    For the 200 or so people that seem to watch this video every day:
    Argo Tuulik, one of the writers behind Disco, is in the middle of a legal battle with the IP holders. He also has a GoFundMe set up because as you can imagine, that shit eats into one's funds.

      By the way - massive kudos for doing proper subtitles for such a long video. Way too many channels farm it out to underpaid gig-work places that have a ton of basic errors, if they even bother at all. I know it's a lot of work so rest assured it doesn't go unappreciated!

      Honestly? It's not that much work. YT can auto-time it if I put in the whole script as a .txt file. Sometimes the words don't match because I changed my mind mid-recording and forget to fix it, but any channel doing pre-recorded content has little excuse.

    Diving into what the pale truly is, is a fascinating part of the game. I always thought it was a representation of all of the information humans have ever forgotten, congealing into a pseudo physical form. That’s the reason that humans seem to be a source, and the reason it’s expansion. Weirdly enough, though, while it did strike me as unique and interesting and existential in my first play through, I regarded it in the same way one regards the fact that the Earth will get swallowed by the sun in several hundred million years. The world is always sort of ending, so it never bothered me much.

    • @Itomon
      @Itomon ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Part of the fun is not knowing exactly how the pale is. Most importantly, consider where each explanation come from is a great insight the video brings, with the moralinterns using the fear of the pale as fear of changing the status quo

    • @localsnek
      @localsnek ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Personally, when I encountered the Pale, I immediately connected it to existential terror. In my eyes, it’s the looming feeling of everything being for nothing, no matter what you do. It’s something you either distract yourself from, or learn to process in a healthier way. Everyone on Earth asks whether their life will have meaning if everything is for nothing, and everyone in Elysium asks whether their life will have meaning if the Pale swallows everything.

    • @lexxiloveless7163
      @lexxiloveless7163 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      to me the pale was anxieties about the forgotten past and the unknown expanse of the future, it seems to be something that affects everyone but talk of the pale seems moreso in transient areas like revechol because of their place in limbo. it could be an expanse of secrets and wonder or it could be just nothingness. some people want to explore/cross it and others wonder if it will swallow everything into nothingness.

    • @AzraelSoulHunter
      @AzraelSoulHunter ปีที่แล้ว +5

      To me Pale is in a way The End of all things. And I feel like it creates a funny commentary that people still decide to squabble among each other about politics when the world around them is ending.

    • @Ixarus6713
      @Ixarus6713 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      To me, the Pale seemed to be a cosmic destruction of anything which exists, seeking to eliminate anything not just passively living.
      This explains why Harry is the best offence against it according to Shivers, he is 100% pure, concentrated personality, emotion and politics. He's the "everything" to fight the Pale's "nothingness". He's the most "living" person to exist, to the po8nt that he's almost entirely in the present, apart from his existential dread and trauma from Dora.

    • @Itomon
      @Itomon ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I do think of Harry as some kind of "anti-innocence": instead of willing material change that advances existence, he willed non-existence, and got hit by similar forces. That drew attention of the spirit of Revachol and gave "life" to the voices in his head

    • @PotionSmeller

      Коммунизм, это очевидно очень плохая затея. Ведь он даёт: бесплатное образование(от среднего до магистратуры), бесплатную медицину(от стоматологии до хирургии и бесплатную скорую помощь), бесплатное рабочее место во всех уголках страны(по профессии и без), бесплатные вещи производства(если отработали 5 лет на авто-заводе, то получили бесплатно машину, а если на заводе мебели, то бесплатно всю мебель для квартиры и так далее), бесплатное жильё(в зависимости от состава семьи) и бесплатная часть земли(в СССР это были 600 квадратных метров), бесплатные общежития для студентов, низкие цены на продукты питания(потому что их переизбыток в стране не уходит в частные руки по завышенным ценам и на помойку, что не продалось), бесплатные кружки(хобби на любой вкус), бесплатные ежегодные курорты(от работы или для лечения здоровья), безопасное общество(от наркотиков и преступности), запрещает проституцию, запрещает пропаганду антиморальных ценностей(ЛГБТ, и прочее), следит за человеком(чтобы он всегда был при деле в коммунистическом обществе и нашёл отклик и помощь в лицах знакомых людей), запрещает кредитование населения(от ввода его в денежную кабалу), запрещает работодателю определять самостоятельно "рабские" условия труда, направлен на развитие страны и здоровый патриотизм, искореняет религиозные секты и другие виды проявления мошенничества против человечности. Коммунизм, это то, что заставило человечество развиваться и двигаться темпами, которые были невозможны в тех реалиях, хоть и на короткое время. Коммунизм запустил человека в космос, создал НАТО, и дал евреям землю. И именно, он и только он, победил нацистскую Германию, сделав хоть на мгновение мир без войн!

