    In the early 90s my friend bought his wife a 2cv for a Christmas present wrapped up in a big red bow she wasn't happy it was hilarious but saying that once she mastered the gears she slowly fell in love with it and ran it for about 4/5 years it was always reliable I think 👍🏽

    I used to sell them new in the UK. Even at the end you couldn't get enough of them. Things you got wrong are the heater flow is the other way round, if the heater is not on, it blows the hot air into the wheel arches, and official top speed is 71 although they will do 75 if conditions are right, the din is incredible. 1st car to have radial tyres in 1948, that idea caught on. They still operate from Finland in the North to Chile in the South and are approved for crossing the Sahara desert. Things you missed, you can hand crank it if the battery is flat, the standard toolkit is enough to nearly take it apart.It was never sold in the US because of your obsession with power, have more brandy and learn to relax, take it slower and have a laugh what is a couple of minutes if you are having fun and believe me you won't arrive much later than anyone else driving anything. Gearshift, it is there because you could get a bench front seat until fairly late on and the floor is flat, the reason you have difficulty with it is trying too hard, it is spring loaded towards the centre so 1st to second just gently push forward, you have to twist it a bit to get into first and top. It takes most people about 2 hours to get used to it. The last ones in Europe were made in Mangualde in Portugal and there is a video of the production process on youtube, it is hilarious. Thanks for video.

      My very first car in the late 70s was a bright yellow Renault R4 which I loved. I also drove a 2CV6, Ami 8 and Dyane a lot. The 2CV is one of my 2 favourite cars (the other being a Lamborghini Miura). I do feel that the reviewers missed the whole point of the car and did not appreciate how incredibly good the ride is.

      Thanks for the reply and the clarification about the heater system. The top speed of 72 I mentioned was purely calculated based on what the speedometer went up to, with 120 kph being approximately equivalent of 72 mph at the ratio of 6 MPH per 10 KPH, which isn't entirely accurate but is generally the rule of thumb I use when driving a car with a KPH speedometer in the United Stated. I hadn't realised the 2CV was the first car with radial tires though I knew that Citroen (with its Michelin ownership) was where they premiered, though I had it in my head that it was on the Traction Avant, though the Traction Avant, predating the invention of the radial tire, wasn't initially released with them. There are definitely things we missed and some things that were left out because of the run time and I don't have the complete toolkit for this car. We did hand crank our MG TC in a previous video and we have quite a few cars that have the capability such as the 1949 Bentley we did a video of as well. The gear shift does take quite a bit of getting used to, though generally I haven't had much issue with it. Amy on the other hand still struggles somewhat, though she had only driven the car for about a half hour at most before we filmed the episode. I'll have to track down the production video you mentioned! It could certainly be worth watching! Thanks again for the comments!

    We bought our first house in 1985 , and because of this we were skint and bought a 2 year old 2CV.
    We bought bigger and bigger houses and kept the 2cv.
    A good friend said " how can you afford a house like this " I replied "because I don't keep going back to the Ford dealer every three years for a new car what you are spending on car loans we are spending on mortgage.
    We kept it 10 years , in the end sadly the chassis rotted through , but what a brilliant car .

      Love this. That’s exactly what it was intended for. Being a budget car that didn’t require a lot of repairs. And any repairs it did require were usually cheap.

    • @chrisadams6595
      @chrisadams6595 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes and I could do the repairs myself , fit new exhaust sections , grease the suspension components, remove the 4 wings ( fenders ) and de rust them then spray them with anti rust compound before refitting them etc.
      The only thing I couldn't do myself were the king pins.
      And I dreaded the annual test because some really strict testers would say " play in the kingpins , need new ones"
      Others would say "bit of play there but that's ok it's supposed to be like that , just depended on who did the test.

      The other thing which I don't think you will find out because you both look like careful drivers and your car is mint, is just how fast a really loosened up 2cv will go , going downhill the speedo needle would go past the fuel gauge and back to zero , which I reckon must have been an honest 80 mph what great memories 😂

      @chrisadams6595 how much vibrating and rattling was involved in that? Haha

    • @chrisadams6595
      @chrisadams6595 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes a lot of noise , but the car was designed to run flat out , and ofcourse you got used to driving with your foot on the boards , which when you got into faster and more expensive machinery made for very rapid driving.
      Now at the age of 66 I'm making a conscious effort to slow down😂

    Good to see that you bought a very nice example of the 2CV. Kudos to the previous owner. The gearchange does need getting used to but should be sweet and light. A small adjustment should enable you to clear the clutch completely and make the change how it should be. Do a small pause in neutral as you do the change to help the synchromesh the same as a lot of old cars. Town car? If you watch any of the 2CV "Raids" across mountains and deserts you might change your mind. Many have gone round the World and I'd be happy to pick one to do that. If you had a "Comfort" category I thing you both would have had to score it high. An engine conversion to 650cc is worthwhile. They thrive on revs and are happy to sit all day with your foot on the floor. 65 cruise is easy but yes a set of Bluetooth headphones would be useful if they are legal to wear when driving, where you live.
    Do my OCD a favour and realign the rear bumper, please.

