What NO ONE Tells You About the Grind in Fighting Games
Are you caught in the trap of self-criticism? This lie is holding you back from true progress.
Next video you should watch: th-cam.com/video/uaTdHUJ_5fg/w-d-xo.html
You've been told to keep the grind, but the truth is, that's not what you need to level up. This lie is holding you back from true progress.
This video dives deep into how constantly hitting the grind and being self-critical is actually a lie that holds you back in fighting games. Everyone says to push harder, but that's not the way to grow. The toxic culture of the FGC, the relentless comparison, and the harsh self-criticism are stopping you from truly feeling good about your progress. If you think that getting stronger will make you feel fulfilled later on, you're wrong. I'll show you why self-compassion, not a war against yourself, is the key to improving at fighting games and feeling satisfied in your journey. You are enough right now, and you don't need to earn the right to feel good about your growth.

    Talking about how being hard on yourself poisons any achievement you get is spot on. I'd go so far as to say association and conditioning is THE biggest aspect of self-improvement. If being hard on yourself leads to a positive outcome, you will come to associate that feeling with reward. What happens, though, is you're now conditioned that much more to continue to adopt that mindset because that's what worked for your goal. It eventually saps any happiness you can get because you almost physically can't comprehend a positive mental attitude with accomplishment

      Exactly it. And that’s why it’s so hard to break because it gets reinforced often enough that you keep doing it. But once you get used to the other way, you find it will be more efficient and faster

    This is a lesson I’ve been trying to instill in myself my whole fgc journey. What really got it to set in was shifting my definition of being good at it to mean knowing what I’m doing instead of being better than my opponent. I’m still trash but now I play to test myself and see my progress and it makes realizing I still have things to learn so EXCITING

    I think it actually starts with character selection for a lot of people. I think a lot of people follow tier charts or beginner guides to pick a main but Fighters aren't like moba's and I think it's important to enjoy the mechanics/looks/feel of what you're physically doing. Having fun while you're training and having matches changes how you see the grind. I still think it's good to pay attention to what's strong at a "high level" it will be easier to switch when you have a solid foundation.

    This is actually good advice but I have massive ego issues so I felt compelled to grind ranks (and now I'm stuck because I'm playing against every tekken god's pocket Heihashi when I play an alt but that's a different problem), even though it's a flawed system that don't mean much. And as a consequence I can barely find any fun in the game at all except when I play against a friend. It takes extreme self control for me to play with a mindset of improving myself. But if I fail so much as a sidestep and get punished for it, I feel like I suck, I become absolutely toxic and the main reason I don't break my hardware is because I'm too poor to buy it back if I did. My absolute lack of patience makes me my own worst matchup... gotta work on that. Even winning just makes me feel like I got more lucky than the opponent on 50/50's and abusing matchup knowledge.

    There was a really good Polygon video about beginners picking up fighting games and a section about how players should not just see themselves as win rates. Max Dood reacted to it and also added that people shouldn't feel worse when they lose because there is still a benefit to learning in losses, probably even more so. And also how the archaic nature of many fighting games should incentivise their players more instead of zero sum punishing players who are just learning their games and how players today are still hard pressed into thinking it should be this pointless and painful when in reality people just didn't have QoL back in the day that are generally positives now. Anyway, this is a FANTASTIC video! As much as I love pro tip videos and the like, having more people talk about the holistic nature of the beast is a much needed thing and highly appreciated 🙏

      @TrickyEileen no as of right now even with a 4 winstreak in purple rank I'm still getting the same amount of elo gain. It also doesn't really make sense to have the + or - 3 because if you're in purple, you will 100% be fighting blue ranks on their secondary's.

    • @throughsteak6256
      @throughsteak6256 วันที่ผ่านมา

      So even though you are fighting a "purple rank" you are actually fighting a blue rank that has the skill and knowledge of frame data sidesteping etc so in reality, even if you change it to +or- 2 it doesn't stop a kishin from going on secondary and bypassing the system entirely

    It's so interesting to me how fighting game meta talk will often bring in this strong element of self-improvement and things that even sound a bit like mindfulness at times but it totally makes sense as I've gotten deeper into various games. We play the games to feel good, and we feel good when we win, right? Sure, but I think tangible improvements are what are really thrilling, and tying this to our self-worth is obviously dangerous, especially when expectations of how long something should take don't meet reality. Also I think the facts that our cultures thrive on stories/narratives/legends with discernible arcs and climaxes, and that our sense of time can be really distorted by our emotions, both help to occlude the simplicity of patient, continual growth day-by-day, while continuing to treat ourselves right and not neglect other areas of our life. We all suppress and oppress ourselves in all kinds of stupid ways that we sometimes don't even question, in all areas of our life that we let slide, but I think we start noticing we have to make a change pretty quick when this mentality affects our source of fun. Anyway great talk, sorry for the essay.

    • @TrickyEileen
      @TrickyEileen 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes the mindfulness stuff and self improvement. I think it has to do with the martial arts. We are martial artists but within the context of video games. So a lot of the philosophy of fighting pops up. I have always thought if my fighting style as ‘zen fighter’. Tho I only really activate it when I’m locking in or in a tournament set. Complete utter focus on the present moment.

    I understand what my peers have been telling me now, thank you for this video <3 I really do need to be kinder to myself. Been practicing it recently and it's difficult, but I know that it's possible, one step at a time, chronic depression be damned.

    I've never seen your content before, and i have to say, you give one hell of a motivational speech. Thanks so much. Outside of 3 games, I'm not great at fighting games, but i love playing them none the less. It can get frustrating getting destroyed sometimes, but I'm having more than enough fun to keep coming back. I'm generally good against friends, but online, not so much lol. Edit: just wanted to let you know that i subbed to you. Looking forward to seeing more of your perspective on fighting games.

    I've had to revisit this a few times since the Twitch stream and it's starting to pay off. You're always such a help. So glad I found your channel.

      I’m glad I have the vods for people. I might actually start linking the full vods for people to find easily who want the full discussion. I cut a lot of the random moments and like 15 sec pauses between words at times. I had to really think that long between words sometimes.

    Amazing video. I have defo been in negative headspaces when it comes to this game feeling like if I'm not winning or can't maintain GoD then I'm trash. But gladly I've not felt like that for a good while. This video defo reminds me that I'm going about things the right way now and I just have to notice fast enough and stop if I slip back. Also I really love this bit 11:03 cause this is super actionable advice. Even noticing something that you should do (let's say a move you newly learned is punishable) but failing to execute the punish is a positive thing in that you've started the process of being able to respond correctly to a situation.

      Yes the noticing comes first. Instead of punishing itself, celebrate you now know to punish and will get it in time

    I remember when I realized that taking a break (even a long break) made me stronger it felt like a magic trick. Just so unintuitive based on the grinding mindset I grew up with

      Same. Grinding mindlessly might have worked in the past, but it’s unsustainable

    If you grind a game to feel better you should stop - playing the game should make you feel good. Getting better is a sideeffect of having fun and learn more about the game

      Emotionally feel better is fine. Feeling better about yourself as a person, ya that’s a red flag 🚩

      @@TrickyEileen I understand grind to be playing the game while you are mostly raging and not enjoying it. It really helps you getting better (at the game) if you humble yourself and learn to enjoy losing, like in seeing it as learning oppertunity - even if it's hard after getting mowed down by 10 yoshis and 10 howies in a row lmao
