BMW E34 5-Series Fuel Tank Straps - 525i / 535i / 540i / M5
มุมมอง 527ปีที่แล้ว
A short video that shows how the fuel tank in the E34 5-series is strapped to the car. With the cars getting older, these straps are often rusting out and causing gas tanks to fall, so it is good to inspect them and to be prepared to replace them. The strap design should be the same for all E34 5-series models which include the 525i, 535i, 530i, 540i and M5.

will this work on a 1995 540i E34?
Yes
I haven't been able to open my passenger door in over a year. Thanks for sharing.
Hopefully it helps. If it does I’d appreciate some feedback/letting me know how it went. Thanks
Thanks Trevors38 I have the same issue and this will be a huge help. You say removing the door handle is easy. My other research is giving it PITA rating and talk of specialist BMW tools. Could you share how you removed it please?
Sorry for the late reply. I typically work on the older cars but the method for removing the Z4 exterior handle is roughly the same. There is a plug on the rear side of the door that you need to remove that will give you access to the brass slider that hold the exterior handle to the door. This brass slider (IIRC) needs to be pushed forward towards the front of the car and you will be able to slide the exterior door handle out. It is actually very simple once you see how it works. This is a video from my older 5 series but the system is essentially the same. Start watching at about the 3:20 mark and you should get a rough idea of what you need to do. th-cam.com/video/z7th4RUol74/w-d-xo.html Getting the door panel off and messing with the locking mechanisms inside the door, and swapping out the bowden cable can be a real pain. The exterior door handle is not.
@TrevorS38 Thanks a million for all this info.
@@GaryBrown-ny7sl Now worries, let me know how it goes. Would be cool to know that the video helped somebody figure this out.
I was old enough to have seen and own these W126 (300 SE & 420 SEL) when they were new and pre-owned with pristine condition at couple Mercedes dealerships Great solid cars.
Yeah I’m still checking the local classifieds every week or two hoping to find a good one.
The mistress and Mrs found a 126 grey Mr 300SE and a 420 SEL this one is a gray Mr 7 series probably this is a 735 it is a 735 ill and it has the b35 3.5 l inline 6 it is the 735 ill that has equipped with a Mr interior this one is a 1989 gray Mr 300SE probably this has the m103 3.0 l inline 6
Very cool. I've got this issue and I'll be checking that out now first.
Thanks, hopefully it saves people some time.
What happened? Did you ever fix it or part it out ?
I worked for a few days trying to fix the transmission issues and when I went to put it back together the ECU would no longer communicate with the trans. Worked on it some more and couldn’t figure it out. In the end I had to part it. Should make a video explaining why I think the cars are cool but not as DIY as the earlier generations.
@@TrevorS38I think you could have got it working honestly and or changed the transmission completely but I understand why you gave up they are a pain to troubleshoot
This is a good video
holy crap that's easy. I thought the rad would have to come out and i for one could not be fucked draining and buying more coolant. what a delightful video
Thanks, glad it helped.
These arent worth much just headlights and taillights on these. Jf you find fhe XJS sc those have money in the tops
Thanks I’ll keep an eye out.
Thanks for posting this! Having a similar problem in my 04 Z4 but only have issues when it’s in direct sunlight on a hot day.
Glad you found it. I came across the sunlight variable a lot and it makes more sense to me that the door handle metal/plastic is heating up and making the teeth more malleable. Either way I’d suggest you remove the handle (easy to do) and inspect the teeth before buying any parts.
Good honest video thanks ehhhh
Thanks man
Did you find the fanny pack in the junkyard also?
No, eBay special. But it’s part of my junkyard uniform now.
I need black interior how much
Sorry but I did not pull anything from this car and most of the interior was already gone.
that zhp at the beginning is a huge find

The whole car
Well yeah, but it’s at a junkyard so what parts should I pull?
There's nothing, it's an automatic. You might help someone out with a clean body panel but what's it worth to ship nowadays?
Hit me up I am in need of some parts
What do you need?
@@TrevorS38 I have motor and trans - got from trade Need ecu and ets harness to run in another vehivle
Nothing but junk, right where it belongs 😂😂😂
I paid 60 for a headlight, fuq LKQ day charge $3 to enter,if your part is not there and you have to go to another LKQ locations, you still have to pay,so fuq LKQ,greedy fuqs
Yeah I just left one of their locations. They tried to charge me $107 for an old head unit and HVAC control panel. The parts are cheaper on eBay. I’d rather pay some small time dismantler and not have to drive to a junkyard and pull it myself.
Even scrap yards all got bought up and turned into big business profit machines 😂 ain’t nothing left
That thing is being held up with hopes and dreams
I'm sorry those cars are absolute junk unless u have an affinity for them
Have you ever owned one? Not doubting but curious.
@@TrevorS38 no
Yes it is worth your time to fix that car up My dad had one when I was growing up and he sold it for $46,000 That's before current day market prices and interest hikes and all that extra crap I don't know how much it would be worth this day and age but back in '05 it was worth a lot I would do some research but keep the great work on your channel
Which model did he have? V12?
oh yeah bro , thats an absolute beauty, id say that one right there that your next to is all your gonna need to make your penny pretty
Do you know what parts from it might be valuable, though? Stuff that is rare or that people often need spares of?
Anytime i see one, theyre in someones back yard. Doesnt seem like a reliable car :/
Yeah that’s my impression, too. Look great but likely not well engineered.
The i6 ones are good but the v12s are a little trouble if you don't maintain them properly

