Chunky Tomato Soup
This chunky tomato soup is simply wonderfully delicious! I grew up with the canned tomato soup and was not a fan of it. After getting on my own, I had not had tomato soup for about 40 years or so until about a few months ago. Then I had 2 samples of chunky tomato soup from 2 different restaurants and fell in love with this tomato soup! I liked the chunky tomato soup so much that I found a recipe online to try, from roastedroot.net. It was wonderful! I have now made this chunky tomato soup a few times and wanted to share it with y'all. So, if you are looking for something truly delicious, try this video for directions on how to make chunky tomato soup. Some of the tools Gail uses are in the links below. Just click on the Amazon affiliate links to view or purchase the items. The recipe is also listed below. Thank you for watching! Chunky Tomato Soup Recipe
2-3 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/2 tablespoons butter
1 medium-sized onion, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 28-ounce cans whole, peeled tomatoes, cut up (diced tomatoes might
work as well; I just have not tried them.)
1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil
1/2 teaspoon pepper
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1-3 cups vegetable broth (add how much you want to make a good soup)
Put the olive oil and butter into a large dutch oven pot. Add chopped onion and celery and saute over medium heat until translucent or for about 10 minutes or so. While the onions and celery are cooking, get the whole tomatoes ready. Make sure the peeling is off. (Most cans still have the peeling, even though they say they are peeled.). Chop the tomatoes into medium chunks. As soon as the onions and celery are sauteed, add tomatoes. Add basil, pepper, and salt and stir. Add baking soda and stir. The soup will become a little frothy, and this is normal. Add the vegetable broth. Bring to a boil and then simmer for a few minutes. I usually simmer for about 10-15 minutes. This is delicious with grilled cheese sandwiches! Enjoy!

Thank you for sharing a delicious looking tomato soup recipe. I will enjoy having the soup here at my home too. 🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅
Do you call them POLLINGS....???
I can’t wait to try it! I love toffee and I make this the regular way during the holidays. But I would love to try your “soft crunch” version also. And Totally off topic…but your kitchen is Fabulous with all the red decor. So festive at Christmas time, but a look that can totally go all year round.
Thank you! I hope you make this toffee. Please let me know how it turned out. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Merry Christmas!
I made a half batch and they turned out good. They are definitely chewy, like caramel--and loaded with pecans. The recipe is very easy to follow and the results are more than satisfactory. I topped some of them with melted chocolate and called them turtle clusters. They will be added to my Christmas candy-making list again next year. Thanks!
Looks delicious!

Hello. If you go to the Description tab, you will find the recipe. Please let me know if you can't find it, and I will send it to you. Thank you for watching!

Remove immediately .Dump 1 C pecans ,2 T butter.Spoon out as quickly as you can onto parchment paper.Small batch. 16 small pieces .try it
How did you resist having a bite at the end of the recipe. I was drooling, not a good look! Thank you for this recipe. Will be making this for Christmas period. ❤
Dear Mrs Gail, thank you so much for sharing this delicious recipe for crunchy butter toffee. I used to have a recipe for this but I lost it, so I'm very glad that I found your channel. I'm Australian and, of course, we celebrate Christmas in the middle of summer, so I make this buttery crunchy toffee and then I break it up into pieces and fold them through a quart of good quality bought vanilla ice cream. Then I spoon it into a large loaf pan or pudding basin lined with plastic wrap and put it in the freezer to keep until I serve it on Christmas day with a Caramel and Brandy Sauce. It's yummy and everyone seems to like it. Your recipe is definitely the best one I've found. Love and gratitude from Amanda Jones in Melbourne. xox ❤️
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment! I am so glad you found the recipe and it brought back good memories!
Hi my friend I really wanted to now how to make pea an but you talk so much that I had to stop because you was talking to much I wish you did have to talk so much
Good BLOOPER !!! Corn Starch
Thank you for this video. I was looking for chewy pralines. I found 3 recipes before this one. Thank you for checking the pecans.
This is similar to my Grandma’s recipe for Snickerdoodles. Most recipes call for vanilla, which detracts from the signature “tang” that makes it a Snickerdoodle. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing Ms. Gail, God bless.😊❤
Love your video! I was looking for a soft chewy praline. I’ve made twice. I have a question. Are they supposed to be tacky after setting? Is there anything I can do to make them not so sticky to the touch. They are yummy and are beautiful. Thank you so much!
Thank you! No, they are not supposed to be tacky. One reason why they might be tacky is that maybe they need to cook just a little longer on the stove, and that might be your thermometer. At one point, my thermometer started registering too low, and the pralines were just a little too soft. So, I bought a digital thermometer. Also, make sure to put them on lightly buttered parchment paper. I hope this helps. Let me know how they turn out.
@@southernglancewithgail7945 thank you so much! I will try again. They are delicious!

