Jason Harris Dog Training

I am an former Military Police dog and Quarantine detector Dog handler. I have been training dogs professionally for over 30 years. Most of us have had an experience with our dog that has been hard to deal with or you simply want to learn how to train your dog. My aim on this channel is to give you those tools.
Is your dog training realistic?
All too often on social media we see perfect Dog training videos done in extremely controlled situations. These videos can look very impressive however they are quite unrealistic as to what most people need out of their Dog.
What we want out of our dogs is a dog that comes back to us on the beach, at a dog park, walks past dogs nicely and a lot more.
Try not to get caught up in the fancy things that aren’t going to help you in real world situations. This video gives you some tips on working your recall and reminding you to train in some chaos sometimes.

When I read, "fear is often reinforced when a dog stands beside their owners," I wondered if training 'heel' is partly to blame for the increase in dog reactivity? Good video, btw:)
Yes, I do believe keeping a dog too close to you like heeling can certainly increase their confidence to react. However, it’s a tricky one because we need to keep our dogs under control when we’re in public. So in a sense we are forced to keep them close to us. Thanks
But it’s very hard to actually find other good dogs for mine to interact with. They’re owned by other people so I’ll need to develop a connection with them first which isn’t always easy
@@jclive2860 yes it can be difficult. This is why I have my training facility where I have access to dogs I can use.
But what if your younger dog on the leash was wearing a slip collar? This is what happened to me and I felt I ended up choking and hurting my dog more
My dog is a terrier mix and dislikes the same sort of dogs as this one has so this was extremely helpful, thanks so much
Thanks this was so helpful !
Can I ask why you chose that kind of collar as opposed to a slip collar? Thanks
I think it's important to see the equipment is a tool, communication and attitude with the training method can be used with whatever collar you have. I've tried many types with varying success because of my lack of understanding how to use it correctly😢
Thanks so much for posting this teaching video. Wish you lived near me. I thought toward the end you were going to touch on situations when people let their off leash dog run up to yours, but unfortunately you didnt. I would love to learn what to do in this situation and would love if you could cover this in another video. Am now a follower of your TH-cam channel!
Your presentation was a delight. On the other hand, I think more people should watch your video and I'd love to help you make that happen. May we delve deeper into this topic?
Fantastic video
For a malinois which is better halti or gentle leader?
Used a sliplead for a kelpie who would pull all the time on walks. 1 day using a sliplead he has stopped
Let’s say you have a new puppy. What is the first thing that should be taught, the second and so on.
Yes! I was ignorant about prong collars and was afraid to use one. Nothing worked - tried easy walker, gentle leader. Still pull, pull, pull and I'd come home from walks in tears. Then I researched Herm Sprenger prong collars, decided exactly what size and features I needed and learned HOW TO USE IT PROPERLY. Now my dog and I are both happy, heeling on a loose leash, and our walks are happy. (Videos on Utube helped)
Great job I’m glad you are enjoying your walks now.
Every time I use slip lead it fall from behind ears to throat. Most of walk time is spent adjusting it. My male boxer is a puller. It’s amazing how other people can keep it up. I start off with a short loose leach and do a quick snap when he gets ahead of me. He pulls hard. The pressure on his neck don’t seem to bother him cause he keeps going. Help?!!
Gorgeous Winston. Relaxing is a big deal. Well done. His coat looks amazing. Maybe you should do a Winston and Nash diet video. They're great dogs:)
Great points thanks Jason Edith enjoys your videos too. I'm realising that the practising is paying off, I've still so much to learn and appreciate these videos and the real world training sessions.
Keep it up
👌🏼
Excellent as always, Jason 👍 Me, I tend to have a 1 second gap between the name and the command. I want my dog to not confuse the name / command as a single word..... eg: Nashstay... Nashcome.... I do... Nash..... come 😊 Just my way 🤗
Thanks, i actually do separate his name and come.
@@jasonharrisdogtraining sorry, if you thought I was suggesting you don't do that..... I was mostly fleshing out the thought for other viewers, hoping to explain more..... You do great work.... I love what you do / how you train 👍
@@김미애-g3qthanks very much
Good dog training tips thank you
Any time!
Recent subscriber and love how you train. You inspire me to communicate better with my new puppy. Thanks so much🐾💕
Thanks for subbing!
Ah, great reminder to not use calling their name as meaning come. I'm guilty of doing that sometimes. I will try to not do this again.
I noticed the extra training for Nash at the end. They both did really well. Great video:)
Thanks!

