    At 2:13, look at Nugent-Hopkins (top-middle of the frame) gathering up inconspicuous runway speed for a prime option "B" scoring location at 2:18. Looks like that is part of the set play as well. Great stuff!

    What actually happened in the Hyman goal is the following:
    The puck and all other players were in front of the D's while McDavid skated behind them after the face-off. This in itself made it hard for the D's to track McDavid's position because they also had to track where the puck and all the other EDM players are and where they are going.
    Simultaniously, McDavid moved horizontally from one side of the rink to the other, which momentarily confused the D's as for a little moment they didn't know which one of them has McDavid. This led to the situation where both D's followed McDavid to the right side of the rink, further messing up their positioning and awareness.
    As a result of all that is said above, when McDavid received the pass from the point, ANA left D (#46) was completely out of position. What is worse, however, is that he didn't recognized Hyman sneaking to the far post.
    As for the right D, due to the momentary confusion caused by McDavid's movement he wasn't properly positioned either to defend McDavid once he got the puck.
    As a conclusion of all of this, McDavid was able to drive to the middle and find Hyman all alone at the backdoor. A beautiful set play from Edmonton, eventhough Anaheim's defensive effort was questionable. However, hockey is about coercing your opponents to make mistakes and capitalizing on those mistakes as often as you can. A "perfect" hockey game with no mistakes would end 0-0.

    • @conscious_hockey
      @conscious_hockey  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great description and analysis! What do you think could be done to replicate this type of confusion and mismatch in non set play scenarios?

    • @tob564
      @tob564 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@conscious_hockey I think players and teams constantly try to cause mismatch and misplacement among the opponents. That's what 5-on-5 hockey is all about, ultimately.
      There are many ways to create mismatch, and thereforevspace and opportunities, in hockey. Some of the ways are simply winning 1v1's, a sudden change of pace or utilizing the speed difference between you and a defender in general (McDavid is the king of this), screening, changing positions with your teammates or driving to the middle which usually causes the defence to pile up on the attacking player.
      This also why the best playmakers are masters of timing: waiting just that couple tenths of second before passing the puck makes the opponent move just that little bit closer to the passer which creates a little bit more space behind the defender. Also, that usually means that the defender gains more momentum towards the passer which is ultimately the wrong direction if the pass reaches a player behind said defender. Again, more time and space is won.
      Of course, one of the most important ways to cause misplacement among the opponemt team is to capitalize quickly on turnovers. That is the reason why, especially in North American hockey, quick transition game is commonly valued very highly. It inevitably takes a little bit of time for a team to structure their defensive formation properly after giving away the puck, which is usually the best time to strike.

    • @conscious_hockey

    • @conscious_hockey
      @conscious_hockey  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, I think after watching the McDavid assist on Hyman's goal the face-off was a set play of some kind. To me this configuration is really hard to defend whether it was or wasn't a set play. I look at the rest of his shifts and see a clear habit of building up speed in unique to McDavid ways. I think the way to defend McDavid would be to have one mind controlling all five defensive players. Basically a really good unit of overlapping pressure that disrupt his off puck speed buildups.

    • @leonardmccannon3136
      @leonardmccannon3136 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can bet this is exactly the sort of video opponents are looking at to avoid being victimized in the same way. Losing the draw clean when Mcdavid is on the ice is a big problem.
      Mistake #1 Mcdavid gets to jump past the opposing center. Tough to prevent it but he got away really fast.
      Mistake number 2. Both the center and the left dman are focused on Mcdavid and drift to (camera angle) left side of the ice, and Hyman posts up on the right side all alone . Freeze fame at 14 seconds and look at the position. It’s already the perfect storm for the set play to work. Mcdavid already knows what he is going to do. The whole play was executed to perfection.

    Good Idea for a video but way to long and scripted like a school assignment.
    If you wanted it longer, you can show clips of similar plays in the Ozone where McDavid is at Center.
    This video could have been shorter. It’s a set play. RHF plays LW drives to back door post. D always go DtoD so McDavid goes to where the puck is going to be.
    It didn’t make sense for you to show and talk about Zone Entries, when this is an Ozone set play.

    • @conscious_hockey
      @conscious_hockey  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Putting the "set play" concept aside, I don't really see a significant difference in strategy from zone to zone. Yes the areas of the ice are different but I see the same underlying mentality. Well, sure, it's nearly impossible to stop him because you're not allowed to touch him. The league has made it abundantly clear that if you impede his figure skating in any way, your team will be penalized. That's why he'll never hoist the cup. The longer you go in the season and playoffs, the more the hits and hard play count. If he played in the Eastern conference during the regular season it might toughen him up, but the league won't let that happen because the second he hands out one of his cheapshot hacks, he'll get buried.

    As for Mc?Defense?, the "BEST" players in the world play on a rink that's 200 feet long, and has more than 2 zones. Crosby, Bergeron, Ovechkin (eventually learned), Point & Kutcherov, Kopitar, et al; going back, The Sedin's, Yzerman, Francis, Sakic, Datskyuk, et al. Back in the day, The USSR officials called Bob Gainey "The best hockey player in the world"! Because he could score on a cherry-picking breakout? No, because of his play at both ends of the ice. McDavid IS NOT the "best hockey player" in the world, or The NHL, or anywhere. He may be the best offensive player in the game, and that's arguable, but I'll give it to him. He certainly seems to be the best speed skater. But (if I had access) I could put together (EASILY) 100+ video highlights showing McDavid coasting off somewhere in no-man's land, not a player near him, while his team was scored upon. And I wouldn't have to look very hard to get there... If I did his whole career, I don't know how many that number would reach...??? It would be A LOT.

    • @conscious_hockey
      @conscious_hockey  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So if you were McDavid's coach you could probably teach him to play proper defense. I'd say McDavid is the best at 1 on 1 offense so imagine if you combined that with some of the attributes you described, he'd be unstoppable. In my opinion it is more difficult to develop 1 on 1 offensive skill to the level McDavid is at than defensive responsibility to the level you described in those players. Would you agree?

    • @davideaston6944
      @davideaston6944 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@conscious_hockey Yes (mostly), I would agree. However, even his "magical" movement around the ice in the offensive zone, as you describe it here, are simple "set plays", like the one off the faceoff ("Where is he going?")... This same play is enacted by many teams. He's not as magical as you seem to think, or even 'ahead of the play' (like Gretzky was, for example). If he was, he'd be breaking up many more plays defensively, NATURALLY, without coaching. But, yeah, it's developed with every player that starts out with high-than-average offensive skills: They are taught / learn defense, and THEN go on to being great overall players, that help win championships. I'm not arguing he's amazingly skilled skater and stickhandler, even shooter... But where has that got him so far? A scoring title. Well, good for him.

    • @conscious_hockey
      @conscious_hockey  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@davideaston6944 I suppose I am condensing a lot of examples into the few that you see here. I watch a lot of boring McDavid shifts along with other players boring uneventful shifts. He tends to be just as defensively responsible as other super stars that have won cups but has a far more unique off puck movement strategy. I'm slowly organizing a compare and contrast video to showcase this point, I hope I'll be able to read your response to that :)
