Shaker Drive unit

This video is a test of a Shaker Table drive unit. This is a less-complicated driver than a Wilfley-style, but much less time-consuming to build, and less costly. I wanted to see how well it worked before offering them for sale. It obviously worked really well. These are for smaller tables...probably 24" max, though it would only depend on the motor power. Hi everyone. It's been awhile since I posted a video. I've been busy, as usual. I spent the winter rebuilding this Coot. I have over 350 hours into the rebuild. it's going to be my prospecting rig going forward. I'm also working on a new dry sluice device. Will be applying for a patent on that in the coming months, so can't publicize it. Stay tuned for video on that. Jim
Shaker Table Driver

I've been wanting to build a really good drive unit, for a shaker table, for quite a while. This winter the plan finally came together, and over several weeks of drawing, and building, with many mods along the way, it finally came together. I hope my explanation of how it works is adequate. I may do a followup video with a more detailed explanation, of how the geometry effects the stroke speed ...

I bought this old Champion post drill, back in June, from a guy at Dillon, MT. It was a rusted mess on a pallet. Finally got around to a rebuild a month ago. Had to make some parts, including installation of a slow-speed (45rpm) chain drive. The drill has a two-speed gear setup, and runs at about 50 & 100 rpm. Great for running large hole saws in metal. I think it turned out pretty nice!

    Ya know, guys, I've mentioned in the past about the issue with "Granular Convection", or the Brazil Nut Effect. It's all about the tendency for small particles to "float" larger particles. It's a real thing, too. The reason it's almost impossible to come up with a "dry" method for gems is that very thing. In most cases, you need a difference of at least 4:1 in density to overcome it. Of course gems are only about 1.5:1, so we're screwed.....or were. Ive been experimenting with my backpack version of the dry sluice, and using my new riffle design, I recently recovered 100% of some alumina spheres in a couple of gallons of dirt/gravel. The spheres are, of course, round. The density is almost exactly 3.5. The spheres are all about 1/4" in diameter, so Granular Convection should have seen them all go to tails. They did NOT! I was stunned, to say the least. So, be patient. I think I may have finally solved the problem I started on 10 years ago. I had about given up, but last summer, in Wyoming, the big sluice recovered a few tiny garnets. I thought it was just because they were pretty small, but it kept me experimenting with riffle designs, and I think I may have nailed it. So not only will this recover flour gold without water, or a blower, but maybe gems, too. Jim

Simpler to build, operates more efficiently, and has a higher feed rate. Before selling plans for it, I want to get a couple more trips with it, and winter here in Idaho is brutal...it's going to be awhile before I can get out to work with the new one. Stay tuned!

    • @jimnelson7740
      @jimnelson7740 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay, I've been using plain, old visqueen, or LDPE (low density polyethyline), for wet working, and any flexible fabric for dry...like a light canvas, unless the gold is superfine flour when working dry...then you need a watertight material like heavy visqueen, or a rubberized fabric, so the flour doesn't go through. When working wet, with a 6mil diaphragm you get about 3 hours of use before the plastic gets holes in it. But, it's cheap, and easily replaced.

I got away from this a couple of years ago, and need to get back to it. It will never work for gems, because of "granular convection", but it would work really well for dry gold and metal recovery.

      No, I figured out it's obsidian sand. There's lots of it in the Snake in southern Idaho, because of all the volcanic activity over the eons. Many people mistake those black sands for the iron sands that contain gold. Even I did when i was less experienced. That causes people to miss the flour gold concentrations.

      Ah ha! And thank you. Western Washington, lots of Glacial Till. I realized quick there are two black sands. Just hadn't dug deep enough to figure out what the lighter one was. Still think you should try grooves, not bumps. I'm going to do one similar, with grooves, and a hard stop for one end-stroke or the other.

    Jim, You are such a creative inventor and fabricator - KUDOS. Question: What advantage is a slow pulse every second in the above jig when a vibrator could also fluidize with thousands of pulses and achieve separation from the vast differences of particles using specific gravity? I look forward to your reply.

    • @jimnelson7740
      @jimnelson7740 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I'm so slow getting back, Doug. The answer to your question is frequency vs amplitude. The amplitude on mine, as in most jigs, is really high. The gravel is lifted nearly 1/2 inch on each pulse, which allows the heavier material to settle through the gaps. (differential settlement). With vibration you have the opposite...a very high frequency, but not much lift on the material. That means the gaps between the particles remain closed. Closed gaps means the heavies can't settle through them, thus they go out with the tailings. I'm currently working on anew type of drywasher that utilizes the same idea.

    Would a vibrating table work just as well as a sliding table?

    • @jimnelson7740

      Unfortunately, no. The shaker table has an action that moves faster in one direction than the other. That's what makes the heavies go up the slope towards the cons end, while the lighter material gets washed down the cross slope into the waste troughs.

      Good question, Dusty. You can sometimes eliminate EMI, from a particular source, by adjusting the frequency. Generally, I set the Freq. at center, and if encountering EMI I adjust up and down to try to eliminate it. I've noticed, in testing, that there may be a slight edge in sensitivity by running the Freq, as high as possible. Jim
