  • I've been wanting to build a really good drive unit, for a shaker table, for quite a while. This winter the plan finally came together, and over several weeks of drawing, and building, with many mods along the way, it finally came together. I hope my explanation of how it works is adequate. I may do a followup video with a more detailed explanation, of how the geometry effects the stroke speed at various points of each rotation.

      Many thanks guys! A customer in Chile has built the drive unit. Did a really nice job, too. Made a more simplified unit. he also did a great job on the table. He was just getting to the point of testing last week. I'm hoping to hear from him soon on the testing results.

      @@jdeluisa I've got a pic of the whole machine. Just a short view of the drive unit. Not sure i can post a pic on here, or if I should without his permission. I asked him for more pics of the machine. We'll see what happens. One thing he did was make the toggles out of thin material (maybe 1/8" plate?), and used some simple material...maybe plastic for bushings instead of sealed bearings like I did.

      I've got plans to build them, along with pics and instructions. I don't make them to sell....I'm too old...LOL They do require access to machine tools, like a lathe and mill....or, if your real handy, you might get by with just a drill press. I charge $40 for the plans. You can pay me through PayPal, and I'll email the plans in PDF format, or I can send the raw CAD files, which is more workable, if you can read .dwg files. CAD readers are available free online. I've had no complaints about the PDF version, however. My PayPal ID is 'jrnelson_536@q.com' Thanks

    Would a vibrating table work just as well as a sliding table?

    • @jimnelson7740
      @jimnelson7740  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately, no. The shaker table has an action that moves faster in one direction than the other. That's what makes the heavies go up the slope towards the cons end, while the lighter material gets washed down the cross slope into the waste troughs.

    • @TheSummersProject
      @TheSummersProject 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim Nelson thanks Jim... Curious about the blue bowl too.... is that just as effective as the shaker table?

    • @jimnelson7740
      @jimnelson7740  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheSummersProject Actually, they are two different tools for two different jobs. The Blue Bowl does well with really fine gold, whereas shaker tables do best with a bit larger gold. Shaker tables don't do really well with flour gold. I've often thought about, and still intend to build a small wave table, which would probably combine the best attributes of both. I think for a small scale miner, like most of us, a small wave table would be the best setup.

    • @TheSummersProject
      @TheSummersProject 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim Nelson thanks for the response. 😃 So, I’m getting into e waste... Lots of boards etc and about to grind them down. If I get them down to a fine powder, I’m assuming that’s what you mean by flour gold, just so I’m clear, for the finer stuff like the flour, I’m better with a wave table? If so, are they easy to build? Expensive to buy?

    • @jimnelson7740
      @jimnelson7740  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheSummersProject Somebody was selling small models on EBay a couple of years ago. I haven't looked for one recently, so don't know if they're still available. They're fairly easy to build, except for the drive unit. That part, if done correctly, requires some machining skill and tools. You can see mine on my channel. The same unit will drive either a wave table, or shaker table. I'll try and find the video of the one the guy was making and selling on EBay. I think he was charging in the neighborhood of $1,500.

    • @jimnelson7740
      @jimnelson7740  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. I did build one for the Wilfley Lab table I rebuilt a couple of years ago, but didn't make one specifically for the drive unit I built. Sorta lost interest in the whole thing, and moved on to other prospecting designs. I have a new dry sluice, which works really well, even on flour gold from the Snake, but I'm not releasing any info on it, until I get the patent application filed. Thanks

    Couldn't you just have used a motor speed controller. Awesome build

    • @jimnelson7740
      @jimnelson7740  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comments, Vince. You can't use a speed control with a single-phase A/C motor. You can with DC motors, but DC motors are spendy, unless you find one from a treadmill or other use, and then the max speed is really high...like 5,000 rpm. Hard to control that down to about 300.
