I rant about media, primarily video games. Come, let's discover how many games have references to the Kabbalah together.

Limbus Company Book Tour - Cantos IV and V
"Limbus Company", there you go you mathematical daemons, promote my video. We're going back to talking about some books while a motley crew of 12 bastard children bumble their way through a hypercapitalist dystopia. And happy holidays to you all, since the research and writing took way longer than anticipated.

Silent Hill 2 is way scarier as an adult
With my cursory knowledge and glancing at wikis, Im unsure how your theory of the Inferno following Dantes descent can work in the future Cantos. Canto 6 Would be Heracy which i dont really see. Canto 7 is probably the 1st part of Violence, Violence against neighbors, Canto 8 (Hong Lu) Is Violence against the self (5 gloom base ego looking real scary right about now) And canto 9 (Ryoshu) would be Violence against God, ART, Nature (Oh this one could hurt too). The real odd part is that the next 2 circles Fraud and Treachery but we have 4 sinners left with Meursault, Outis and Faust and ofc Dante. I am unsure how they can correlate to the remaining cantos but i do believe that when we reach the Center of hell we will probably either have the confrontation with NCorp in full effect/its conclusion or we can meet carmen.
The main thing that is giving me pause is that the concept of Heresy fits Don more (filial impiety), but the aesthetics as presented in Limbus fit elements of Heath's Canto (people in fiery tombs, heresy understood as denial of the immortality of the soul) So I'm just waiting to see if Hong Lu has a forest in it to lock in my theory for good. As for the four remaining sinners, Fraud has A LOT of sub-circles. Either that or each head of Lucifer in Treachery is gonna get an expanded story in a way. We'll see.
I wasn't going to smash that like button but then you used the ultraliberal line and I had to give you my real

The Klaasje bit is so on point man, thanks for saying that, I was getting super annoyed at the discourse about her. She reads to me like a thoroughly Machiavellian person, but there are so many hints that there is a conscience somewhere in there that it's a bit hard to believe she's a psycho. Making the call, the cigarette burning her fingers when she talks about the death, staying around after the body is gone and so on. And then on the other hand, you can see the ease with which she'll throw Ruby under the bus for her benefit, or fuck over the hardy boyes. And then there's the whole making someone k*ll themselves bit. It does kind of seem like that one is genuinely eating away at her. Partly because she doesn't ever really (unless I forgot/don't know) try to unravel Harry. Even when cornered, it's pleading and an appeal to revolution/liberty/nationalism. There is no way that she isn't aware of the other option. That she could easily "become" Dolores Dei and have essentially full control over the clearly suicidal, clearly heartbroken, older, single & lonely jackass who obliterated any and all sense of self. Yeah, Kim complicates things for her in this regard, but she doesn't even set it up as a last resort. But then again, maybe it's just a lapse in judgement, or being caught off guard by Harry seeing through the "friendly with a vague sense of maybe" act in the first place. Fuck I love her character. Such a refreshing take on the archetype. The fact that she was forced to set up the web of lies. The fact that she risked unraveling it because of (likely) genuine emotional distress. That she isn't evil for fun, at least as far as I can tell. A beautiful shade of dark gray.
This is one of the best essays on the game, the ocean is saltier because of it. 3rd time watching it
I haven't read much on the Korean origin of Sunshower, so that's neat to know. My interpretation has been very Little Prince focused, because goodness knows Limbus is very Little Prince coded (looking at you Demian). In that sense, the fox could also be a reference to the book's fox, which is skittish towards the Prince because he hasn't been tamed, aka befriended. The way the Prince befriends him is by sitting with the fox, nearer an nearer every day, something you mirror in the Abnormality's event to receive its gift. The fox talks to the Prince about how humans have stopped genuinely making connections, opting for quick and easy solutions instead.
The fucking chicken!!!!
1:14 About that, though... aren't peccatulae the product of a failed distortion anyway? In which case, would becoming an embodiment of sin like a peccatulum mean at least an attempted distortion, or am I jumping the gun there? Plus Dongrang's distortion also has resemblance to gluttony peccatulum features. I don't think "written verbal acknowledgement of a conversation with carmen" is required for something to be a distortion or not, though. Like our guy Roland just kinda abruptly distorted, like... twice consecutively or something. (I'm not even sure we ever see the sort happen in Distortion Detective). Dongbaek talks to Carmen, but there's no such noted speech with Ahab's EGO manifestation. I feeeel like its pretty safe to say Kromer distorted, but maybe thats just me feeling like "nah golden bough funsies" is a cop-out
Addendum: Distortion Detective explains that there's a reason distortions look as they do, and certain features often correspond to the source of that distortion. I.e. water with depression, electricity with neurosis, for some given examples. So Kromer bearing extreme resemblance to the peccatulae embodying the sin of lust would be no coincidence, considering they're brought into being in a similar way. That's what's fueling her distortion, or at least the major contributor.
