Documenting an era of indie music (2001-2009). Three new episodes every month!
Heroin addiction took Albert Hammond Jr to the brink
It's been easy to have a soft spot for Albert Hammond Jr over the years as he always seemed the most happy-go-lucky member of the Strokes, but a gnarly addiction to heroin almost cost him his life in the second half of the 2000s. In this video I get into whether he turned to drugs due to the suffocating success of the Strokes, a toxic friendship with Ryan Adams, his lowest point during the making of 'Angles' and how he bounced back to get clean and reject the rock n roll cliche.

The story of the Futureheads' heart-stopping 'Hounds of Love' cover
มุมมอง 537หลายเดือนก่อน
The Futureheads are an art rock band from Sunderland in the UK who many 2000s-heads remember fondly for their classic cover of 'Hounds of Love' by Kate Bush. It was voted best single of 2005 by the NME and still stands up today as an essential gem of the era. In this video I get into why they decided to cover such a famous song, the troubled making of their brilliant debut album with Gang of Fo...
Wild Beasts were the last band that mattered
มุมมอง 6102 หลายเดือนก่อน
Wild Beasts are my favourite band of all time, so this one was difficult to put together as it wasn't easy to find the right words. The four piece from Cumbria dabbled in theatrical art rock and luxurious synth pop, releasing five classic albums before splitting up in 2018. If you loved them, you really loved them. They were just one of those bands. In this video I make the argument that Wild B...
A wild tour of Japan almost broke The Libertines

#thelibertines #petedoherty #japan Japan in the spring of 2003 was the Libertines' first-ever tour outside of Europe and it almost ended in catastrophe. In this video I get into an infamous on-stage bust up in Sapporo, why Pete risked it all to smuggle hard drugs into the country, late nights in the bright neon-soaked lights of Tokyo and why the band have never toured Japan since 2003.

I've been spinning the debut Datsuns album a lot lately and I forgot how much it kicked ass. I'll fight anyone who doesn't think Lady, MFer from Hell, In Love, Sittin' Pretty and of course Harmonic Generator were some of the best rock songs of the decade. They fell out of my orbit after 2002 so it's been enjoyable to be reacquainted with them after so long. That debut is super tight with not a ...

i love your narration style. very unique as if you're not reading it. keep on that
Really appreciate that, ta. My earlier videos were much more scripted but I had enough of doing it that way.

