haugland Collection. In the future, we may feature cars that are not in the collection, but we will make that clear in the video.
My sister had a dark blue one. Not sure what year though. Had to be 1970-72.
Karman Ghia is not my end of the hobby, but I have always enjoyed seeing one. It's one of the greats in car styling.
That orange color is gorgeous! Such a great episode
1972, my mother had a light blue one.................
The light blue is sharp. Love a lot of the paint options they had on these!
@@Everyday2Exotic before that ....i still own a Picture of my Dad beside his Mini Cooper from ca. 1970 , the one with slide windows...........after that he drove A Romeo Gt Junior 1750 in red, passed over to his brother and...crashed...............and then 1978 a brand new Giulia in black as 1750 (?) too...... Mother drove a (1976) yellow Alfa Romeo Alfasud with wide body kit and 15 inch 205 Tires and Weber double carburetors------------but she set the Car on top................... REALLY exciting to see your CARS in mint EXTRAordinary condition, which is probably hard to find elsewhere !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep on goin´,All the best from Munich!!!!!!!!!! Viktor
i forget to mentioned.......Mothers new Lover (1976) drove an orange Alfa Montreal......i was stunned 10 years old at that Time...1 or 2 years later he came across in a NEW Corvette, which was something we knew from only Card Quartett...shocking !!! And to make it up...........my uncle who was owner of small Casino came across in a Rolls Royce 1975 or 6 Silver Cloud in Silver on Black........he won the car from a guy at at the gambling table.............Shocker .................me and my best friend Michael sitting in rear and greetings the passengers which goes by.........like a Landlord...............
Great review - I would love to see you review a genuine 100S and know your score on it
Maybe someday we will! Thanks so much for watching!
I watched this several times hi Amy and Alex. Great watch, thanks! I’ve watched this vid few times but didnt realize until today that Alex has an Ftype. I have 2016 Ftype S and enjoying driving it to workout, sport fields 4-5 nights a week. Before purchasing this very low mileage Ftype convertible, I wanted an Evora. But I didn’t see one listed for sale in AZ. There’s a Evora S listed for sale in AZ with even lower mileage and within price range. Can you tell me the ownership experience between these 2 cars? Ftype is a good looking car, but I think Evora is an exotic looking sport car. Should I replace the Ftype S with an Evora S? I’m guessing Evora is a better handling car but which one is more comfortable and easier to drive around at low speed. Evora s is 2013, Ftype is 2016. Both are under 10k miles. Evora is probably $10k-12k more. Can’t wait to hear from you! Thanks in advance
That is one of the best designs ever
Agreed
How Maserati copy names of some cars: Maserati bora Volkswagen bora, Maserati corsa chevrolet corsa
Whole ly moly
The nicest car we ever owned. Amy showed this time the smartest member of the wunderful Haugland Duo. 😇
That's so incredible!
The knitting is absurd.
Absurdly good, right? Master knitter right there
To be honest it is what Amy is usually doing any time she is a passenger in a car!
Or, to be honest, when I'm sitting anywhere else. If I sits, I knits!
I remember it. My favorite 70's super car.
You have excellent taste in cars. Thanks for watching!
The compartment next to the driver was meant to be briefcase storage. Also, this was the most expensive car offered for sale worldwide in 1971
It could definitely store a full-size briefcase and then some!
I have watched your wonderful tribute to a truly wonderful car from start to finish, because of your fabulous production value....yet again. I love the passion and effort you put into your videos as I watch them. By this time next year you'll have well over 1 million subscribers 😊. Thank you again 😊
Thank you again!
She can barely push the horn 😂😂 good thing she isn't driving it
Amy drives the Maserati in the full episode, and, spoiler - she floors it. Because she's awesome
the driver headrest need a bit love ? :D it looks bend or the material inside is weak? , but it´s a dream car
The interior of this car is original to the car and hasn't been restored at all. It's quite possible the filling of the headrests is breaking down somewhat, as the foam often used in auto upholstery has a tendency to disintegrate into orange powder over time. That said, they're still fairly solid and both the left and right headrests sit at the same angle and are the same shape so I doubt they are too far from their original condition.
As a minor correction, the sun visors have been replaced as they had definitely turned into the aforementioned bags of orange powder.
tv quality on youtube, love to see it. please keep uploading!
Thanks! We plan on it!