You sure? Said 2JZ-GE I think on the top of the block or valve cover.
They want $30 for one tail light assembly. But they only want 200 for a complete axle assembly, with rotors and hubs. Its ridiculous.
Salvage yards are getting more and more out of hand as the years go buy. Here in California we have "pick and pulls". They're outrageous when it comes to pricing. Almost not worth going anymore.
Yeah I was out in California for a few years. I think Sun Valley is the largest hub of scrap yards in the world. But yeah, prices are getting nuts. The bigger yards like Pick N Pull that have standardized prices aren’t worth going to nearly as much as they used to be. I pulled outer headlight, inner headlight and an amp from this car and laughed when they read out the prices at the counter. Left them there and walked out.
@@TrevorS38 I've been in the same situation before. I spent almost 45min pulling out an aftermarket trans cooler for one of my jeeps. Got up to the counter and they said $45. My jaw just dropped. For a fucking piece of aluminum! When I told them never mind I don't want it. They told me to just put it in the scrap pile. They would rather get 20 cents for it then charge a decent price and make people want to come back. I've had it with them. I'm not proud of it, but if it fits in my tool bag, I'm not paying for it. They can kiss my ass.
@@paulortiz4854 Yeah I found a roof rack for a friend's truck and buying one new from Amazon was only a little more expensive than what the yard wanted to charge for a 20 year old one. It can be worth it if you're in a pinch of some stuff is really expensive from the dealer, but it's getting harder and harder to find stuff that you can turn around and sell online for a decent profit.
@@paulortiz4854yes sir
They had a gas leak claim( something like that they were prone to catch fire ), probably wasn't fixed soon enough
Would this have likely been the 335i/N54?
@@TrevorS38most likely an n54 or n55 they blow up all the time based on the wheels I’d say this was tuned and couldn’t handle it
@@don_huzan Are you able to ID the wheels?
@@don_huzanblow up all the time??? 🤣 Definitely does not
@@slitherdurant Alright it was an exaggeration for sure but we know that they have problems with boost if it isn’t built properly

The good parts, at least.
Cool.. I remember being a teenager in late 90s, and the junkyards were filled with 60s chargers, mustangs, Camaros ect, and no one cared.. So many went to the crusher.. Cash for clunkers did a number on classics too. I miss the 80s man.
Yeah, all of the 80s and early 90s BMWs and Mercedes that I love are becoming more and more rare. It’s a bummer.
"promo sm"
What?
Cant this test be performed while engine of? Also hand break light staying on ones down dims but steel on any idea? Cheers
I think the engine self test only works when the engine has been turned on. You can vacuum test the actuator by hand, but then you won't be sure that the computer and solenoid are working properly. I don't know about the handbrake. Probably a damaged switch? Likely common to all E34s, not just M5s so I would go to bimmerforums.com in the E34 section and browse or post there.
@@TrevorS38 cheers thanks
Rear door the same procedure to remove the chrome trim? Except no mirror to remove
Yes
I feel the new ICE car price will only go up for the rest of time, and EV will take over the market share. It's really cool if we can put all these old cars together and use up all their lives. It's good for the environment. I will probably do this for my rest of life. Currently buying post 2000 German high end cars.
Only post 2000? You're missing lots of excellent 80-90s cars that are already appreciating.
I think it's still less risky to buy cheap cars to fix. I sold a few project cars in the past few years, some bought pre-COVID, one from a friend's throw away car recently. They can be sold as long as it works. All made 1~3k from each one of them, mostly labor cost. This way you will never lose money.
Not sure if it's easy to sell like this. As the used car price is so high right now, it's hard to flip cars too. I am also willing to fix car to sell, but it's hard to find cheap cars to make decent profits.
This is a good idea! When new car price is so high and EV is coming, most of current ICE car owners will just keep fixing current cars. And this is environment friendly work.
Perfect video
Thanks, hope it helped.
great video bro. thanks
Glad you liked it
Thanks for this. This was one of the most useful videos on this subject. It's still a real struggle if nobody has done it in 30 years, but it makes a big difference. Right now, the last one of the four won't fully slide into the locked position 😤
