Phenomenology of the Phenomenon with Michael Miley
Kimberly Engels interviews Michael Miley, former journalist for UFO Magazine who has also had his own transpersonal experiences with the phenomenon. In the 1980s and 90s, Michael investigated close encounters reports as an investigative journalist, including the cases of noted researchers like Budd Hopkins and John Mack. Together they discuss the "noise" and challenges he encountered when trying to find reliable information about the phenomenon, what made some accounts more credible than others, and how phenomenology can serve as a useful investigative tool for examining eyewitness testimony and reducing the noise in the dataset. He also discusses the pros and cons of testimony retrieved under hypnosis, and what some of the research suggests about the credibility of such testimony.

This was a thoughtful, careful discussion of a challenging issue: well done to both discussants. That said, I wondered if the distinction between 'umwelt' and 'uber-umwelt' was not always handled with the utmost rigour through the course of the conversation--which is to say that sometimes the concepts appeared to bleed into each other. As I understand them, 'umwelt' and 'uber-umwelt' are non-intersecting, incommensurable spheres: the 'umwelt' is that combination of active and passive synthesis by which a meaningful 'world' (or 'environment') is construed by an organism, as the (sensory) manifold is organized according to its unique categories, schemata, &c. The 'uber-umwelt,' by contrast, is in the family of Kant's 'noumenal' sphere: it can be formally posited or transcendentally deduced--but of its determinate content, one must pass over in silence. As Spinoza said, even before Kant: "If they say that there are infinitely many things which we cannot perceive, I reply that we cannot reach them by any thought" (Ethics, ed. Curley, IIP49S). Hence the example of the tick: its 'umwelt' is construed (on this model) on the threefold sensory-perceptual bases of surface tension, heat, and butyric acid. All other sensory-perceptual elements fall under into 'uber-umwelt'--to which it is, by definition, agnostic: a tick is blind to colour, and cannot even conceive of it. A 'hyperobject' is what one might call a 'dual-citizenship entity': for any given organism, part of the object is phenomenal to the 'umwelt,' while other part(s) of the object are concealed in its 'uber-umwelt.' (The usage is obviously from that coined by Timothy Morton, but there are obvious points of contact). Here the question is how many objects are hyperobjects (presumably all), what proportion of their residence is in the field of an organism's 'umwelt' (disclosure) and what proportion in its 'uber-umwelt' (concealment), and how one would know. But these questions too, it appears, are consigned to skepticism or agnosticism. This feature is a double-edged sword: the 'uber-umwelt' (and the UUTH) cannot be falsified (unlike the ETH, as noted), but nor can it be verified. I therefore query those parts of the discussion that seemed to suggest that certain domains of manifold, or their phenomena, cross from 'uber-umwelt' into 'umwelt.' To these, I wish to say: the 'uber-umwelt' is excluded, by definition. If it is possible for certain phenomena (appearances) to exist in a liminal or marginal space in an organism's 'umwelt,' this fact might indeed account for UAPs and other paranormal experiences--but this would then be an occurrence as old as consciousness itself, and does not explain the relatively new UFO/UAP scenario, unless one invokes human techno-scientific provocations in the ether &/or the extensions of the human sensory apparatus by way of advances in instrumental science, as discussed--as well as various anthropological, psychological, and sociological factors. These latter considerations obviously allow for the same hyperobject to appear in different ways over time, as also discussed--now as a religious saint, now as a satyr, now as an alien or UFO. It seems to me that the relative uniqueness and rarity of these sensory-perceptual events might make better neuropsychological sense of their paranormal character, than their ostensibly liminal 'umwelt'/'uber-umwelt' status--i.e., experiences for which the human mind (whether individually or collectively) lacks a coherent perceptual-conceptual framework. Unfortunately, this explanation would also render them forever difficult to study rigorously--unless there are subjective or objective factors which might make them more frequent, more perspicuous, or of a clearer or different phenomenal character (open possibilities, in my opinion). I'd be interested to hear your comments. Thank you-- Cameron

Enjoyed that. I had a ufo experience of my own in March and find many parallels in this discussion. What shocked me most was this 38:30 - the overtly biblical nature of the symbolism. I'm not at all religious! There was a purpose to the encounter, insights gained, a healing that followed. I suspect that what I encountered was another part, future part of higher part, of my own consciousness. But whatever, it was a very kind intervention, and I am very grateful.

One has to be very open minded to this subject, I delved into this phenomena 5 years ago and was fascinated by it, at first it was the nuts n bolts and then it becomes more conscious related more spiritual, science now suggests the universe is conscious and humans have that ability to connect if we practice meditation. It then fired 5 visible beams , which altered the warheads trajectory before "disappearing". That's a clear sign that NHI (or a faction of them) have a high probability of ACTING to preserve the habitability of their "domain". As to why they don't inhabit other planets, maybe they do and we are not aware either based on limitations of our detection methods, limitations of open source data (classified national security information), and low observability of the phenomenon

A large amount over 70+ years of evidence pointing to interstellar species visiting this planet, and this "blue sky" thinker just dismisses all that to chase a prior Earth civilisation without any real evidence. The current whistle-blowers are those people working on non-human biologics and technology, on UAP craft the which are tracked coming in and out of our atmosphere by NORAD. We should be discussing that. Actual facts and eyewitness descriptions which demonstrate characteristics of interstellar craft as many reseachers have agreed. He is pushing a hypothesis which even he says there is "no positive evidence". Whereas, there are beings which even they themselves tell us they are from other star systems! I'm sorry I cannot waste my time on this guys lack of understanding of all the historical cases and the various non-human species which are visiting this planet. Great presentation and discussion. While there were many points of contention, one thing is clear: there's no evidence that human capacity for conceptual thinking was dormant for 150,000 years. This is pure speculation based on a lack of archaeological evidence. As we all (should) know, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. The further back we go, the less likely it is that such evidence would have survived erosion and geological events. Plus, conceptual thinking and language don't necessarily leave any reliably identifiable physical evidence in the first place.

This is a common occurrence. When people step outside their area of expertise, they often end up sharing biased opinions. This applies to everyone. The difference with academics is that they usually have a high opinion of their understanding of subjects outside their field. In other words, their confirmation bias tends to be stronger in these areas (this isn't just my opinion; it's supported by multiple peer-reviewed studies).

He only made one geopolitical comment which was at 108:40 - “What would happen if a crazy somewhere in Russia decided to fire nukes“? I don’t think this remark makes him look absolutely dumb and simplistic! I think your remark makes you look ADS. If I thought like you, I wouldn’t listen to him anymore!
