I played with tons of NHLers and hit as high as the nahl, there is both a huge gap and small between myself and say an NHLer, my hands are nhl tier but my decision making ain’t there and other small things. Of course it isn’t easy and having played with Stanley cup guys as my linemates there are just intangibles and mentality and decision making that make a world of difference assuming technique is all Equal. Bottom line is you can be damn good and not make the league and that’s okay. I’m fine being an excellent beer league player and that’s what most of the truly great players who don’t make it will end up being anyways! Good luck to those of you chasing the dream, goes by quick!

I'd take Barkov. He started seriously developing strength about three years ago, and dared to start using it in earnest in last year's playoffs. He goes through the middle like a moose and is strong like a bear in the corners. He has a great ability to keep the puck in his possession even if it bounces off the stick to the equipment or even to his head. He just moves to the goal and knocks the puck in or passes exactly where he needs to. Also, scraping the puck from behind from the attacker creates situations for the team like the quarterback's throw in American football.

You give a great balanced analysis. Thought i’ve never played hockey, I’m a huge FL cats fan. Somethings I’d like to point out here. 1. I would in no way call Barkov a power forward. He has never fought, does not have a net front presence, and his role in the forecheck is more about stick lifting than hitting. Barkov is a defensive center who’s high stick handling level, puck distribution, and penalty ability has shifted his style to be more like a two way center. Barkovs hits and physicality only emerged under Paul Maurice. I dont mean this comment to sound like a dismissive correction to the Power Forward point either. This is a good thing for young players to think about. Barkov’s number of hits has grown EXPONENTIALLY in the past two years. This point is important because I believe it shows how his balanced play-style has allowed for his game to evolve as he has improved. Young hockey players can really learn from watching how he has developed in his time in the NHL. If you play with solid fundamentals and dont forgo your defensive responsibilities for more scoring chances there is more room for you to always improve on the “little things” and coaches LOVE players who can commit themselves in that way. More players will try to play like Matthews, but dont have his sheer talent. Barkovs style of game is more achievable because it is more about work rate and attention to detail. 2. Barkovs game raises both the floor and ceiling or all the players around him. His play allows other players to take risks and not have their team lose because of those mistakes, while also knowing how and when to feed them the puck. While I believe Matthews only raises the Ceiling for players around him, not the floor. I think this is a key reason Leaf fans get so frustrated, when they are clicking, the talent on that team is good enough to win a cup. But your team wont always be firing at their ceiling, sometimes you need players who can will their team to win when they are at their worst. Barkov does that.

Both are fantastic! Too many people forget that hockey is a team game, and no one player will win you the cup. Thats a real brainrot take. And lets be honest, this last years panthers team was an absolute unit. When a guy like Verhaeghe is your 6th best foreward, you know your team fecks! Bob was otherworldly till the 3 game skid, probably the best goaltending in a playoffs ive seen seen binnington with stl back in 2019. And that defense was nuts as well. And as a jets fan pomo is the most underrated coach in the league. It still amazes me how much he got out of the jets after they basically tuned him out.

@gTuya11 oh it wasn't my intent to say it was. His take was quite balanced. Lot's of fans. However, it seems they don't even know line changes happen. It's like they think their guy plays 60 minutes a night and is the only reason their team gets a win 🤣🤣🤣 It's like they think it's a slight against the other team, but in reality it's just showing they know very little about the sport, and it makes very good players go underappreciated. Players like Forsling, who imo was your most consistent player all playoffs. Or players like Bennett, who's always had a knack for being clutch and always playing a strong balanced chippy game.

Hughes did nothing in the playoffs when he actually played against solid competition. I think Roman JoSi dominates more than Hughes. Hughes is overrated to the maximum level. He’s actually not as fast as what he should be being a little guy. I’d take Evan Bouchard over him to run my PP any day and we’d win more. Hughes is a liability in the playoffs against the big boys. And it isn’t because he’s little. It’s because of his play style. Sam Girard has more agility and puck dominance even. The only reason Sami girard doesn’t put up big numbers is because makar is in the team.
