The primary purpose of this channel is to just share videos of my boat building adventure. I don’t pretend to be an expert but I’ve played with wood working for many years, I love boating, and I’ve always wanted to combine the two. This is that story.
Of Freedom and Being Free
A tale of two freedoms, I guess. This one is dedicated to my dad, Korean War Vet Charles Henry. Because of people like him, we can pursue our dreams.

A Christening for Millie
มุมมอง 487ปีที่แล้ว
Millie is official. We christened her at a small gathering of some family and friends in Toledo Oregon and took her in the ocean at Yaquina Bay (Newport) for her first fishing adventure. She performs wonderfully - what a great boat. I expect many great adventures at the helm of Millie.

Great Alaskan Radar Pedestal

I decided my Great Alaskan need a good tall radar pedestal and I don’t want to spend $300 or so. So I built it myself!
Convertible Radar Mount

Here’s a little side trip to build a very custom item, a convertible radar platform for the top of the boat. It’s been in my head for a while and will allow me to get the boat into my shop storage without removing the radar.

Nice build, look forward to seeing it come along! Just a thought mind, although i have been working on yacht maintenance for several years, i have yet to build anything larger than a kayak, so i may be wrong here! But isn't the colision chamber there so as to provide a containment area behind the probable area of colision, so that in the event of a cracked hull, water will not flood the rest of the boat? I mention it as you have a drainage point at the bottom, which in that case could be counter productive? 😅
@@Danimorera65 Hello and thanks for watching! You are correct. The designer left some discretion to the builder. Some people will fill this chamber with pour-in foam or other flotation to add strength as well as prevent water intrusion. Some people use it for storage and just use really tight covers. Through condensation, though, it’s probable that water will get in there so the drain hole lets you get it out. You could seal the hole off with an expansion plug so it is still water tight but drainable. After a summer of good boating in some serious water, the front berth storage and collision chamber are bone dry.
Plywood panel boat sides are much more difficult than people think. They do it thinking its easier. Its not. They also think it's smoother. But it's harder to make professional looking than solid planking. Harder to do, harder to finish. Not even necessarily cheaper once you add in the fiberglass and epoxy. Maybe faster, maybe not once all the fiberglassing is done. Strip planking is slower but glued carvel is not.
@@paulbriggs3072 thanks for the comment! I’ve never done those other techniques. We have a lot of welded aluminum boats out here and many people thing mine is a metal boat, so I’m pleased with the way it turned out. It’s probably as much a composite hull as a plywood hull. 100 gallons of epoxy and a lot of glass cloth makes for a strong and light hull that works very well. I was in 5 foot swell yesterday and she just just runs so well and so efficiently. Not cheap or easy to build, but a fraction of the price of the alternatives.
Nice hat Randy!!!
@@petermathie9878 it’s a great hat!
Beautiful day to be offshore. I see Bia took the best seat on the boat and seems to enjoy boating. Enjoy your new boat and catch a bunch.
@@jamesyates5191 It’s been windy windy windy on the water so not much fishing. Now I’m trying to get Bia to use a turf pee pad. Not sure how that’s going to work out.
@@rhenryinoregon Well you could try to get her to pee on a blue pad outside and then put the peed on pad on the turf pad. Blue pads are disposable too.
Are yes the fruit of your labor, so sweet.
@@jamesboatbuild It’s such a fun boat. I do occasionally look around it while running and think “Holy heck, I built this! How’d I do that?”
Absolutely beautiful day!
@@johnbeckman8916 We need some more of those. Can’t get out!
Looks awesome and thanks for your Dad's service!
@@therestorationshop Thank you! I’ll pass it along.
Looks like some fun adventuring!!
@@markgallagher1376 it is. It sure has been windy here though. Not going out this week with another round of small craft advisories. I hope it calms down.
I see you’ve added a bow rail. Nice touch! Love your boat. Excellent build ❤️
@@eddiesmith6096 I got the bow rail as salvage from a Bell Buoy cabin cruiser that was dismantled for scrap. Bit of work getting it on but do like it. Thank you.
Great tip on the squeeze bottles. I was just trying to pour e-bond epoxy into little cups from the jugs. I spilled a bit. Is the ratio still 2:1 if you are doing it by weight?
It is still 2:1 on the scale. Ideally I’d have a 16 oz and an 8 oz bottle just so they run down about the same. I kind of kicked myself when I figured this out. It makes life much easier.
Looks great. You’re getting very close to the finish line. I’m sure when you decided to build this you had a general idea of how long it would take to build it and then the reality hit with all the small details that needed to be done.
Oh, I had an idea, I just tried not to dwell on it. 9 out of 10 days there’s no other place I’d rather be anyway, so it’s a win-win problem.
Nice boat! What's the fastest speed you could manage to squize from this boat and 200hp motor?
Hi! I can hit 38 mph with two people aboard. Plenty fast for me.
@@rhenryinoregon good to know, thanks! Trying to figure out how slow it's gonna be be with only 100-130hp