    • @ahaugland1
      @ahaugland1 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! The gear change does work relatively well and for the most part, the car shifts without any issues. the harder part is getting used to the very different way the gear shift operates. Conceptually, it is much like a floor mounted shift but with rotating the shaft and the very long throw forward and back, it isn't quite as natural as shifting a more traditionally configured manual car. This really was one of the first times that Amy had driven the car. To be honest, we did rebuild this engine with the 650cc setup very shortly before this video was filmed, as the original engine was somewhat tired and leaked quite badly out of the crankcase. as the engine was coming out to fix the leaks, and given how inexpensive the conversion was, we did it at the same time. As far as comfort, it certainly does rank quite highly. For our classification, that fits in signiifcantly in the drivability category, as the goal would be how easily I can use the car to drive it every day, in modern traffic where we live. That said, I recently had the opportunity to drive a Citroen Mehari on the coast in Portugal, where the car, based on the same mechanicals, excels for the types of roads an traffic in the area I was in. unfortunately, the moment you leave the city streets around us, you are often in hills where speed limits are 55 miles per hour or higher on the highways. Though it is possible for the 2CV to reach those speeds, it takes a lot of work and certiainly isn't anywhere near as pleasant to be driving as it is in the city at more comfortable speeds. Unfortunately it is also illegal to wear any kind of headphones while driving here!

    This car really appeals to my love of the unusual. That said, the suspension advantages, the spartan (and potentially easy to repair) design, the ability to remove the back seat and take your whole life with you, and the distinctive look makes me think it'd be a great car for the protagonist of a post-apocalyptic adventure/comedy.

    It was the French alternative to the VW Type 1 as you said, so no bells and whistles. The thing with the grill was actually pretty common on older cars, because of inadequate heating. Some had it from the factory while others you had to make it it on your own.

    • @ahaugland1
      @ahaugland1 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have seen other cars that use a similar setup for helping keep the car from cooling too much and raising the heater's effectiveness in the winter, and even have a similar setup on a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE, which has a built in manually controllable blind in front of the radiator, similar to a window shade the driver can raise or lower from inside the car to improve heating. Given the high performance nature of the car, the cooling system is oversized, so in the winter it takes a very long time to get up to temperature without raising the blind.

  • @dutchcitroen2cv

    Very nice 2cv , but it is absolutely a 1982 or younger model. The black and yellow Charleston is only produced in 1982 . But this could be a Charleston clone. Every 2cv before 1982 had drumbrakes and dot4 brake fluid. After 82 the 2cv did get diskbrakes that operated on the green LHM brake fluid. And there are many more details that shows this is a 80's model 2cv.
    To be allowed in lets say America the 2cv's had to be a certain age and that resulted in messing with the chassis numbers. In Europe there were loads of them and plenty of older 70's 2cv that came to there end of there lives. Those numbers often ended up in younger 2cv's so that they could be imported overseas . A little bit of the ugly truth.
    But just enjoy the car. I owned so many (and still ownes a few) that i lost Count. It is a very nice car to just enjoy.
    Thanks for showing youre nice video. If you are interested please look at some of my 2cv videos.
    Greetings from Holland.

    Nice looking car! If you roll the top with the vinyl on the outside you won't get bug splats on the fabric side. Disc brakes make this a 1981 or later.

    • @ahaugland1
      @ahaugland1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good to know! That said, the top on this car is entirely fabric rather than fabric backed vinyl. That said it would still make sense to roll it the other way. The exact production date of this car is difficult to nail down. The title lists it as a 1976 and the chassis number seems to correspond, but a lot of the details are that of a later car. Since the disc brakes are inboard and mounted to the engine, I suspect it is possible that the engine may have been swapped with one form a later car or retrofitted at some point in the past.

    • @ahaugland1
      @ahaugland1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would certainly agree that it was an innovative car when it premieres and filled a very significant need in the automotive world at the time. By the time this car was produced, however, the automotive world has shifted quite a bit while the car remained in production into the 1980s. By that point in time, the main advantage of the 2CV was it's low price and very low cost of running. I would definitely be interested in any points you feel we missed or got absolutely wrong. We are certainly not infallible and although I have studied quite a bit of automotive history, it is difficult for me to gather and retain all facts on any of our large collection of cars.

    • @ahaugland1
      @ahaugland1 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Definitely! With modifications, we generally try to stay with what isn't necessarily obvious, but several have had disc brakes replacing drums, upgraded engines (generally in the same family so not obvious unless you really know what you are looking at, a couple have retrofitted power steering both electrical and hydraulic, several 5 speed gearboxes or retrofitted overdrives, and we have a small number that have significant engine swaps. In general, however, we usually try to stay close to stock.

    You really do not understand the name: it is 2 Chevaux Vapeur which literally means 2 steam horses this translates to the power produced by a comparable steam engine ( the then only way of describing power of machines and yes used for roadtax purposes)

    • @ahaugland1
      @ahaugland1 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do understand the general concept of where the name came from and how it was used for classification and taxation of vehicles, which was similar in France to how it was done in the UK before World War 2. Both used a methodology of calculating an equivalency of output based on engine displacement rather than any measured actual power, hence the Austin Seven, in the UK was 7 taxable horsepower (as opposed to horsepower as a measurement of the specific engine's performance), and the Citroen Traction Avant started as a 7cv, increased to 9cv, etc. That said, I do appreciate the detail of the equivalency being based on a steam engine.