It's an insignificant difference, but I do want to cover the fact that the process is different, in case this becomes a factor later down the line. As it is, it's a middle point on the spectrum between peccatulae and a Distortion.
Being Polish and having this analysis in the background while working and suddenly hearing the words "Poland as a Christ of nation" was like getting shot in the head 🤣 Amazing work, though.
43:23 [Canto 3] Don: Pretends she didn't hear it [Canto 7 spoiler] . . . . . . . [Canto 7] Sinclair agrees.
Дякую за таке грандіозне відео!Продовжуйте в тому ж дусі!Та привіт із України!Хай лунає диско!
Always thought the level of the inferno presented in canto 5 is greed, in the form of the obsession toward a single thing rather the hoarding aspect. In Inferno, the greedy clash against each other endlessly, and while the bashing continues they start to fuse and be one mass against the other. Vergilius in Inferno even remarks to dante that they become one and the same, the same thing Ahab in Limbus says to Ishmael. The same "becoming one thing" is seen in the mermaids to, no matter what one was, the palidification is the same and everyone, pirate or lccb agent, will become a palid mermaid, one and the same.
Maybe. The notion of a wheel of fortune and sides changing their 'wealth' constantly is present there. But still, call it a gut instinct. Honestly, at this point I'm waiting for the Hong Lu chapter to see if it fits Violence Against Self in any way, cause if it does then it means I locked it in.
MAPPA!!! MAKE A FIRE PUNCH ADAPTATION AND MY LIFE IS YOURS!!!
1:13:25 so which sinner is going to betray us then… Outis? Outis probably.
Outis is such an obvious candidate, that I feel like she's a red herring. Which in turn makes her the perfect candidate to play it straight and still be surprising.
Either Outis or Faust if going by "Dante is White Night" analogy, in my books
Amazing essay once again, thank you very much for doing these. On an additional note or question. Would it add to the available information to consider, the uptie and dialog from characters that take over important roles in the canto? I feel that Pequod Yi Sang was a better Starbuck, closer to the book, than the one we got in the main timeline. The Identities of each sinner also carry some elements that tend to be constants for each, certain goals, mindsets, roles. And even the EGO, that each sinner get, feel like they tend to speak a lot about what guides their path, what they believe in, and what they can overcome to become the better version of themselves. Like Identities, EGO extracted should be a possilbity that the sinner reached in some other timeline. Meaning, they overcame that emotion/belief/craving/etc. and sometimes, we didn't even knew they had it. EGO, despite not having a story or cutscene linked to it, i feel can also light a lot into a sinner's mind.
The uptie stories are often a really interesting insight into both Sinners and side characters, but I don't want to rely on them to not find myself in a position where I need to consider spending cash to get access to them to make sure everything was 100% checked out

1:16:14 Tens of people sounds small. Dozens of people sounds large. I don’t understand, but it is true.
38:13 if we only take the "fox's wedding" story into account for Sunshower, Yi Sang having a beloved seems fitting since the only other playable sinners with Sunshower are Heathcliff (albeit as an ID based on Dongbaek) and Outis, who also have their own beloved (Catherine and Penelope respectively). As for the "false kindness" aspect, it certainly fits how Heathcliff sees his life before joining Limbus Company. It could be just a coincidence, or they pulled some galaxy brain moves while assigning IDs and EGOs to the Sinners. Either way, I adore Sunshower and one day I'll get to find out if Outis also checks both boxes like Heathcliff or not.
1:19:21 I interpreted Hermann's offer more as that by helping with Hermann's plot to destroy all other mirror worlds, Ahab will get to destroy all the pallid whales in those worlds. If the whale's world is destroyed, with the whale in it... that probably fits the definition of hunting and killing it closely enough to make Hermann's offer not complete gaslighting. Though the idea of Hermann out-gaslightlighting Ahab, the Gaslighting Champion, is extremely funny. Excellent video, especially loved the Nietzsche/EGO-Distortion analysis
What the actual fuck those some random koreans are cooking
I remember, in the hells chicken, rodion says "kozyol"(козёл) out of nothing, or maybe not? I just forgot the dialogue. Kozyol means goat
Gregor drops some German at a point too, so does Meursault with French. They're having fun with it.
@@LastMinuteEssaysryoshu has japanese(?) words in her art, and faust has gesselchaft/walpurgisnacht, outis has greek words, the introduction parts seems to ahoe diff languages for each sinner, which could suggest the language for the districts they live in?