Beautiful boat! Congratulations
Yay! Glad to see you again, Randy! If the interior finishes up anywhere near as nice as the exterior ... wow!
Nice to be back! I kinda miss doing the videos. I’ll post a closeup of the cabinetry. It’s turning out nicely.
Loved the update. Thanks randy
It looks good. I spent at least $100 for some premade boat glides for a 17’ so you did well. It’s good that Bia made appearance as well. She looks great.
I’m hoping Bia like the boat as much as Wasco did. She’s unfazed by noise or motion so I’ll bet she does fine. Such a sweet dog, but a bit of a wimp with grumpy Josie.
@@rhenryinoregon Well she needs to respect her elders. I’m sure if you’re there she will be where you are. I’m glad she has become such a good buddy.
Such a rad build. I've decided to build a Tolman/Great Alaskan up here in Portland. Your channel has been a great source of ideas and inspiration.
Good luck! Drop by anytime if you want a tour.
@rhenryinoregon will definitely take you up on that. I ride my motorcycle through your area occasionally.
Very nice boat. Good job!
Thanks. I’m looking forward to another good year.
Beautiful boat . 👍What type of paint did you use ?
Thanks! I used Interlux Perfection products. If you’re careful with your preparation it comes out very nice. I think there’s a video on it. I rolled it on after some experimentation and was very pleased with the results.
Hey Randy. I can't remember if we had each others number or we contacted each other through TH-cam. One of these days I need to stop by and check your boat out. I'm getting ready to pull the plug on the plywood and stock up on material and get this project started finally.
Hello Travis. Email me at rhenryinoregon@google.com and we can set something up.
My first Brittany did the same thing. Way to Wasco.
Trying to get Bia to sing with me. Nothing yet.
Wow you are so brave. I thought a two man kayak was tricky at 21’. You needed a much bigger shop.
My wife might have a different adjective for it! But, it was a challenge. If my shop bay was any narrower I couldn’t have done it. Still, there was never a time when I was overwhelmed by it. Just a whole bunch of small projects in the end!
I’ve built two stitch and glue boats (two man kayak and pram) but that is amazing. Well done!
Great first season!! Awesome achievement and thanks for sharing!
Wonderful!!
Thanks! So rewarding but it’s nice to finally have a break to build other stuff.
Well Done!
Thank you! Fun build. Nice to have (most of) it behind me. Time to paint the house and do some yard work!
awesome. I love your boat.
Thanks so much!
Thanks for sharing Randy. Always enjoy your videos.
Thanks Jack. Good year. I’m starting to feel retired now.
Congratulations on a great season, 700 miles!? That’s awesome!! It has to be a proud moment to be out there with so many boats. Just knowing that you’ve built that boat with your hands and skills. She’ a beautiful vessel.
Oh heck! If I said hours I meant miles! I’ll go look. Thanks for the kind words. It’s been a great journey. Now I’ll be prepping for the Inside Passage in the spring. 700 miles each way. That will be an adventure!
Hi Randy, I have watched your videos from the beginning and I have really enjoyed following your journey. You truly have built a magnificent vessel. With regard to your "trailer scuffs", I would suggest when retrieving that you do not reverse you trailer quite so far into the water, so that when your boat comes up on the rollers, the aft end is not floating and this will eliminate the problem you were discussing - hope this makes sense?
That does make sense. If only I had rollers and not bunks! I have a friend with the same boat and he uses silicone on the bunks and cranks it up, so same concept. Thanks for the suggestion and the kind words.
My hull is similar The trailer has bunks but topped with plastic guides that allow the boat to ride up to the bow crank. my trailer is never more than half in water when retrieving the boat. Always cranking the last 3 feet up. works for me.
@@jamesboatbuild Yes, I think I’ll be adding the bunk slides next season. I’m also going to build the guides to keep the boat over the trailer while loading as more poor wife has to hold it steady while I pull forward. Thanks for the tip.
She's beautiful! Thank you for sharing and bringing us along for the ride!
Thanks for the wonderful compliment. I’m quite smitten with Millie. Today we went 36 miles into the ocean and caught tuna. Our first ever! Very fun and comfortable. Even the dogs like her.
LOVE to see you enjoying your boat Randy. Blood on the decks, perfect food for the belly and the soul. 🙂
Thanks! And today we got our first tuna ever. Only two, lost six in a snarl of broken lines, but what a blast!
Congratulations to you both! 👍🙋🙏
Thank you!
Awesome!!
Nice fatties! Silvers are great ... I love the cruising shots too ... looks like the boat runs pretty smooth!
I LOVE this boat. Super smooth. 50 miles on the ocean today and far less fatigued than I’d have thought. Tuna fishing tomorrow for the first time ever. Should be an adventure.
@@rhenryinoregon It's me, Randy ... Brian :) . I use Firth Mirth as a silly name so my real name doesn't show up all over the web in snide remarks (LOL). How far out is the warm water? Point the bow West, throttle her up, and drive until you see blue water and dolphins ... wish I were there!
@@firthmirth4177 We went about 35 miles to the 62° water. It was overcast so not much blue. We landed two and lost six I think. What a hoot! I’ll be doing that again soon, after I sort out some gear issues. Millie was great of course. I’m getting some air in my hydraulic steering so I need to revisit some connections and bleed things again. Minor issue fortunately. About 90 miles all told, 30 gallons of gas.
@@rhenryinoregonCheapest tuna run I've ever heard of! :D :D :D When gas prices go up, you'll have the whole ocean to yourself ...
4:26 money shot!!!! That's the one I was waiting for, thank you so much for taking us on your journey. I have enjoyed ever video and learned. Starting my build in October. Beautiful boat.
Good luck on your build. This boat is a gem. Are you doing a GA? Kodiak edition or standard? How long? It’s an awesome boat and a fun build. Not easy but if you’ve got the time, it’s worth it. And the end result is something you can’t buy. Where are you located?
@@rhenryinoregon Maryland widebody, I've commented on a few of your other videos. Learned alot by watching, and inspiring. I know the videos took alot of time, time you could have spent building. I can't thank you enough for sharing this. Wishing you nothing but great health and tight lines.
@@danielmiller7069 Oh yes, I remember now. Apologies. Similar builds. Good luck!
Nice silvers! Boat looks great Randy! Nice day on the big blue to boot too!
Today was smooth as silk out. Foggy and cloudy but no swell and no wind. And no fish. Can’t win them all.
@@rhenryinoregon Nope, but you can certainly try! Any day on the water with nice weather is a win in my book...