    Your analogy of Dros murdering Lely to punish Klaasje to the Moralintern destroying the Commune to punish La Revacholiere to deconstruct his bullshit "The bourgeois are not human" monologue was beautiful
    It's worth noting that in both cases, the "Killer" used a weapon of comparatively overwhelming power from incredible distance to do the deed, an attack neither victims could have seen coming, let alone do anything to stop or defend against.
    With Dros, it was his breech-loading high-caliber sniper rifle; and with the Moralintern, it was the massive army of the Coalition, but especially their airships.

    Thank you for this video. Despite the fact that I liked the creation of ZA/UM (at least the ZA/UM that created Disco Elysium) and I understood that it was deeper than it is, although I could not fully realize and express it, and despite the fact that I went through it and returned several times, I cannot say that I have progressed to the neighboring shore after several attempts to complete the game again.
    But your video has revealed more deeply my understanding of the events taking place in the world of the game. But more importantly, you made me think about myself more than once (not a bad start to the year)
    During these almost three hours, I almost cried several times and several times found myself just staring at the monitor, no longer hearing anything, completely immersed in myself.
    You rekindled the idea in me to start writing something. The idea that flares up and goes out several times a day and who knows, maybe it will fade out again by the time I finish this comment.
    And despite the fact that several of your phrases expressed and reflected more meaning in me than I will ever be able to write in my pathetic attempts to express at least some kind of holistic thought (as I am doing now)
    But I will try. Not only because the very idea of expressing at least a little of my thoughts through text, in order to let them be read and give, if not temporary confidence in a better future, then at least a smile, at the same time scares me with the thought that I will not be able to express it, but excites me so much that I cannot sleep.
    Maybe it's because for today's me in my early twenties, the idea of creating at least something distracts me enough not to pay attention to how empty and repetitive my life is, but it doesn't distract enough to finally start doing at least something.
    But I'm going to try, because what can we do but try?
    Thanks a lot again.

    This video is a masterpiece and each section pushes me towards so many directions of thought and even action in my personal life, it feels bigger than my memory and attention can muster up.
    I feel like I'll have to rewatch it and comment and think about each part separately.

    I crushed through the game multiple times in just a couple weeks during this winter sale and found myself similarly in love with the story. I also found myself like your scrounging around for content that was a comprehensive and satisfying analysis. After hours and hours of disappointment and/or the desire for more- this is the one. THANK YOU

    this video essay is beautiful. you are fantastically articulate, your script was touching, moving, and exceptionally humane to the nuanced, flawed and compelling bunch of characters in this utter masterpiece of a game. the way you concluded your analysis threatened to bring tears to my eyes. this is, without a doubt in my mind, the most HARDCORE analysis of Disco Elysium, and you bet i’m going to share this video til my dying breath

    ideas permeating the air, the pale, the phasmid changing the air, revachol/shivers communicating to harry thru wind (thus the air) - this thread of imagery in Disco Elysium somehow completely escaped my notice and it changes how I look at a lot of things!! Its an insanely beautiful and interesting way at looking at it, thank you for pointing it out. Awesome video

    Honest to Dei, well done. You really are allowed to pat yourself on the back for this. I'm gonna check out the rest of your catalogue in due time as I've experienced most of what's covered there.

    Beautiful essay! Watched it in one breath. Genuinely impressed by how fresh your analysis of one of my favourite games feels after countless "essays" talking about same mundane things about DE over and over and you going into more philosophical dimension. I really enjoyed your "story beat from character to character" progression, and your thoughts about the God, the Pale and the Air felt like you put in words what I personally couldn't connect because I couldn't find the glue to put between the pieces myself. Thank you for your work, Happy New years, and greetings from Ukraine
