People post click bait shit on reddit all the time. “Noobs” asking the most triggering questions knowing full and well what the question implies. Also a ton of these “look what i found in my dads attic” posts.
Why no one talking about how they didn’t reprint in universe “Rick” since he’s innistrad themed 😒
It's called integrity....
Re: "Lifecraft Engine", I think it an interesting addition to a Standard Merfolk kindred deck with "Deeproot Pilgrimage" that already has access to "Vodalian Hexcatcher". With "Deeproot" in play tap a non-token Merfolk to crew it, get a token, attack with it, get another token. And/or, end of opponent's turn, tap any untapped non-token Merfolk into the vehicle and get that many tokens. This deck isn't good (I've tried) but vehicles and the tokens they trigger can eke out a win when you don't manage to go infinite with "Deeproot" and a pair of "Forensic Researcher". Excited to see if Aetherdrift does anything more for this deck.
For the love of Christ, keep the words Foot and ball outta your mouth richard! Especially when you butcher an example on something you visibly have zero high level experience in. Challenge flag for starters…which single handidly defeats every point you made for this. But no please, aside from vanilla takes like the beginning please stop acting like you really know about ball, it’s once again visibly evident.
Cards are probably all proxies for that "find" // As for the match, I would tap the land floating the mana and not use it. If I am going to win, I want to win the right way and not by a mistake that was missed. If things were in turns, I would show I have the win next turn and ask for a concession or accept the draw.
Innistrad remastered is just a money grab. I hope it flops hard. As for the scandal, while only hearing one side of the story, it seems like the intent was to pull one over on the opponent and cheat an extra mana for the win. Judges should definitely have more tools at their disposal because this just incentivizes cheating.
Just based on the simplicity of the game state, it should be the assumption that this was wilful cheating. I can understand if there was a complicated stack with cost reduction effects in play and one less mana got tapped for an X spell somewhere. But playing a 1 cost enchantment and passing is basically the simplest game action you can take and considering that the cheater thought long and hard beforehand, it’s just apparent to me that they knew the winning line needed one extra mana and hoped they could distract from the cheat by pushing immediately to upkeep to cast scrollshift. They could have played Hopeless Nightmare and Scrollshift in their Main Phase in the hopes of drawing an extra land for the additional play but they didn’t because not drawing that land would mean they wouldn’t be able to cheat the second Scrollshift with their lands already tapped while cheating on the mana was a guaranteed win and they knew it.
I'd respect a sports team declining a blatantly wrong call. Imagine a coach wanting their team to earn the win rather than being gifted a win. It would reinforce a good culture and integrity.
I recently discovered Hot Mulligan as they're playing a festival I'm going to this year. At first I thought Crims shirt was a Magic mulliganing reference then looked at my recently played on Spotify 😂
Considering it lead to a game winning state, I doubt it was an accident.
This is a phenomenal line!
Regarding INR. If you are buying singles, then all reprints are good reprints and will help drive down the price. In that sense, it's a great set. Would I buy a box, oh hell no. But I'm never going to complain about a reprint set. At worst, it's going to address a lot of cards that have over-inflated price tags because of scarcity. There is no world where Edgar will stay anywhere near $100. If I had to guess, the 'missing' cards will likely appear in upcoming sets as special guests and they are trying to keep their reprint equity up.
I think the reason you can't assign ill intent to the esper player is because the gruul player was dead on board to this line of play esper most likely paused to think if they had a better line of play then sped up once they decided to live or die by the draw step lock line. Then the judge is called because of the level of play and gruul player received a disappointing call. At my fnm I tap the mana for you cuz I'm being a good sport at a actual tournament id say I'm sorry as I casted the spell
My bet some guys vindictive ex girlfriend revenge tossed a guy's collection on the side of the road
You can't compare this to a ball sport with subjective umpiring of ball handling. Compare it to something like competition chess or poker, what happens there?
To add to this, I have been involved with competitive dodgeball at the international level for a few years now and that is a game where 1. Some degree of self reffing is expected (taking your hits, even if a ref didn't see it) and 2. A single hit not taken can swing a set or a whole game. In the event that a single hit not taken could have changed the result of a game, especially a final, the game footage (generally available all the way to down to state league games in Australia) can be reviewed and results overturned. It's rare, but it happens.
