Strabismus to Stereopsis
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 21 ต.ค. 2020
Welcome to Strabismus to Stereopsis! My name is Melissa Daniels and I am here to open a dialogue about strabismus and all the fun that goes with it.
I was born with strabismus and I have had 4 strabismus surgeries, patched for a total of 7 years, worn prism glasses for 10 years total, done vision therapy for 2 years and tried all sorts of solutions in between.
If there is a program, therapy, or product out there for strabismus, you can bet that I have tried it. Some have been AMAZING, others a total waste of time and money.
I'm creating this channel to educate the world about what I'm learning to save you a ton of time and resources.
And when your journey gets hard and you feel alone and like nobody understands what it's like to live with strabismus, I'm here to support you and give you the boost you need to keep going!

3D Anaglyph Glasses: RED/BLUE vs RED/GREEN and how they work for Strabismus
Hi dear Melissa, l had multiple surgeries but non of them worked. Unfortunately there is no vision therapy center in the area l live , so l m gonna do eye excercises at home. I'm so thankful for all experiences you have shared with us. I'll inform you with the results. Hope this works. Lots of love ❤
When going through VT, sometimes I would try to see "big" while driving and it would be WAY too overwhelming. I definitely had to give it time.
Thanks Melissa. I was diagnosed with alternating esotropia in 2016 at age 56 after my brain gave up and my eye turn didn't go away. I had strabismus surgery in Wichita, Kan. It was a success. I am now 64 and have had occasional issues, usually if driving and trying to watch sporting events from a distance. Stress and fatigue combined with driving or watching a sporting event is a bad combination. I now live in Kansas City and recently had an exam with an ophthalmologist. He said my eyes are still working together, which I was glad to hear. He told me I could get prism glasses made to better deal with driving and viewing distance sports events. I would wear them over my contacts. 5 diopters. What do you think about this? I am diligent with daily eye exercises, several of which you have showed us. I believe they have helped. Thanks again for your work. Tim H.
I tried the circle excersize for the first time yesterday. Very difficult. I noticed that I tend to Focus on the top of the rope. I see double edges and shadows when trying to get stereoptisis. I am not sure I was doing this right. Maybe I need to open up the whole rope. Not sure how to do that yet. I get to try again on Monday. Also asked to rock side to side to see if the rope changes shape. It looks more like the rope is changing position but it is still a circle. Did I misunderstand the task?
Great advise, as usual! Thanks for all your help and wisdom!❤️
Thanks for the advice, I was born with strabismus tried few exercises didn't work looking forward surgery
Holy shit just jump to 7:30
I hate it! They laugh at me and say I’m scary
Thank you so much for sharing! You’ve encouraged me to keep praying to God about my own strabismus journey in a time of uncertainty
So interesting! My 8 yo son has eso and he is constantly getting lost in up-close projects like drawing, Lego etc. He says he doesn’t want to play outside, he just likes doing indoor activities. Despite this I’m encouraging him to join some sports next year in the hope it will help his visual system. I’d love to know your thoughts on contact lenses. We are looking at transitioning from bifocal glasses to bifocal contacts in the hope that it will open up his peripheral vision more and help with the eye wanting to turn in.
I'm from Algeria This is axactly what's happening to me can you help me, please !?
My eyes get out when I look at further distance what would help me in this case
How do you get a referral for this type of therapy? I've never had an optometrist mention this was a possibility. The only optometrist who ever mentioned anything said only surgery as a child would have helped it.
Can adjustable sutures cause a muscle slip? It’s my biggest fear. I would want my surgeon to secure that muscle, and not leave anything ‘undone’
Jeffy sister
I have exo. However, I enjoyed watching your video and sort of took your information and applied it to my situation. So, instead of broadening, it would be focusing. I hope to try VT someday as well. Is it possible to gain 100% control at all times with VT alone? Thank you!
100% control is a big ask! I think it is possible for sure, but I only think that improvements can be guaranteed, not 100% usually. Exotropia isn't an exact opposite. The focus need to be seeing big and central simultaneously, not just a focus on central details. Peripheral is just as important for exotropia!
How😮😢
Please how do I fix my lazy eye
Why would I pay $6k or whatever for vision therapy when I can do it on my own for 5% of the cost?
I totally get that! I tried to do it on my own but I wasn't successful. For complex diagnosis the use of prisms and lenses and in-office support is so important!
That's my ex I broke up with because she was seeing someone on the side
How do I sign up I’d love to talk to u I’m on the fence with getting this surgery I have never had the surgery and I’ve been dealing with this for 50 years my eyes are turning out 30 diopters . I’m scared petrified to get the surgery I need someone to talk to about this
You can schedule a call on zoom at app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule.php?owner=24182829
I have extreme exotropia 30° central vitreous de and blood into the eye three of the opthalmologists have confirmed this and they say I am late for the required treatment and I was not born like this i was three years of age when my parents neglected me and my eye condition got worse they still don't care literally I think I would not be able to afford treatment being a student or operation in the upcoming years I am 16 now and can see best from one and only see colours( sharpness no rough edges cannot be seen only mild colours on focusing)from the other this channel has really gave me hope and I have promised my self that i will remain hopeful that one day I will be able to concentrate on a single thing I assume that it will be very nice or delightful to make eye contact, to see a single thing at once or see from both eyes clearly the worst part is that the blood and pain is increasing on a continuous rate when I was a child it was very rare but it's increasing I feel it daily but still if I will be rich at 50 age then I will get the operation no matter what the doctor says I am and will be hopeful.