Sorry for being the one annoying italian again but yeah intervallo was a good word choice since it’s usually the break between acts in theather or at the cinema compared to a normal break between games just being a pause. Though I assumed they meant it as intermezzo which is when actors do improv or a rehearsed small skit to entertain anyone who didn’t need a break while they do their scenery/costume changes. Which is still just an intervallo so not wrong but that one is just more generic I guess it sounded better.
Hey, learning new stuff is never gonna be received wrong here, nw
2:19 "Aspect" is an astrology concept meaning the angle between heavenly bodies. We can be certain that this is the intended meaning by referencing JP translation.
This video is amazing! I was so excited for it, I think the final result payed out really well as someone who also adores Canto IV and all the historical-literary references throughout and God the theories about "existence comes before essence" and that these stories might have been repeating (which I kind of wonder why we have the La Manchaland IDs even though it was all 200 years ago before our Rodion, Gregor and Outis could concievably be born for example?) is so interesting, same for the Ubermensch analysis of EGO awakening....though also some other interesting thing I noticed: -The whole Canto IV dungeon is full of references to real Yi Sang's poems to the point it'd get insane to explain them all, but I'd like to point out how the first floor of the dungeon's layout is based on the diagram in Crow's Eye View no. 5 talking about "GREAT WINGS THAT CANNOT FLY, GREAT EYES THAT CANNOT SEE" which feels like a very direct nod to Yi Sang's state and journey going through it. Specially the mention of eyes taking in count we have things like Yi Sang "closing his eyes" at the world due to his emotional distress and "becoming blind" from the pills given to him at N Corp so that he couldn't notice the door to leave, and then we have Dongbaek losing her eye and being trapped in her warped worldview which was never made aware of the broader picture and could only look at what went wrong and what was lost due to trauma (literally only having one eye to see), which makes it interesting her aparition in the Farmwatch fight has both of her eyes again and seems much more calm and happier. On the other hand there's something more simple and subtle like Dongrang's glasses during The League times being round and changing them to squared one at K Corp, metaphorically and literally changing the frame of reference through which he sees the world, and of course the Tearful Thing itself being a giant eye. -Gubo talking to Yi Sang but not stopping him is kind of...interesting to me, because the dialogue still comes off as condescending and Yi Sang says Gubo's words back then hurt him deeply, that they felt like not trying to stop him but instead trying to taunt him, and Gubo closes that dialogue with "enjoy your rest then, I'll return when twilight arrives" which I feel is not discussed enough because of how...ominous it comes off as, like he knows that because of something that will happen in the future Yi Sang will unavoidably end up back with N Corp and the white room and treats letting Yi Sang go as more of a vacation for Yi Sang of some sorts, I'm kind of surprised how glossed the details of this conversation are. -Yi Sang's whole potato gag in Hell's Chicken is probs a reference to The Camellias too taking in count the story starts with the narrator refusing potatoes from Jumsoon and in this iteration instead Yi Sang doesn't want to let go of the potato no matter what probably referencing his grief over the League, even more since the potato is "burnt" just like how the place went in flames and Dongbaek ended up being disfigured forever in those flames. His Spicebush ID even talks about potatoes and chickens fighting in his idle lines. It's actually a bit crazy how The Camellias feels arguably on the same level of importance as The Wings even though the Limbus story doesn't have any direct coorelations with the events in The Camellias, with the Spicebush outside the League's lab window next to Yi Sang's desk and him looking into them through the mirror in the ED as well as the combined motifs of birds and flowers in Yi Sang's narrations and the old stage descriptions before the Canto VI update (I kind of wonder if that's why the original Season 2 trailer put such an emphasis on Dongbaek? We see these obscured flashes of her and Yi Sang when she stabs him in part 1 at the very end, and the TGS trailer for Canto V uses the image of her happy in the dungeon to represent IV) And also the the theory of EGO functioning like the Ubermensch somehow blows my mind even though it actually makes so much sense, it's like putting into definition something that felt kind of understood but never quite could put into words. But also I love the mention of book Ishmael's openmindedness because when we see her in Limbus she's kind of...the opposite. She rejects beliefs and ideas that aren't her own and shuts the others out for being "strange" despite her previous bond with Queequeg. It really feels like a sad show of how much what happened with Ahab affected her
Oh, I love these points, that adds so much to my appreciation. As for Gubo's 'farewell' speech, maybe I could've dug into it, you're right. But once twillight comes, I'll have the time to comb through the game again and piece the foreshadowing together, we'll see