Is that you in the tymb
No haha
how can you compare The Velvet Underground with The Strokes?
Oops 🙊
Not comparable in any way, the strokes suck. Bad.
@@tp8271 they are a pre-fabricated boy band made of rich kids.
I'd say Luna would be a better choice. I remember Blender magazine called them "Velvet Underground Jr.". Plus Sterling Morrison played guitar on the Luna track Friendly Advice.
He was a ketamine addict as well took it like him out of friends did but shot himself up
Yours To Keep is a 10/10 album. I can't believe how underrated AHJ is as a solo artist.
I’ve been recently getting into this era of music and watching these kinda enhance the music. Thanks
Glad to hear it!
I met The Strokes just before their first album came out. Albert and Fabrizio were really nice and easy to talk to. Julian and the other two were twats. I'm glad Albert overcame his addiction. He's a good dude.
That’s the feeling I get too, and Fab and Albert are my favorites. I think they are the most charismatic members after Julian. Julian, Nick and Nikolai seem arrogant in their way of exaggerating a false cool attitude (Julian and Nick in particular). Often the Tall ones are arrogant, because they have the attention of girls.
poor little rich boy
Been addicted to heroin n fentanyl for 25 of my 42 years. To the brink doesnt even sum it up... i been to the brink and then got in rocket ships n hot the red button so many times... so lucky to be alive
He wasnt on it until they made 3rd lp 2005 .Ryan adams gets the blame in that book meet me in the bathroom he was also on ketamine .
Opiates are the worst of all imo.
rich kid poser intentionally getting addicted to heroin because everyone did that in the 70's and If he's gonna pretend he's living in the 70's also...he has to!
Yeah, In possibly the most overrated band ever
Not for nothing, but these guys always had money and they're in NYC, which unfortunately has the best, cleanest shit around.
Los Angeles is otherway wround 😂
These guys were all born rich. For Christmas their dad's pulled together and bought them a band.
Yes, but they were good, otherwise it wouldn't have caught on
So? There’s plenty rich kids who can’t put two chords together
And parent s or a parent that pay for their son s or daughter s habits that arnt famous and well off .All the strokes had day jobs to pay their rent before they was well known in uk .Jules worked in a bar which was perfect at the time for him as he was a alcoholic for 1 and met his future ex wife Juliet? Who was a waitress there at the time.
Stupid comment
Saw the Strokes in 2006 in Boston. You could tell some of them were struggling, but still fantastic show. They played Last Nite near the beginning and closed with Take It Or Leave It
In the 2000s we glorified rock star behavior such as Pete's. And by running out to stadiums whenever someone from the 2000s goes on a nostalgia tour, we STILL DO (or acknowledge that part of us still exists)
He’s a colossal Douche
What you said about the bands from this era glorifying alcoholism and use of substances is 100% true. Seen that with my own eyes Guys from New York especially tend to struggle with that stuff, it's a hard place to keep sober I tell ya.=
Living with an addiction is totally different for a rich kid like this guy. These guys can dick around all they like and then when they want to get clean they can just toddle off to some tropical paradise for a couple weeks. Then go live at the second or third home so you are out of the orbit of the users you were hanging around with before. Try doing that when you're on the dole and living on some council estate. Life is just a playground for these people. An H addiction that many would never recover from is merely a speedbump for them. A roll around in the dirt with the peasants, some cheap thrills. Then back to the yacht or the villa on the french riviera. Yeah, im jealous.
@@paulgordon6949 well articulated. Hit the nail on the head.
That's just you projecting mate. I got sober in NYC , I heard all the stories and interacted with every conceivable addict from millionaire to skidrow junkie and it doesn't matter , the struggles to stay sober and working the steps to rebuild and make smends to the people we've harmed are the same. That's not to say thst money can't help but in the end it doesn't matter. That's why i csn identify with any addict no matter what there circumstances are.
I agree to some degree,, but the wealthy addicts tend to have heavier addictions and can afford to never hit rock bottom. Either way stick to weed and drink.
What twaddle.
But a lot of very rich Rock Stars still end up in a very bad way , and often dying. Money can only insulate you so much .
Attempting to detox while on the road from heroin - having to perform each night. You will lose everytime.

Iggy Pop has three words of advice to anyone starting to do well in music: stick to weed.
It's the truth! As an addict of 24 years. Weed never caused any problems and if I don't have it, I just don't have it.
Iggy shoulda stuck to his own advice!
Yeah stick to weed if you want your career to die before it began
Luckily he didn't follow his own advice and let himself indulge in all kinds of drugs that gave him experiences he used to produce some of rock's most innovative records.
He did,it takes an Addict to know an Addict @@curtisbush5728
He’s always had his family funds to fall back on I suppose - he can’t really lose it all like a regular guy. He’s unlikely to become homeless like Lanegan is he?
In fact, if he did lose all his money and became homeless I would be impressed. Doesn’t he have a supermodel girlfriend?
Mark Lanegan was worth 100 of any of these designer pricks.
Yeah, but even Lanagen had advantages, royalties, Kurt paid for his dope while alive, so did Layne..then Courtney paid for his rehab when he hit rock bottom. Then Queens gave em a part time job post rehab. So I think if your a famous Rockstar you'll always be privileged and have advantages. Which I'd say makes it that much harder to stop using. As a former heroin addict, I speak from experience. The worst thing that ever happened to me was getting a high paying job. When I worked at dead end jobs, it was kinda easy to kick when I wanted to. But as soon as I started making 6 figures, it was over for me..I can say I was a fully functioning addict. I paid my bills, and spent the rest on dope. It went from easy to impossible to stop and it took me nearly 7 yrs. after getting that job to finally realize what I had to do to stop. And am still not out the woods yet..it hasn't been very long. So we'll see..it's very hard kickin' when you have the means to get high with little risk financially..
No need to hate or get jealous just because someone has more money than you.
He once stopped a wrong UN trying to mug his girlfriend with a big grin on his face Albert stopped him ,5 guys that know absolutely nothin about lockdown strokes stream Julian joked to him that he looked suicidal but that was lockdown when the new abnormal was out
I still absolutely adore his fantastic underrated debut solo album 'Yours To Keep' :-)
Momentary masters is his best solo work imo, just my opinion

