Hi, my name is Mark Zoel. I make TH-cam videos documenting my recovery from a kidney transplant to help anyone who is going through the same experience or for someone looking for some vital details leading up to their transplant.
I was diagnosed with Lupus in 2008 when I was 17 and in Dec 2018 I had a kidney transplant from a living donor (my little brother).
Before my transplant I was an avid runner and took part in lots of 5k Parkruns, multiple Tough Mudder events and the occasional long distance charity run.
I hope you can join me on my journey as I aim to get back to full fitness and show how I can improve my health after my transplant.
Please check out my videos and SUBSCRIBE if you like what you see.
Thanks for stopping by :)

5:53 What's Going To Happen Next?
9:57 No Antibodies Doesn't Mean No Protection

I explain why this is the case and how common this is amongst the 'immune-suppressed community' and highlight what my doctor thinks will happen to us to protect us in the future.
I then discuss the plans already in place to help protect us moving forward.
I finish my talking about where to go to find the best guidance and what I personally think about getting more vaccines.
Hope you enjoy 😊

The stent sucks! Worse that the kidney stone ever was! It’s a fucking torture device!
😊
Had a bit of trouble after kidney stones, as my urethras are to narrow. Had multiple stents put in: they can only stay in for 6 weeks or so, otherwise the risk of a dangerous infection rises. Removing them was never a problem. Unfortunately I got an infection when I was in a different city and had to go to the ER. They told me they could easily swap it, but told me it was policy of the department to do it without anasthesia. Slightly aprehensive I agreed, and the proceedure was done by two very nice ladies. Surprisingly it was mainly uncomfortable and not really painful. The great advantage was being able get up immediately after they had finished and just walk away - no problems with the after effects of the anasthesia. If possible I would always opt for this method.
I just had my stent removed. I'm glad that I was given anesthesia and was out of it. Me and pain don't work well. Dealing with a catheter for a couple of weeks was more than enough for me.
doc pls responce me..i have surgery last week for kidney stone now they tald me after 2weeks they have remove something in my stomuch..wat is that doc??
my ureteral is huge and scared
Do a update?!
Great video.
I had two urinary stents for kidney stones. After the doctor used a laser to blast the stones, he inserted two stents one for the left kidney and one for the right kidney. They are extremely painful 😣 when going pee and often times I had to use IBUPROFEN and a few times the doctor gave me antibiotics for an infection that got in my urinary system. I have felt the cystoscope many many times, and yes he is right they give you a numbing gel, however once he uses the scope and it goes up through the prostrate you definitely feel it and into the bladder, you feel like you have to pee while they are looking inside. I myself don’t like looking at the bladder because I want them to take the stent out asap. The stent pain while peeing almost felt like someone was punching my lower back and I swear tynolel did not help, only IBUPROFEN did the trick. Also one time I had to get a neprotomy tube in my back out of my right kidney, and after they remove that, there is a little hole in your back until the kidney heals up, there is pee coming out of the back until that area heals, besides coming out the front, I swear that was the worst pain as well. I agree with this guy my stents were inserted while I was knocked out very true, but when they remove them it’s in the office
Will be removing mine in two weeks time. This is my second time. The last one I did was in 2017.
Major Kudos! You are among the very few who speak about the pain in the first days after major surgery! So many start relating their journey AFTER the horrible first days. I hope you are doing g well. Cheers
Can’t be any worse than the pain I’m getting urinating after the op to remove the stones
I had anesthesia
Presently theirs stent inside me and its painful
Hey mate. Hi. Did your moon face went down with lower dosages? I started with 30 mg a day and now I’m on 5gm a day and wondering if this low dosage will get rid of my moon face
Excellent video. Thank you for posting!
After I came here of my stent removal there is no pain removing the stent its take 15 to 30 sec to removing so worry gays
Didn't hurt for.me at all.... Didn't even feel nothing...was just enbarrassed a little.
When my kidney stent right side removal after bleeding 4-5 hours is any problem bleeding in future
Wait you were awake?!! They are putting me to sleep and I’m stressed about it
I get my 2nd lazer op on 17th this month I've had a stent for 3.5 months is been HELL unable to hardly walk developed type 2 and blood pressure high..worst thing I've ever been through and even worse than a knee transplant because the stent is 10 times worse pain..8 days to go I get general anasthetic and then lazeroscopy and NO MORE AGONISING DOUBLE J STENT..
I had my stent out 4 hours ago. They used numbing lotion told me they would come back in a few minutes, I waited for the doctor about a half hour, needless to say It was the most painful experience ever and too pee was very painful. (keep in mind there was no string attached to the stent, they sometimes do this, the doctor said, because that way they can take a 18 inch tube and go up thru my uretha into the kidneys to grab the stent left behind and that would not require a another surgery. It was so painful.. ;( So if your string isnt attached to your stent.. all I can say is good Luck.. I litterally had to come home and take a pain pill because Everytime I pee it hurts so paid .. For all you that had a string attached , I bet yours was a breeze to pull out..