@@LastMinuteEssays Yeah that one really intrigued me and makes me wonder if it has to do with the clock on Dante since it's getting close to Midnight, maybe we'll see him in one of the future Cantos (possibly the next one since it'd be a bit absurd if Jia Huan is not involved also possibly giving us insight into Hermann's group not to mention Honglumeng's themes of the pain caused by filial piety specially to a family that does not accept you or tries to mold you into something you are not with Gregor and Hermann's messed up relationship) More of an unrelated note but I think it's also curious about Sunshower how going by Heathcliff's dialogue in his Sunshower IDs he feels like the fox became like this because it was abandoned by a precious friend which left it heartbroken and unable to trust anyone and that's why he relates to it, definitely projecting his feelings towards Catherine here but also likely linking back to Dongbaek similarly feeling abandoned by the people she trusted (and probably Yi Sang the most, going by her dialogue when she stabs him), and that probably extends to the playable Sunshower EGO for Yi Sang and Outis specially taking in count Odysseus is betrayed a lot by his own men in The Odyssey and of course yearning to go back to his wife with the motif of the Fox Rain myth
Thank you so much for summarizing the plot in less than one minute I hate being 20 minutes into a video and it dawns on me that I'm being told a chronological order of events peppered with sponsor segments
4:00 Eungbong is common name for "mountains" but as womans name... it's bit old-fashioned Like Agatha or Clara And named a shop after owner is old-fashioned too so, The name ' Eungbong 's chicken' is old-fashion times 2 4:48 This is old gag of korean From 1999's song 어머님께(for mother) The lyrics of this song is about realizing sacrifices of mother made for us when we were yong. Most Koreans know this because it's a song by G.O.D, The first top-tier idol(male) of Korea. And of course, many comedies have been made by twist its lyrics. Like This "When I said you can have whole meal because l hate that food, It's wsa literall son. lol" 19:45 Dongback Usually means RED CAMELLIA. But Dongback's E.G.O. is yellow flower because in 영남방언(south accent, authors native) Dongback means yellow spicebush But many people didn't know this and misunderstanding that story. Just like character DongBack hidden her true purpose And last, The pronounce 구인회 (league of nine) is more like Gu-In-hae Understandable mistakes, korean 회 in IPA is hoe
it's interesting that red camellias appear only as Dongbaek dies and says her final words, with the third note
Thank you so much for the clarifications!
While I know Stiltcurrent already covers this, I think that Skin Prophet could be a representation of Ahab's singlemindedness and obsession. An entity that spends all its time writing an indecipherable prophecy that only it seems to understand, attacking blindly and only noticing the sinners properly once the candles are lit. In fact, Skin Prophet has an attack that makes it take damage in exchange for snuffing out the candles once more, making it go back to its reading and writing of the prophecy, harming itself just so that it can continue with its obsession. Not to mention that the Skin Prophet inflicts a status effect that makes it so it and the candles target one specific sinner with certain skills. Idk, a lot of this stuff makes me think of Ahab and specially of that scene where Ishmael opens the door to Ahab's room just to find her with her eyes wide open, a lamp illuminating the whole place and many crude drawings (probably done by Ahab herself lol) of the Whale nailed to the walls of the room
50:15 I do not necessarily believe this was a skip. Limbus' use of the classical Gloom in place of Greed here actually fits this Canto just as well as Wrath does, and Gloom was also critical to Yi Sang's Canto. I would argue that the Great Lake, and Canto 5 in general, is a liminal space between these states: Heathcliff's Canto will be more reflective of Wrath in many ways, whereas this Canto is all about that SINKING bay-bee. It's a sinking driven by the wrath and greed of Ahab and Ishmael, absolutely. But I feel like it's worth drawing attention to this being a deliberate layer-swap rather than a circle-skip.
On the level of the sins themselves yes, Gloom fits the bottom of the Styx well, plus it's not like Limbus is a story so simple that it only focuses on one emotion at a time, I get that. But as far as the structure of the poem goes, hm, I still feel like it was the right call to liken the Lake to river Styx. Heathcliff may be wrathful, but I don't think the aesthetics of his Canto fit that at all. But as I said, we'll see. My brain is fried at the moment.
37:37 One of the key missing things is just the literal name of the Abnormality: So That No One Will Cry. It's a creature that wants to make it so that others do not have to be sorrowful or weep, and it does so by burdening itself with curse after leaden curse. It's an apt stand-in for the Tearful Thing and its child entities being tortured by K Corp, in that context.
I may be stupid, cause that is incredibly obvious
My friends and I have also realised that it's connected to the tags the League invented in order to help track lost children which later were used to watch workers. The name "So That No One Will Cry" sounds like something you'd call such an invention - it makes sure families are not separated. But also, eventually, the beneficial talismans become a way to harm people - tags become tracking devices for workers of the corporation.
@sharoo_draws Oh that's a damn good call!
THE FUCKING CHICKEN!