We need Magic penalties, failure to pay your mana, warning and a 5-life penalty
Commie Commander here, This is 100% the fault of wizards of the coast. Let me explain why I believe this issue is 100% the fault of Wizards of the Coast. Magic: The Gathering's image and professional-level play began with them, and they remain at the heart of it to this day. Wizards created the concept of a Magic: The Gathering Pro Judge, and yet they've failed to properly invest in the very system they built. In the past, they got away with compensating judges with rare promo cards, some of which would later become highly valuable. While it wasn't ideal, it worked at the time. However, they don't even offer that anymore. Now, judges receive little to no meaningful support, reflecting the fact that Wizards sees judges as a cost rather than an asset. If Wizards truly valued judges, they would treat them like the professionals they are. They could hire full-time judges and deploy them to major tournaments as needed. Alternatively, they could establish a fair contractor model, offering stipends based on tournament size and complexity. For instance, managing a 2,000-player event should include compensation proportional to the workload and logistical demands. Judges are critical to the game's integrity, yet Wizards' neglect shows they’ve never prioritized them appropriately. The current controversies are the inevitable result of this longstanding disregard.
What's funny is red is actually the best mono color in cedh purely because of magda
People are always in disbelief when someone finds an amazing score of collectibles. The reality is that there are just a lot of people out there who do not care about what you care about. I am a collectible dealer in a non-card hobby. I have seen all sorts of things that people got given to them for free, or paid almost nothing for. I have seen $100 items from estate sales bring $10,000 on eBay. I once bought an item, someone paid $20 for, for $5,000. Crazy finds do happen. They never seem to happen for me, but they do happen. There are a lot of people out there who just don't care about MTG and would probably throw some cards away without messing with them.
As a long time competitive player, I 100% believe that it's the player that didn't tap choice how to proceed. Whether they go for the kill, concede, tap the land, etc... as long as it's a legal play, then it's fair game. Competitive play implies that winning is #1 and you should use every advantage that you have presented to you. At the same time, if you feel morally obligated to make this right, by all means tap that land. Me personally, I'm probably just going for the win in this spot
Lifecraft Engine is perfect for 'Depala, Pilot Exemplar' :)
wasnt her only out to use 7 mana with 6 lands because the logical play would be to flicker your lockdown instead of the nightmare because you were dead on board so she went into the turn with the intention of falsly tapping. only other explanation is she cant count to 7
They do this is in golf. Players have DQed themselves for fouls in big time big money tournaments.
At my local shop there is a fish player, in standard! He's been asking for this
Yeah straight up “forgetting to tap the mana” is either on purpose, which should be rolled back, or on accident, in which case you would say “oh I meant to do it, so now I’m going to do it”
Do you not tap your mana before casting a card? How is it even possible to forget?
Ive literally gotten a whole ass reprimand for accidentally looking at the bottom of my library while shuffling (changed how I shuffle for that) That guy can easily live with a loss (that would result from tapping the land) from that.
I think you guys should do a Cheatyface commander game where the goal is to try to try to get away with cheating the most to win the game, using tournament REL to enforce game actions
Richard has to be drama farming right? Both players agreed that the one was dead on board if not for the mistapped mana. Even if the judge didn't feel empowered to correct the game state, the violating player had it within the rules and their ability to mitigate their own mistake. That's just basic sportsmanship. The comparison to physical penalties in other sports is very strained. The analogy that other sports just call them penalties instead of cheating, is also wrong. People call out professional sports players for cheating all the time but not every penalty is a cheating in either game though much of the time that distinction does come down to plausible deniability and reading intent. Pitchers don't "accidentally" doctor a ball in baseball, take streoids, spy on opposing team signals with a telescope, cork a bat, deflate a football, etc. The thing that smells about this scenario is that the player should have recognized the clear winning line on their own turn if they had 7 mana. So by the converse, they should have been intimately aware that they were dead on board and did not have the mana to play all 3 spells required. But instead of playing out the turns as expected or scooping instead of passing the turn, they proceeded to make a novice mistake of not tapping any mana at all for a spell on their own turn, and subsequently piece together a sub-optimal variation of that line and obfuscate it among some phase changes and make it seem like it dependended on opponent actions.