@@rhenryinoregonNice! I haven't got one this year, but I haven't tried yet either... This fall though, once most of the crowd hangs it up for the year :)
Good to see you and your family enjoying the fruit of all your hard work.
We took my son, my nephew and his wife out today and covered 50 miles of ocean. It was a really fun family day despite a surprising lack of fish. Good times ahead.
I don't like salmon personally, but I'm glad you're having some luck. Boat is looking good.
We probably prefer the rockfish over salmon but we certainly enjoyed some fresh fillets last night with a side of fresh crab. Pretty good stuff.
@@rhenryinoregon glad you are enjoying the fruit of your labor.
Hi Randy, congratulations on your boat! I noticed the berth cushions which look real nice - did you make those, or outsource them?
I scrounged them! I got them from a guy who was going to restore an old Bellboy and had them custom made, then abandoned the project. They are very nice. For $50, I took a chance they would work and they do (mostly). I’ll modify the two in the cabin to be a little narrow. Otherwise, lucky find.
A huge congratulation towards your incredible amazing boat build. I've watched all your episodes thru the years and was amazed about your skills, tips & ideas. To be honest, I've stolen some of them into my own project a 1985 Sea Ray CC, transforming into a centre console off shore fish boat. Good luck on the seas!
Thank you! That means a lot. As they say, you don’t have to be crazy to build a boat like this but it helps. Nothing special here except determination to get it done. Today was spent on the ocean and I finally feel the full satisfaction of this effort. Take care!
Congratulations!
Thank you!
“Very Comfortable” is a great compliment. Really nice job. She looks like she rides very nice. How was the trip over the bar?
The bar was pretty flat, just foggy as heck. Today was a bit foggy north but cleared and was gorgeous and flat. Fishing not so great but that’s ok, boating was fantastic. It will be fun continuing customizations. I was doing 33 mph on 2’-3’ swell no problem. At 25 mph I was burning 3.5 gph. So maneuverable, super easy to come in on crab pots. Much easier than my 20’ Thunder Jet was. Best boat I’ve ever driven.
@@rhenryinoregon awesome. Glad you’re happy with it. I know what you mean about not catching. I built a micro-skiff for fishing the flats and so far I haven’t caught a thing from it, but I don’t care because it sure is fun just to ride around in something you built yourself.
I feel your joy.😊
All your skilled hard work paid off nicely. Love the boat. It’s like the end of an era
I promise to keep some videos coming, especially when we head north to Alaska next spring. I’ll likely build a dinghy this winter to carry on too, plus crab davit, downriggers, upholstery and all that stuff.

Thanks for that. I just got back from a four hour run getting the initial break-in done on the motor, and it sure makes it easy to get in and out of the boat. I will probably rework some of the cabling this winter as it’s a bit busier than I wanted. She runs like a champ though, and turns on a dime. I’m very pleased.