The type of dog training now has created issues for people. I was told by a dog trainer she didn't like people saying no and I thought how does my dog know the difference for what is ok and what isn't. Then they said reward everything you like and I thought so withholding and reward is negative then. I just do what I think is right and I will raise my voice and I will say NO and I will not always use food or they expect it all of the time.
Good job you are being realistic
@@jasonharrisdogtraining I try to be but I am only learning and I used to watch a lot of dog trainers and made my own mind up after having bad experiences and making my mind up what dog trainers make sense as they explain, like your good self.
Thank you
Unless you want your dog to be a basketball ball. Listen to this man. Tone dominance, boundaries. It's not brain surgery people
You are completely correct. This is why my bio in social media says “Dog training isn’t complicated”
Forgive me. I must be more tired than I thought but what do you mean by won't be able to modify a dog's behavior without consequences?

Its impressive when you use clear, efffective comunication that they can understand,it makes a dog seem smarter
Omg I thank you for this. I have a Rescue and I have the same problem. I took her to the Riverwalk and the leash popped off the harness as she was pulling to go toward a dog, thankfully did not harm the dog, but the owner was telling me about halti. This happened yesterday so I’m doing my research.
Tell it like it is👐👍🏾🐾
Ports so bad for this. And its usually the dog of that sort or owner thats screaming with body language theyll fight and get right up into your dogs space and then snap at them or go off. So frustrating
Illegal in Europe, and it is totally shit what your doing to the dog, 😢
My dog sits waiting then prancing at the dog .then barking.
Thank you for sharing this! It's great to read both dogs body language and hear about your method (getting dogs used to being around other's and why they may not take treats).
Looks like you get a good workout too. 😁
Ha ha sure do
So if I have been out for a walk and fulfilled my dog and I have to go out. Is that okay,
If you think you’ve given your dog enough stimulation and exercise, absolutely. In the end we have to live our lives as well and our dogs should be independent enough to be home by themselves for times that it’s needed.
Mine is create trained.
@@suziecue3027not sure what that has to do with this video
Thanks for the vid. I've just started using a halti with our staffy girl, how long does it typically take before you transition back to a leash and collar?
Some people never transition back to the collar. It really depends on the dog. There’s actually no need to as a head harness can be used permanently. They are not dangerous for the dog and if they get conditioned to them, they can wear it quite comfortably.
I have a very fearful dog. 2 months out of shelter. Likely not socialized. Scared of outside, very flighty. Would a martingale be a better option to start with?
Interresting video. I have a super social dog with super high energy and sadly very few other dog owners wants their dogs dog to meet mine... In the end he is becoming a frustrated greeter :( I am working on it, but it is good that I understand what the problem is, and TY for this video. <3
Woof woof its a 🐕 🛷 🐶
👍🐕🐕❤❤
Some methods take a little longer. Just have to wait for the dog to reach old age😅
😂😂😂😂
You here that so often, Dog was attacked and became reactive/aggressive or fearful. Good to know it doesnt have to end up a solo life away from dogs
Yes, with a lot of dedication and patience we can bring them back to learn to trust dogs again.
There are to many pop up dog trainers who have no idea.
100% correct. I love the term pop-up Trainer it describes it very well.
Can I ask because you said use your dogs name before asking for a command. My question is if you use a dogs name too much does it white noise it's name .
Definitely not if you use inflection with your voice the right way they learn to respond to their name. The only time they won’t respond to their name is if you don’t enforce the command you ask. by allowing them to ignore you.
Where is the demo to show how to use it correctly?
This is the first video I have seen with a dog similar to mine and the trainer actually using methods that makes sense and communicated with the dog in a calm manner. This method, is firm and corrective, but not harsh like other methods I have seen like dogs getting strangled by the slip lead... I have so much to learn and still struggle with an aggressively reactive dog who is a dominant female, but this video has helped me so much.... Thank you!
my pleasure just remember to remain consistent and patient. It is okay to have expectations with your Dog that is how you will get through to them. Like you said in your comment, it’s not about being harsh but you are allowed to expect them to do things.
Come on where’s the common sense
The Client going to this Trainer is over 80 years old so she doesn’t know much better. She is just doing her best to help her Dog and trusted that the Trainer knows what they’re doing.
