The thing that sets Barkov apart from other players is that he is ALWAYS in the right position. In the defensive zone, he's the best in the NHL at knowing when to either stick to his man and use that long reach to pester the puck carrier, cheat off his man and get agressive at the blue line (see his assist on Reinhart's goal in game 3 of the final), play the shooting angle for a shot block (block on Pastrnak), or help on the boards to allow a clean clear or breakout (his assist to Verhaeghe in game 1 of the final). Offensively, he knows when to drift near the puck or on the softside of the defense in a way that reminds me of Crosby, while also being so difficult to knock off the puck due to his size, strength, and puck handling in a way that's like a mix of Datsyuk and Kopitar. As a lifelong Panthers fan, he's been my favorite player since his rookie year because of his IQ, and I was crying tears of joy like crazy when he finally got to lift the cup.
Enjoyed the content but I was hoping to see more about the defensive side of the play, as well as play without the puck. This analysis was only about the offensive zone with the puck and thus hardly a full analysis. Your style and delivery was very conscise and easy to follow. Looking to see some more.
They're both great players. But I think Barkov is overall the better player. His defensive skills combined with his offence is just incredible. Also he was able to shut down ''the best player in hockey'' when it mattered the most.
I agree. McDavid is the best player to put up points but Barky is incredibly complete. He just kills offense and creates it. He does every thing possible. I would pick him before McDavid. For some this is insane but it's not just the points
Agreed, there's a reason Barkov set the postseason record for takeaways and shut down the best player from each team we played this postseason at 5v5 (Kucherov, Pastrnak, Panarin/Zibanejad, McDavid/Draisaitl). For the record, McDavid only had 1 point vs. Barkov at 5v5 all series. That's no disrespect to McDavid though, he is absolutely incredible.
@@JoshActionReplay Letting McDavid score once in a 7 game series against you is insanity. Also only one goal with those guys you mentioned combined. That's insane. Nobody does that
@@Reladan187 Absolutely bud, mindblowing stuff. As a lifelong Panthers fan, it's been a pleasure watching him mature from that timid kid as a rookie, to growing under Jagr's tutelage and eventually becoming our team's greatest player ever
I agree. I think ultimately it's more important to shut down the offense and put up points than just to put up points. And he's play led to the cup. McDavid's didn't. But I guess when a canadian touches Gretzky they won't let a Finnish player get it. And on top of it all I think McDavid just took it as salt to the wounds
Mcdavid had his (pointswise)record breaking post season, that's what they'll argue.. But Barky shut down Kuch in the first round, Pastrnak in second and Panarin in the conference finals(they scored combined 1 goal against Barky).. Then the last 2 games of the finals he took the air and space out of McDavid, McD didn't score.. All this plus Barky scores lots of points and clutch goals, and led his team to the finals second time in a row and more importantly won it this time. But the Oilers' golden boy had to get an award since they couldn't win the cup i guess..
so crazy he is only 28. sometimes forget how young he was when Florida drafted him. He still 4 years away from his prime too. i hope Okposo splits his 500k with the boys and helps retain the team. they can do what Tampa did, and much more but hopefully without the exploitation of the LTIR.
You could make a complete video reviewing Barkov defensive positioning and sticks when he is playing without the puck. This video doesn't cover that, and is another thing that separates him from other centers.
@@conscious_hockey I'd like to see some analysis of lateral side-to-side movement being used in top shelf/higher up scenarios as well as glove awareness when tracking the puck.
@@conscious_hockeyyou could do a video about Goalies playing the puck, the decision making that goes into how/when/why goalies will come out of the net and look at how they can kill dump ins and impact the breakout.
As usual an Excellent breakdown, thank you! Curious - to what extend does it apply to youth levels of hockey since even at the newly created 'elite' category hockey is mostly unstructured so aside of mostly accidental clever plays to exploit the open space, youner players most commonly have to deal with a 'swarm' type situation where there multiple players collapse on the puck?
You must have only watched barkov then. Mcdavid is the best offense and great defense but he doesn’t play defense most of the time. Mcdavid better overall player for sure. But if we are talking about the best defense offense overall Crosby probably takes it if not mcd.
Barkov was just incredible all playoffs. I've never seen a forward defend so perfectly, nobody was able to move trough him. And everyone knows his offensive skillset from the shootout highlights. McJesus is fast, the fastest ever, unfortunately that's basically all he has.
that would be a great way to compare apples to oranges since styles that are being reviewed here are individual, vs getting a cup is obviously a team achievement!

I'm glad Barkov is finally getting recognition. The three best players in the league are McDavid, Barkov and MacKinnon. It has been for several years already. Three players with very different playing style, you can argue for each one of them being the best player in the world. Barkov had to win a cup for people to recognize him.