Think it is more like aching kind of pain.
Hey Bro, My transplant is next Monday. Your videos have helped me prepare. Thank you
Thanks Mark. Beneficial video for me after my transplant. I just did my transplant 2024
Hi Mark, I'm Krishna from Malaysia. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Its was very useful. I have questions, I just did my transplant and currently in the 4 week but my feet keep swelling. Do you encounter the same issues.
Had mine removed this week. I was so happy to get it out - it hurt a lot having it in there. Coming out, very similar, except I'm a woman, so maybe it hurt less. They had me put my heels together and drop my knees out. They cleaned all the bits with something that was VERY COLD! Then the surgeon injected some lidocaine. That felt weird and slightly uncomfortable, and burned a little. They cover you up while they wait a few min for the lidocaine to work. The rest was exactly as you described. He went in with the camera, I could watch on the screen. He found the stent, sprayed some water in, told me to take a deep breath, and pulled it out. Weirdest feeling in the world, but also relief. Nurse wiped all the bits clean with a warm cloth. Flashbacks to being a baby and having a diaper change!! Then it burned a little for about 30 min. There was a little blood in my urine after but not much. Pretty much back to normal an hour or so later. Having the stent in me was much much worse than the procedure to get it removed.
I got stent and didn't hurt at all. It was uncomfortable that was it...
I just want to ask if staple remover is painful or not please someone reply I'm very afraid 😢
From the drugs wearing off to the no sleeping, from the catheter being removed to the gas that got pumped into you, from always being worried about tugging to not being in pain to it definitely being better to heal at home... You guys have described my journey nearly to a T after donating my kidney a few weeks ago. You guys are amazing thank you Mark and Jason
Going through this right now. Had a 6mm kidney stone in the ureter. Currently have 2 string out of the tip. Every time I pass liquid hurts like hell. Luckily my stent gets removed only after 5 days. Been through all that not knocked out. Camera. Lights. I hate it when the doctor says look at the screen. Like dude even with the gel it is uncomfortable as hell. Having my last catheter removed, felt like my soul leaving my body
Hello, I was one of the unlucky ones that had kidney stone issues and had to get surgery to remove them. I too was curious if there would be pain during the tube extraction. After watching this video it gave me a little less anxiety and I can tell you know that its been removed…… I over thought the situation completely. They numb the area ahead of time and When they take it out it feels just like peeing after a long movie holding it in. Slight irritation after but all good. Hope this helps you cause it helped me and my anxiety a lot.
Cystoscopy experience varies from patient to patient. Obviously for men due to anatomical differences, it can be much more painful. For many, if not most, it can be excruciating. Had 125 years ago and it was like torture and has left me with a type of PTSD, medical trauma. so when I found out, I had one two days after a kidney transplant. I hit the ceiling. Fortunately, I eventually found the urologist who would remove it under general anesthesia.
Worst pain of my life
I have this problem india {state-bihar}
What's the solution for this?
Thank you. You’ve really helped me to get through the process ❤
I had it removed a few weeks back. It is uncomfortable and not fun but it's tolerable. They numbed the area and it took about 30 seconds from start to finish. The worse thing is the waiting and anticipation. Don't worry too much.
i had my stents removed today in noon it was bearable during procedure but from evening uretheral pain has got worse and also frequent urination hope it gets okay in coming days
I am your student in year 4 for maths i am arun 😅😅😊😊
Thank you, you are amazing. Helping me on my decision to donate to my sister ❤❤
The stent pain is horrible. Mostly when urinating and then that spasming in the kidney area when it happens.😔 I hope ur feeling better and everyone else is feeling better .
Recently ,2024 Feb.14 done my transplantation .. Same as your journey How about you in today .. Hope keeping well ..may God bless you ..
I love your diary I'm about to start prednisolone opthalmic suspense for herpetic eye disease... Wish me well ❤️🩹
Mine hurt like nothing I ever experienced before, x 2 stents
My days are near 😢
❤❤
How are you now? How is your brother ?
Just got my stint removed and I'm in so much pain.. like I'm passing another stone...kis this normal?
Removing a stent with a string by yourself is a lot easier than going into the clinic and having it removed. I've had both. The one with the string is removed by just a steady pull until it is out entirely. The one without a string requires going into the hospital or clinic and having a urology team literally digging around in your privates.
Hot. White hot. Burning white hot pain that made me feel like my bladder was filled with gasoline and then set alight. THAT is how it felt when my ureteral stent was removed. YMMV, but my mileage well and truly sucked.
