A-League Couch Critics
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 9 มิ.ย. 2020
Hey, we're Brad and Sogg, two mates that love talking about Australian football.
We upload weekly videos chatting about the A-League on and off the field, as well as talking about the W-League, NPL and even local football like the Western Premier League. We're both Socceroos fans and love everything to do with Aussie Football.
Brad is a Western Sydney Wanderers fan who converted from being an NRL fan to truly love the round ball.
Sogg is a Sydney FC fan and grew up as a football loving kid.
We both advocate for a National Second Division, although we have differing opinions on who should be in it (sorry South Melbourne fans). But really we just want to see the game grow in Australia.

Brisbane has a stadium problem. Here’s how to fix it
มุมมอง 2.7K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
This week we look at why Brisbane needs a second rectangular stadium. Perry Park, long considered the home of football in Brisbane, has long been tipped as the ideal location for such a venue. But there seems to be very little support from the government, despite a big push from football fans. We spoke with Chris, who headed up a petition to the government, about the need to transform Perry Par...

Could we see more boutique stadiums in the A-League?
Western united just beat the league leaders!
The NST should be PAYING clubs to join it, then it might work.
Sydney f 😂
I honestly hope Townsville gets a second A league team. Football is quite big in Queensland.
With what fans will south be successful in the A League??
Why would the A League hire the superleague lawyer responsible for the stagnation of the sport of Rugby League for nearly two decades.
Auckland look like a breath of fresh air this season.
You're forgetting they tried doing the same thing they did with CCM in the early years but with the Nix, who also denied entertaining the idea of selling the licence.
make a video on Darwin Cubs. cool name and they need to be in bleague
I remember reading this off of a Wikipedia page not long ago, that proposed Rovers logo looks abysmal.
Hopefully with Brisbane hosting the 2032 Olympics and with a new Queensland government that has a new plan on stadium redevelopment, hopefully all stadiums in Brisbane will get a upgrade including perry park, the Gabba, suncorp, and even ballymore!!
Still remember the Rovers fans in Parra at one of the few SFC games played there.
A Penrith team would be sweet , hope they do it one day
I don't think we need any more teams in Sydney. Two were enough with the Wanderers and Sydney FC.
@@chandlehannel Happened back in the NSL days(& loosely aligned w/the Panthers apparently); didn’t go down too well. Upon relegation back to NSW state-league they revamped as a Uruguayan ethnic-club before folding for good.
I don't think the A-league can pull off an NRL/AFL model, by putting teams in every corner of a given city. Macarthur was overkill as it is. One team representing ALL of Western Sydney (Para, Blacktown, Bankstown, Canterbury, Penrith, Campbeltown) does its job.
Penrith is literally in Western Sydney that would be the most stupid thing ever
Penriths getting a new stadium and with the success of the panthers maybe the community can get behind it, not to mention how much the place has grown and how much it will grow i honestly think its possible but maybe in 10 years
I think we can all agree that a bullet was veritably dodged w/this one. Their current malaise notwithstanding, the Wanderers were truly the right choice.
Brilliant story this, legit forgot this was a thing till now
Another great video! 👍🏾
In Canadian Football League (gridiron), there is also an expansion team in Halifax, Nova Scotia called Atlantic Schooners that still remains "undefeated" from 1984 to now.
Thier colours and logo remind me of Saint Kilda in the AFL
That was probably one of the biggest problems with that initial project, and maybe one of the primary reasons it tanked so badly.
@@julesdalli9716looks like they are going for Sao Paulo in Brazil
When will a team be based out of Miller
Where is Miller?
Near Vaucluse.
Never, random ass suburb with no hype, SOUTH MELBOURNE NEXT
Keep aussie football stories coming bro
Pretty solid review of what occured. However the story under the covers with Sydney Rovers is fairly bleak. It had decent(ish) backers but the were some bad actors that forced their way into the bid that would ultimately assist with its downfall. These gentlemen lacked any business or sports management skills. It wasnt at all unique to SRFC but some of these individuals engaged in some very public and hostile debates. I won't name any names, simply because at least 2 have proved to be fairly litigious. but suffice to say they weren't the type of people that would ever manage to get a successful football team off the ground, even if the bid was somehow accepted. They went so far as to continue trying to white ant the Wanderers in the early years.
Thanks man! Love your videos!
Do we really count Canterbury-Marrickville as Western Sydney though? Marrickville is as inner West as they come and Canterbury is very much SW Sydney - and the club played all of their home matches in Dulwich Hill (Arlington Oval) which is within the Sydney tram network.
Yeah fair, I wouldn't count Marrickville as Western Sydney, but Canterbury - yes. South West Sydney is still a part of the Greater Western Sydney area
@@ALeagueCouchCritics Right but Canterbury-Marrickville played every single game except one of their NSL home matches at Arlington in Dulwich Hill which is very much inner West, and the one game they didn't play in Dulwich Hill was played in Kensington against Sydney Olympic at ES Marks (Sydney City's home ground). Interestingly, Sydney Olympic played all their home games that year (1986) at Pratten Park in Ashfield so still inner West! Olympic were relatively well-supported back then by NSL standards, a shame they dropped off so much.