Interesting. The so called Russian tea, known as "tea a la Russe," was a beloved concoction in the South a century ago, featuring black tea, lemon, sugar, and served over ice. While it originated in the Russian empire, over the past century, tea has been primarily enjoyed hot in Russia, often with a lemon wedge and sugar. Nowadays, tea a la Russe has transformed into what's known as American iced tea (or Southern Tea). However, the recipe showcased in the video resembles how tea is often enjoyed in Siberia, using sea buckthorn juice instead of Tang.
THANK YOU! This is the recipe I was looking for (chewy). These turned out perfectly - so delicious!
Thank you! I'm so glad you tried them! We LOVE them also!
Thank you! I love your kitchen!
Thank you! 😊
What about brown sugar? Would that work? I wonder what taste difference that would make.
Brown sugar would definitely change things in the recipe, especially if you only use brown sugar and not any other sugar. I have just never tried brown sugar before in this recipe, and that would be an interesting experiment. If you try using brown sugar, please let me know how you like it.
It would Definitely change the taste! Brown sugar is just white sugar with MOLASSES added to it! The molasses taste would overwhelm and take over any buttery toffee taste.
This recipe is da bomb! My wife and I made up a half-batch and we're so sorry that we didn't go all the way! I did toast the pecans a little, but I won't do that next time... it's unnecessary and it adds just the slightest bitterness to an otherwise perfect prAline (long A). Sorry, in Texas we say it that way. Or at least I do. Google says it's prah-leen, like Gail says, but no matter which way you say it, these are dang good!
I am so glad you enjoyed them. I just made them a few days ago for my mom's 90th birthday party, and they were such a huge hit. They make a wonderful Valentine's candy! Thanks for your comment. It made my day! Have a great February!
Just watched your video. Very well done. I'm going to make some toffee for coffee hour at church. Going to do it for Valentine's Day.
Thank you! Good luck with your toffee. The tip I have for you is to make sure you use good butter and if the butter begins to separate, stir to get it together again. Then only stir every once in a while. Let me know how you like it.
Have you ever tried lady fingers instead of crackers?
Hi, Mrs. Gail, thank you so much for sharing your delicious recipe ❤, I absolutely love love toffee, I'm definitely will be making some soon😁
You are so welcome! We love this toffee. Let me know how you like it!
Are the temperatures you cooked the candy to for sea level? If you live above sea level you have to adjust your temperature.
The altitude where I live is about 1299'. Yes, you are right, altitude does make a difference, and you do have to adjust your temperature to make it match to your altitude.
I stirred mine like I normally do when making caramel. The toffee is grainy and not hardening correctly. Still tasted good.
I wonder if you over stirred. I'm saying this because I made some caramel sauce for dipping apples and stirred the whole time with a whisk. Mine turned out grainy as well. Mine has never come out grainy like that. So, I think I over stirred it, and that made it grainy. So, I made some of this Soft Crunch Butter Toffee, and it came out wonderful. Here is what I did. I followed my instructions, but my butter started to get more watery. I stirred and stirred just until the butter was mixed in good, and then I stopped stirring all the time. I only stirred every once in a while. When it was done, I poured the mixture into the pan and had forgotten to put in the vanilla. While the mixture was in the pan, I added the vanilla and gently stirred until the vanilla was all stirred in. Then, I followed the directions again. Turned out wonderful. Oh, I did use Land O Lakes butter and not the cheaper butter. Hope this helps. Good luck in the future. Let me know how it turns out the next time.
Thank you for this. It was a pleasure watching you go through this with a calm spirit. I just made this exact pie and it came out perfectly. Thank you again, and I hope in Jesus name you have a peaceful day and new year
Thank you so much! I am tempted to make this into a custard without a pie crust. One of my friends does not like pie crusts, but loves this pie. I might make it for her birthday. Have a great 2024 year!
@@southernglancewithgail7945 Oooo! That could be good I'm sure. My father is the same way, he rarely like the crust. Thank you! And the same to you ❤️
😊😊
Gail. I LOVE your video. You are a wonderful host.
Thank you SO MUCH! I hope you have a good 2024!
Adjust this for elevation: For every 1000 feet subtract 2 degrees.
The elevation where I live is around 1299 feet. Also, make sure you use really good butter. Good luck and Merry Christmas!
Thank you! It “looks” so easy…I might just try it!
It is SO easy. I keep mine in the refrigerator. If you have ever had Braum's chocolate covered peanuts, this reminds me of that. Let me know how it turns out for you. Merry Christmas!

