Subaru Swapped RWD CRX: the FIRST DRIVE!

3 years in the making...Project Becky DRIVES! Not far. Ok, so Co-Part would list "lot drives". But that's plenty good enough for me. Huge thanks to the Avocado Avenger himself, Mr. Marc, for... well, everything. Far too much to list here, but most topically, helping capture this monumental moment. Dude, I want to know how the transmission center diff holding up after the 2WD modification. I wanted to know what you did with the roll washer when taking out the inner gear?
Now imagine that but rear wheel wheel drive. Tubbed with trailer fenders front and rear. Initially I only planned to use tubing in the rear, around and in front of and behind where the axle is going to be. However I got a lot of ideas watching your build. That subie sound coming from that crx is amazeballs
Awesome 😎
All thread? Lol
This build is such an inspiration. I know a little about metal fabrication and welding though have certainly never built a car before but my mind understands cutting snd welding. I bought an 86 crx si last year on my birthday in october and had it towed to the crib. Id been searching for a 3rd gen civic hatchback for 13 or 14 years. Intial plan was kswap, then f23a to b awd . Noe of these fit what i had in mind. To me its alwasy been with these why did honda put torsion bars and rear beam axle many years ago. So ffwd to today, the engine and transmission are out, front sits securely on jackstands. Future is 8.8 explorer rear end, boxed rear similar to what you did, with LSD and discs, rwd trans and j35a4 utilizing a j series subframe from an odyessy or cl or tl maybe. Thoughts?
What year is your explorer?
My entire floor is rotted out as well. Other then that though solid. Fenders were mostly gone ehen i bought mine, dooor panels plastics no goood . Nothing time and dennaro and learning and know how wont take care of. Fun fact if you were keep fhe unibody floor, that i recently learned is one of fhe only similarities between the 1 and 2 g are rhe floors exactly the same; alll. Love the build , thabks for the inspiring content muchacho
Love this my man. I've never built a car before however I've planned for build most of my adult life. Just not financially alas, however I digress. I have present day an 86 crx si which I plan to make much different than stock , j series subframe , rwd. Thus far with out funds to divert to her quite yet I ve begun doing things that doesn't cost money such as engine trans and wiring removal. Thank you for the inspiration love the build
Subscribed! I love it. Will be awaiting updates eagerly. I’m a Honda guy and love the CRX! My personal project is planned to be a Civic engine and subframe mounted beneath the bed of my 1988 Ford Ranger. Seeing your videos makes me consider this route. I have a parts Subaru on hand with everything except the engine.
Has someone had to change the bushing that goes in the body frame!?
WOW. That's amazing. I have a forester 2011, but i was thinking of building an OHV XJ jeep, but now i think i'd rather have this for Sedona! Brilliant work!
i know im almost a year late to the party but this build guide is going to help me so much when i do a similar swap myself in a few months, thank you so much for showing everying, the good and the bad, and explaining the reason behind your ideas!
Any Idea what the exhaust to cylinder head bolt length is? I bought a M8-1.25x65mm bolts but I think I might need a 70mm.
Plasma and a brake. Nice shop upgrades.
Thumbs up for, “there’s no way this doesn’t look like I’m fisting a horse!” Lmao
Late to the party, but did you also add the subframe spacers on the rear?
No, didn't need to
Can u make one for x type jaguar 03 2 5 petrol automatic plz it will be one off
Watch one video of someone working on their old explorer for fun and now I'm in a rabbit hole of old explorer off-road enthusiasts. Makeup on a Pig but looks fun for sure. First vehicle was a '97 DOHC. Thing had been thru a lot when I got it. Didn't run at all either. Ended up figuring out how to fix it and get it running. Kept it goin for several years. Thing ended up blowing a hole in the block when the rear timing chain went. Only had 180k on it.
How this chanel disnt have millions of subs etc is beyond me
Love the raised center console for shifter and handbrake. 👌👌
Great work. Love this project Your welder is clearly on the wrong settings, those sounds are not normal, excessive penetration. 🤣🤣
Love the combination of louvers and airscoops. Heavy being all metal but definitely resistant👍👌.
Magnificent. Always loved the CRX. Great and insane work. 👌👌👍👍 Subbed. Time to binge watch the entire series.
Is there a temporary fix if I haven't put in the cradle bolts, like could I use spacers?
If you don’t have subframe spacers you’ll have pretty aggressive positive camber but it’s not the end of the world
Can you make it AWD? 🥹 please reply, I’ve searching everywhere if that would be possible.

You’d have to run the engine in the front. If going Subaru, with a Subaru transaxle/rear diff; or Honda, run a CRV transaxle/rear diff
You're a lycky man. 😎👍👍
Cant wait for the masterpiece
Where can I buy the Shifter adapter?
First 30 seconds of the video, light saber sound effects for the welds are a win. Subscribed.
May the force be with you
Damn I need to get back out to the garage. I watched through your whole build and took it as inspiration towards my own CRX. I did the whole frame and mounting for electric CRX mid-"engine" in January. All I have left is to mount the 2nd half of the battery and then redo the wiring harness too lol.
That sounds awesome! Every time I think I'm done, I find a new way to route stuff, or things to add. Never ending it seems.
@@Enginuity lol that's exactly what's happened to me. 2008 I got the CRX free not running. Rebuilt the motor that winter and got it back on the street. 2014 swapped it to a D15z1 motor aimed for fuel economy. It wasn't as good as I hoped so I started thinking about electric. 2021 I swapped in a Leaf motor and went full electric. 2022 I swapped in 40kwh batteries.. but it's fwd and traction isn't great at 50:50 weight ratio.. 2024 January I made it mid"engine". I'm building a battery box today hopefully it'll be running this month.
@@Windraver you've definitely gotta have more interior room than I do! LOL
I love it
Thanks!
Love progress on this!!!
Thanks!
What is the tire size on this set up? Were you able to get 15" rims to fit over the calipers?
it's in the intro, don't remember. yes, 15" cleared the calipers just fine.
nice quick battery disconnect, same place i put my push to start switch
Great minds!
Awesome work! Keep at it dude
Thanks man!
Excellent work! Glad you're hard at it, thanks for the update!
Not as far along as I'd like but getting there...
@@Enginuity I totally understand!
Yeah buddy! Haven't been in the garage in MONTHS - Inspiration for a rainy day coming up
Right on!
It’s so funny we are at the same point in our builds I’m waiting for my wiring shipment to come so I can finish my engine harness
LOL hooray for wiring!
Amazing proyect
Thanks man!
Torque?
No idea
That fuel tank is a hazard. Gingium on YT lost his mid-engine Eclipse when he built a similar tank, mounted it like yours, and had someone turn left in front of him and had a minor accident....that resulted in a ruptured aluminum fuel tank, that burned the entire car to the ground. Spend the money on a hard-cased fuel cell with a rubber bladder.
Thanks for looking out! I've been meaning to address this - the tank will be sealed and encased. Just haven't gotten there yet. I also need to finish the front half of the chassis tubing. Gingium also didn't have any type of crash structure from what I've seen.
Can the transmission be used in 2wd only and not perform this project if the rear cone is somehow closed off?
the shifter shaft sticks out the back of the trans, so you can't cut too much off
Is the shifter from an MR2?
it sure is
Where do you get the shift cables?

What’s going on brotha?! We need an update, even just a short vid explaining where things are at. hope to see an update soon!
thanks for checking in! just posted an update video :)