@@ALeagueCouchCritics even the suburb of Canterbury isn't even really western sydney.Canterbury is often paired with bankstown(maybe due to NRL club name) but closer to CBD than bankstown in some parts.Canterbury is on both sides of the cooks river and 15kms max to CBD town hall.
I suppose it depends on how broadly you define "Western Sydney". Suburbs aren't drawn on maps with rulers or T-squares.
@@julesdalli9716 Oh come on - no-one sensible defines Dulwich Hill as "Western Sydney"
Here's a wonderful idea. Just have an open pyramid and allow teams to rise and fall on competitive merit.
Australia had a national competition since the 1800s in the Sheffield Shield. Some very famous players played in it and there were summers where it was the biggest cricketing fixtures of the season. Frank Lowy, in his book, published before he became involved in the FFA/A-League said that the NSL was a lame duck apparent very early in it's existence. They could not sell the tv rights or get sponsors. They even considered a composite club competition back in the 1970s that would be based on geographical clubs rather than ethnic backgrounds. So, we could have had the A-League back in 1977.
Canterbury surely have to be a serious contender. Christchurch is the 2nd largest city in NZ and they’d be the sole representative for the South Island , 1.3million people. And a brand new world class stadium is currently being built. They’re the only highly populated region left without a side.
Why is everyone saying Wollongong? Firstly, they wouldn’t call the team “Wollongong” - they would avoid using any geographic place name. Secondly, the region can barely support the NRL team and the NBL team has nearly folded many times, going into administration.
If City move to the South-East like rumored then I think in the long run South Melbourne is a viable expansion, but teams like Wollongong, Canberra, Ipswich/2nd Brisbane, and Gold Coast all deserve a fair shot first. Thats also under the assumption that South can keep up their general move away from being a club for Greeks. Nothing against different cultural diaspora's in Australia and clubs should certainly have a right to be proud of their history and heritage, but nationalism should have no part in our domestic top flight and these clubs should be marketed to all football fans (they can definitely keep the half time souvlaki's though)
Meanwhile Macarthur has just announced a $40M dollar debt. What a joke. Western United have strong potential imo, especially with the new boutique stadium and an expanding area, but Macarthur will likely fold or relocate. Bring on Canberra and Wollongong Wolves
Whats the background music?
The A League will never be complete without South Melbourne in it. Pure and simple.
I think the commentator has overlooked the ethnic issue. We can't go back to those days.
Great Video. Would have liked some info re the FA and APL breaking apart and the impact of Covid but otherwise fantastic. Promotion / relegation would be the best thing for the A League, but protecting your own self interests (no competition to my franchise) seems to be the way of Soccer in this country. I think Macarthur can grow its fanbase - but they haven't started building their highly promoted $30m Training Facility yet either. Small stadiums are a must while the crowds are small, in my opinion. People go for the atmosphere and nothing worse than an empty stadium.
Great video lads
I’ve just moved to south east Sydney from the UK, what are the barriers for an A-League club to be founded here or for like the Sutherland sharks to expand.
I don’t think the A-League will add anymore teams to Sydney. If Sydney gets another team, it’ll be via promotion, but there are no plans for that in the near future.
The fact that the available Melbourne license has been taken so many times by consortiums with deep pockets but no footballing history or heritage has diminished the competition as a worthwhile spectacle. I'm a South fan from way back and still have a membership and will never support an A-League club unless it's South. When you look at Heart/City and Western United, it's pitiful that most games these clubs play are played in empty stadia which shows the league is not appealing to the Australian public it was marketed to. Clubs like South would bring existing passionate fan bases and fans through turnstiles. I was there when South opened the Lakeside stadium with a game against West Adelaide, we were all on the terraces crotch to butt so more of us could fit in and watch Jimmy Tsekinis tear our team apart. No A-League club has this, they are just teams playing in expensive stadia too big for their markets in most cases. The A-League will not be sustainable until all fans are welcome, both "old soccer" and "new football"
A little culture didn't hurt anyone. In fact, culture is exactly what this league needs. A league needs as much european influence as possible.
The only way South Melbourne to enter A-League is probably red bull to take over.
Crazy that in a 13-minute video, you didn't once mention the real reasons, other than financial, why the FFA never considered South or any of the other ethnic-backed clubs for the A-League.
And what reasons were they? Mind you, Brisbane Roar got in too, despite their backers Lions FC being a Dutch club
The A league and soccer Australia won’t be happy until they dilute the product or implode completely by continually adding irrelevant teams
Southern Cross. Such a perfect name.
There's no way it could be worse than PNG in the NRL.
People need to learn to be patient, not every club needs to be an instant success from the getgo. WU and Macarthur are a work inprogress. They are building their base and both clubs already achieved on field success. All they need is time.
The A League needs to stop acting like the NRL and focus on grass root growth instead of the "build it and they will come" mentality. Unite Round is a joke and sees significantly lower crowds than games that would otherwise occur at home.
The National Second Tier is a joke. An FA cup style competition is not even what was wanted or originally planned.