Many people don't think of ramp spells as time walks and I think that is what they are closer to. You are actively setting your board state ahead turns when you cast ramp spells.
Where WoTC missed out is not making this set Standard legal. The sinple rationale is saying "Y'all love Innistrad, we love Innistrad. It's a great way to bring new players in with Kindred yadda yadda...."
The movie poster cards are going to be so expensive. This set will not be heavily opened and they are going to be a casual favorite.
Lifecraft Engine will be the only lord available for faeries in standard when Aetherdrift comes in.
Cant they just make a rule that when someone is found to have not paid for a spell and they cant rewind, the player needs to tap lands so they have rhe correct amount remaining?
They could/should, but it isn't a judge rule right now AFAIK. The sportsmanship take should be the player should either play out the turn as if they were a mana down or scoop (because that is the unambiguous result of not having the extra mana). This would be well within the rules for the player to do and consistent with all players' informal obligation to try to "maintain the correct game state". Richard's take seems to be that sportsmanship doesn't matter, just what you are allowed to do right now.
@vctrsigma yes I understand that it isn't a judge rule, by "they" I meant WOTC should change the rules for competitive REL
I love the movie poster cards. The emrakuk and griselbrand look amazing
I think being a good human being is a good thing. And it was scummy to get a free mana and not just take the L. Shouldn’t we as a species expect honor from eachother over this stupid angle shooting? Respect gained for Crim, respect lost for Richard.
That judge call was so bad and was easily fixable. Not only did u have a crowd of witnesses but u also had both players agreeing on what the game state should be. The call should of been for that land to be tapped at the least or at the most for the match to be made a draw since the player who forced the mistake through should not have been rewarded for it as well as the other player should of been more careful after the firat time the opponent tried to jump ahead like they did earlier in the match when they tried to take there turn when he never had passed it to them. Weather it was intentional or not in the end they should not have been rewarded for the sloppy play.
You're saying the pro tour is full of cheaters? I swear someone just said that and everyone killed him. Pros never cheat.
GIMME ME ALL THESE MOVIE POSTER CARDS!!!!!❤❤❤ I NEED THEM ALL!
Crim saying that "retro videogames is a different story" is so funny as a guy who works in the retro videogame market. It is 100% exactly like his card shop experiences where people come in with every copy of Madden and don't understand why i can only offer cents for it. They hear that old videogames are worth money and don't realize that the stuff that's worth money are obscure games with limited releases that no one bought
Why are sports the benchmark of how we should conduct ourselves in Magic? If we as a community have more integrity than sports communities, then Magic should the benchmark. Who cares if sports are full of cheating that is just called penalty? In Magic we should call a spade a spade.
Cheaters are cheaters. Who doesn't tap 1 mana for a 1 cc spell. Penalty should be a game loss.
Its cheating. They knew what they were doing. You have 6 mana, played a sorcery speed spell without paying the mana cost and played fast hoping OP wouldnt notice. And he didn't. If this is how judges rule things next can i use 3 bolts quickly with 2 mana. Since it moved too far game resumes as is. "Oh i was nervous so i casted my spells really fast. "
THis should have been titled "You woudn't download a mana would you?"
Unpopular Opinion: I literally dont give a shit, I wasn't there and its none of my business. I wasnt there and I'm not going to pretend to be Sherlock Holmes and say I know why everything played out. Its done and over with and its not worth starting a hate train over
lifecraft engine will 100% go into cEDH Magda, I'm hyped!
@Richard there is something called sportsmanship or ethics. In professionnal ultimate frisbee for example, players are allowed to reverse a ref call if that call is advantageous to them. If they think the ref made a wrong call and don't want to take advantage of it, they can reverse it. And players does do it. Granted there is not much money on the line compared to other sports like football, but so is MtG. If you can take advantage of such a situation and not get any disadvantage if you get caught, players will have incentive to "soft cheat".
Competitive rel can be rough but if you want to preserve the integrity of the game you do the right thing weather it disadvantages you or not,.just tap the correct mana on your own and take the L
They've already brought non-set cards into remastered sets. Time Spiral Remasteded has retro frame remand... which was from Ravnica City of Guilds
Yes.