Hope you're alright! New video should be out in the next couple of days now that Christmas is out of the way.
Played in wrinkle 1997-2001 (placebo dinosaur jr nada surf band), Ross joined on drums. Ry got engaged and was gonna moved to Chicago. Gary changed his mind and 2002 became the cribs changed their sound to strokes/ pavement/ huggy bear etc. cribs were an art noise from Gaz n ry at Wakefield and Barnsley college. One of the best bands to emerge from the 2000s. The diversity and quality of their catalogue of songs is incredible : hard rock, punk, blues rock, shoegaze, folk, country, blues, psychedelic, gospel, pop...
Regina is a genius
Correct!
Amazing band, criminally underrated
my fave band for the last 11 years... they're incredible live and very sweet in person too!
Nice one!
Crap Aussie Nirvana wannabes, similar to the equally-crap Silverchair. This was around the time that the NME was desperately hyping any band that came along in the vain hope that they would magically turn out era-defining music. To this day, I'm not sure if they were cynically pushing music they knew was rubbish, or if their writers genuinely couldn't tell good music from bad. I mean, a couple of years prior to this, they tried to convince their readership that Terris (remember them) were the next big thing. I bought Highly Evolved on the strength of the rave reviews it got and, even with my tempered expectations, I was quite stunned that it wasn't even crap. It was worse than that - staggeringly mediocre. Bang-average songs produced and polished within an inch of their existence, airless sounds, plodding drums, thin "punk" guitar and weedy screaming. Oh, and crap cod-ska. I mean, listen back to "Highly Evolved", "Outtatheway", "Get Free" or "1969" - they're awful. Perhaps the antiseptic sound of the album wouldn't have been a factor if the tunes were any good, but Mr Nicholls just wasn't a particularly good songwriter. To compare him to Kurt Cobain as a writer is frankly ridiculous. They didn't have the goods to live up to the hype and the second album, and every subsequent one, predictably bombed. I quite like Autumn Shade, though.
I remember seeing Harmonic Generator on TV in the early 2000s and it's been stuck in my head ever since. That moment started to change my pre-teen musical tastes and I realized that there was something more interesting going on than the nu-metal that was popular at the time
Oh yeah, that video was class.
Well this is complete bollox. I got it when it came out but it was hardly a smash hit. I was a bit non plussed at first thinking seems a bit out of date as britpop was 6 years ago. Even 2 years the only real impact was a few people wearing the red army jacket - hardly a cultural revolution. The average joe if he knew him at all just knew him as the guy who advertised being a junkie. I was a fan at the time but no one discussed his music or lyrics it was all a freak show. By the time they had achieved their peak with 2nd album they finished soon after anyway so were 'on top' ir relevant for about 4 or 5 months tops
Not sure how old you are but my experience was by early 2003 they were already huge in underground youth culture. Everyone I went to school with was listening to them. It was a freak show if all you read was The Sun...to say nobody discussed their music at the time just ain't true bruv.
I remember listening to VHS Beta, Cut Copy, The Bravery, New Young Pony Club,The Raveonettes and of course the bigger bands. Those were the days.
Indeed. Check out my video on Cut Copy. One of my all time favourite bands.

There's a really good, detailed account from someone who was there and witnessed it unfold on the website Everything2, can't link on here of course but easily found if you Google 'Everything2 Leeds festival riots'. This person says it started with a bunch of people just mindlessly setting fire to things, then it escalated when the riot police showed up and started baton charging, beating and arresting random people who were just standing nearby. Also apparently there were nasty riots in 2000 and 2001 and the festival was lucky to still be held at Temple Newsam in 2002.
Decent Days and Nights is a personal favorite of mine as I heard it while playing Burnout Revenge years back, though Hounds of Love is a strikingly beautiful track in of itself