You're welcome 😊. Merry Christmas!
Just tried your recipe today and it is wonderful !! These are just the right texture, I am so happy with the result!!
I am SO happy you enjoyed them. They are my favorites!
My local candy shop makes this and I would treat myself to some around the holidays but the other day when I went by they raised the price to $56 a pound I’m going to try this and make it myself.
I know what you mean. Prices are so high right now, and it is definitely cheaper to make your goodies. Do get a high quality butter. I find the cheaper butters have more liquid content. I'm using Land O' Lakes for my cooking. Let me know how they turn out. Oh, last night, I just made the gingerbread cookies. They are SO soft! I hope you have a Merry Christmas!
@@southernglancewithgail7945 thanks for the tip. I will use Cabot butter as it’s what I sell in my store. If all goes well I’m going to make this tomorrow if it’s not raining out. I’ll let you know. Thanks for the recipe.
If you melt the butter in the heavy ceam in the microwave or a small saucepan, you won't lose as much heat when adding the butter & cream to your pot so it doesnt take as long to bring back to temp. I cant wait to make these.. i ordered the candy thermometer you use.. mine have all been broken over the years. I love the caramel type pralines... dont really care for the sugared types.. yum! Cant wait! Thanks!!
Great idea! Also, I now have a digital thermometer which I am very happy with. Good luck with this recipe. Let me know how they turn out for you.
I tried this recipe. Too chewy. It’s basically caramel with pecans. Not a traditional New Orleans pecan praline.
That’s the first thing she said..”these are chewy”.
Even if that's true I haven't tried it yet, we should thank her for being so kind to make it! Be kind!
They are chewy and super delicious! I do not like the crunchy kind, but that's just me. It is each person's choice. Merry Christmas!
Which, had you been paying attention, is exactly what she told us at the start of the video....
I’m not saying this is a bad recipe but you have pralines that are sugary and you have pralines that are slightly on the chewy side. These are neither. These are not pralines, they are caramel with pecans. Get offended if you want to but I’m calling it the way it is. If someone is expecting a praline with a slight chew, they will be disappointed.
The key to using waxed paper is putting newspaper under it. The wax doesn’t stick to the newspaper. I do this every year. You can also use aluminum foil, and use it over if you’re making more than one batch
I have to try these
Looks like a great recipe, and I appreciate that you use a thermometer. Quick tip: if you warm your cream before adding, it will reach temperature faster.
I've watched a lot of videos over 3 days & by far this video is the best...The other videos in order to make this you had to stand, don't stop stirring & turn the heat down then repeat then repeat & repeat ..I don't know about anyone else but I'm disabled & i just can't stand & continuely be stirring... I was about to stop looking until i seen "Southern Glance With Gail" & I thought ok this will be my last video I'll watch....Gail I was amazed on how you make it so easy to make & those others were just wasting their energy...ill soon be making this & I'll let you know how it turned out... Thanks a Million.....🤠
These are some of my favorites to make. Butter makes a HUGE difference with this recipe. Do get a higher quality butter. I'm using Land O' Lakes butter. Thanks for your comment!
I would’ve liked to see them up close and see you touch it and take a bite to see the chew. I’ve never seen a chewy praline. Thank you for the recipe and the tip on the pan. They both look amazing.
Good suggestions! I'll try that in the future. Let me know if you make these and what you think.
I have had a soft praline and they are delicious @@southernglancewithgail7945
Can I just omit the coconut or do I need to lower the applesauce?
I would just omit the coconut if you don't like it. I would keep the applesauce the same.