Just focus on staying healthy and treating your situation. I understand money is an issue for treatment, I suggest the simple exercises taught on here.
I love that you are future focused. None of us can control how our parents did or did not get our strabismus fixed at a young age. Most parents don't know what is best. We can only control the steps we take moving forward!
I personally found the apperture rule helpful. I felt like it targeted my need to relax focus rather than moving eye out.
That's awesome, I really struggle with that exercises myself, but it would probably be so good for me.
Oh my goodness I have exotropia and I have bad concentration but I'm very good at the big picture
That is so interesting! It amazes me how personalities help form vision habits and vision habits help form personality!
Thank you for sharing your story and expressing your faith in God through our savior, Jesus Christ. NEVER feel scared about sharing your belief. Share and rejoice in shaking off the damned weight of non-believers. Yes, we keep our faith in God, and we pray for the doctor. You mentioned so many good points when living with strabismus. God will make a way when it's His will. Thanks again for the share!
Love this, thank you!
Maam I'm from Srilanka. Last month my 5years old son has faced to squint surgery on left side. That eye is now straight but after few weeks right side of eye is not straight. Doctor has gave me some excercises to do.I want to know is this normal thing or not
It is normal. About 30% of surgeries do not result in straight eyes, unfortunately. The exercises should help train his brain to use both eyes.
What if you have exotropia in both eyes
That is normal. Same things apply.
What’s the point in having vision therapy if you also need to have surgery.
Great question! The surgery doesn't teach the brain to use the eyes together so many times the eyes will return to their original position after a year or two. The vision therapy teaches the brain to use both eyes which is what holds them straight, long term.
@ But what’s the point in having the two procedures if only one of them works.
They made surgery for my right eye, and operation was successful. Thank you for your support
Congrats!
Very great info!
Glad it was helpful!
everytime i talk to ppl with squinted eyes I dont know where the hell to look at xDDD
Awesome, thanks
Thank you
Hey! Please can I ask, would the occulus 3 be suitable for kids? Are there any VR sets suitable for 5 year olds? Thanks
Definitely. There are great parental controls available and the headset is straightforward and lightweight. My 6 year old loves mine! I usually will cast it to my phone to help give verbal guidance.
Brilliant information
Glad it was helpful!
This is somewhat related . . . I just bought a physical activity game/exercise called Boxbollen, which might be great for vision therapy. It's around $25.
What is the name of the punching game?
Optics Trainer
What is your best advice on Diplopia? Seems the surgery I had was similar as to what you have described; but I wasn’t given any resources for vision therapy. And my double vision is definitely better, but not gone. Thank you for all the info you provide!!! P.s. It’s been just over 4 weeks since my surgery.
The best advice is to find a place where you can see single and then expand from there.
@ Thank you!!! 💗
Very helpful.
Thank you!
I sent a request thru your website to get some recommendations on Vision Therapy clinics in LA.
How old are you?
thanks for sharing this. i think this was relevant regardless of the viewer's opinions on religion. i think all of your insights definitely have place in this discussion.
I agree, thank you for the support!
Why do I see 5 pinkies
Hi. I had surgery yesterday for my lazy eye, so I had a strabismus operation. Everything went well, and I have no pain. Today, my bandage was removed, and to my surprise, my eye is now slightly turned inward. My doctor said there is swelling inside the eye, so after a few weeks, my eye should straighten out more. But I'm really worried that it won’t. Do you have any knowledge or experience with this? Best regards, Mikkel from Denmark :)
Please tell me is it okay now or still inward
Madem surgery how much money madem
Usually about $8,000-$10,000, but insurance usually covers it.
'Vision therapy isn't cheap.'--ain't that the truth. However, I'm hopeful that accessibility to vision therapy is improving at a rapid clip thanks to advances in new technologies (VR-based vision therapy, for example). I haven't fused yet, but I've already noticed massive improvement in my double vision, and reading speed (I've probably doubled or tripled my reading speed, thanks to Josh's Optics Trainer software.'. I'm hoping to fuse soon--perhaps in as soon as a few months).
Great interview. Sounds like the system put you through the ringer, Caryn. But you persevered. You're a great example of being one's own advocate. 'Oh, you can't help me? That's okay, I'll find someone who can.'. Inspiring!
hello, do you offer consultation over a video call? because i live in turkey so i can't do a face to face visit.
I was scared thinking it wouldn't get better until I saw this video :) It really does get better as time goes by, thank you!
