  • After experiencing a loss of power in my 1991 BMW M5, I tinker with the intake resonance flap and find that the vacuum actuator has failed.

More people have watched this video than I would have expected - not many E34 M5s out there. Has anyone bought and used the actuator from Angry Ass Solutions yet? If so I'd be curious to hear your impressions.

@@ALKUKES The vacuum line I touch with my thumb at 1:12 goes down to the flap solenoid that is mounted underneath the air accumulator. Not sure exactly what you're getting at for the second question.

@@ALKUKES I’d suggest heading over to M5Board.com, going to the E34 subsection and starting a new thread with as many details as possible.

I bought the angry ass solutions vacuum actuator for my brothers m5. I also did the vacuum silicone hose kit from hpsi. The actuator is not really working, I'm wondering if I have to change those other vacuum solenoids... Also the car has always been knocking even after it got rebuilt with forged Pistons, balanced and blueprinted

I would head over to M5Board and make a post in the E34 section.

Thank you for posting this video. My M5 was also down on power, changed all obvious parts such as spark plugs, wires, fuel filter but no change. Luckily came across your video and sure enough this was the problem. Again thanks for the video it helped me out and now the engine feels great.

Glad that you were able to put this use. Was it the vacuum actuator that had failed or another part of the resonance flap system?

@@TrevorS38 I got lucky, I applied White Lithium grease to the spring and mechanism of resonance flap and a little to the vacuum actuator shaft and that did the trick.
At the start up, the shaft would move slightly but not enough to operate the the flap. I removed the vacuum actuator and was able to operate it easily by creating vacuumed by mouth so thought maybe the flap is stuck and applied the grease. And sure enough at the start up the shaft was opening the flap and now the car feels great and the power has returned 😀
Again thanks for posting this video, greatly appreciated 🙏

I think the engine self test only works when the engine has been turned on. You can vacuum test the actuator by hand, but then you won't be sure that the computer and solenoid are working properly. I don't know about the handbrake. Probably a damaged switch? Likely common to all E34s, not just M5s so I would go to bimmerforums.com in the E34 section and browse or post there.
