Well the chat was two months agao.I'm kind of lucky, because I have a bloody bronchitis and am tied to my bed. Otherwise I would never have had the time to find this video. I've already watched part one and learned so much, so I'm very content to be able to watch all these exiting videos the next couple of days, comfortably from my bed. Well with a lot of heavy caughing inbetween. Greetings from the south of france.
Oh no! So sorry to hear that! I'm hoping to do the third and final video soon. I'm thinking I'll need to paint first and then do a voiceover afterwards since it is distracting to paint and teach at the same time! Get better!
This the most REALLY uncompromising instructive painting tutorial I've come acrooss so far. You explain 3very step comprehe sively. I follow some othe good tutorials, but somehow there is alway a step that happens that you don't see, which often seems to be a very important one. I sometimes wonder if they don't REALLYwant us to learn, and it's just a demonstration of their superiority as an artist and they don't want ??? us to learn these vital steps??
Wow, thank you! I think part of it is that it's hard to teach while you paint. And not every artist is a teacher. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Why not compare the same colors side by side? This is a poor comparison. Jumps around and is confusing.
Because I wasn't comparing the colors. I was comparing quality.
Long time quilter and local professional quilter. This is all new for me, so going from one medium to one of many has been eye opening. But overwhelming. I also did hair for 25 year. A special colorist when I retired to quilt. I get color, but I feel like I have so many choices and abstract art makez makes me feel emotional. I want to be more neutral but it’s not my natural or first love. New development. I feel out of my depth. Deep breath and try again, tmrw. I’ve made hundreds of quilts. Quilted even more, hand and machine, but I’ve managed two paintings and three broken gelli plates. Back to canvas and paper. Does real life chaos make us like this? Your art, most of it, moves me. Ty.
I refuse to be “artsy”. I want to understand how to convey all of this emotion. Uggghh.
I always tell folks when I’m stuck that, “we’re still negotiating”. Talking it out. Once I laugh, I can usually move forward in a short time.
Thank you! You provide really valuable info abd tips. Looking forward to checking our your e-book
I love your coveralls could you let me know where you find them?
Great presentation, thank you for sharing!
thanks for the great video! one of my issue is composition and making paint marks that all don't look the same.
Do you have part 3 available yet? 💕 I’m from New Zealand
Thank you Andrea. Very pinpointed. Very precise. I use old bank cards, I love to spread paint with them. AS for lhe collage I love to press with my hands.
I just started an art channel recently! Please subscribe so I can grow my channel! ❤
With layers less is more more or less. It's mainly knowing when to say when time and time again.
Excellent information
Some very good pointers Andrea
I’m definitely struggling with colours and for me I would say I have a hard time toning the colours down in the right amount. How much white/black should I use etc and still get that feeling that I want from the painting. Guess studying colour theory is the way to go 🙈
I would like to take your course.
Thank you for a concise and informative video!
There are ONLY a handful of true abstract fine artists on the planet. Although many of the ideas mentioned here are indeed valuable, so called "abstract" art is nothing more than a waste of paint and canvas. If you are excellent at color theory, also known as color composition, as well as the other compositional elements needed for a piece, putting brush to canvas does NOT make you an artist. We need to stop the "trend" that everything is art, and everyone can be an artist. That simply is not true.
I love using wax paper, placing paint on paper, scribbling into paint with brush end or nail and placing it on your piece like a stamping effect. I got the idea from an abstract painter ‘the danish painter’ it’s become a favourite way to add texture and layers!
These are great techniques! Thanks for sharing!
I first heard of Novacolor sometime last year. As much as I'd love to try their paints, Novacolor doesn't list their pigments on their website or jars which for me is an immediate deal breaker. Any company not willing to share the pigment info isn't worth it for experienced artists in my opinion. Also your "wipe off" test is a bit confusing to me. Obviously there will be some difference between pigments, but there's no circumstance I can think of where an over application of paint would be accompanied by heavy scrubbing. As far as tinting goes that has a lot to do with which pigment is used not so much the quality of the paint
The wipe off test is for this reason: if you apply a new layer of paint and you want to remove it while wet, the underlying dry layer of paint does wipe off a bit in the less expensive paints. In my 30 years of experience, there are some brands that wipe off even when dry--Liquitex basics, Artist's Loft, and surprisingly, that Liquitex Professional quin magenta color I tried in the test. So perhaps in your work you don't wipe away wet paint ever, but I do all the time. Tinting has a lot to do with the quality of the paint. If you compare the tinting power of Golden vs. Artist's loft, you will find you need a lot less red in golden, for example, to make pink. I discuss these less expensive paints because some of my students need to use them due to finances. I hear you about Nova--you're not the only one who has mentioned that.
Very helpful, thanks!
You’re welcome!
I wish you would not perpetuate that myth. Oil paint doesn’t have fumes unless it’s a dirt cheap white. It’s the same pigments as acrylics (dirt) mixed with flax (linseed) oil. It’s the turps that have fumes and you don’t need them. Use walnut or artist’s safflower oil as your medium. Even the alkyd version does not have fumes and is not toxic. Store your, and clean your, brushes in grocery store safflower oil.
Thanks for the tips!
my computer tells me this is a year old, but I have to say, being a realism painter and a little scared to try abstract, I am so inspired after watching your tutorial. Thank you for sharing essential tips and advice. i cant wait to dive in.
That is wonderful to hear. I am glad the video could help you!
Thanks a lot! You are very talented and good teacher!
You are welcome! And thank you!
Oil paint color theory
What about it, friend?
Do you have an email or probably an Instagram soni can send you one of my painting so you can tell me if it is a strong abstract.
Yes, @santafepaintingworkshops
Andrea are the Blink paint good?
Yes, Blick is good! It's not the best, but I think it's better than Liquitex Basics.
Your first two colors are in your earrings 😊
I love that you noticed! It wasn't purposeful, though. How funny!
I would like to see a little bit of Sunrays peeking through the clouds that would brighten the flowers up ya
That's a great idea!
Ive been fan of abstract art with a desire to make my own. Some art talent here. My grandmother was a savant with art first time she picked up a brush. My mom created beautiful paintings. I did some above average 11 y/o Bob Ross art as a kid *lol* and actually, realistic sculpture comes naturally. Some art classes. Always wanted to make big canvas abstracts but worry about spending lots of $$ only to make mud. I believe it'll come intuitively as other art has to me. But I am going to take your generous offering and watch your other tutorials. Happy I found your channel! Thank you!! Excited to learn some basics before I waste too much on trial and error $$ lessons! I have always believed abstract was not "easy" like people imagine and takes much knowledge to create that mystery. Already formulating visions!! ❤
I am so glad to hear this, and I am happy you are going to start creating your visions!
Thank you soooo much for this! ❤ I want to start my own YT channel but I’m scared that I have too many creative ideas and things that I want to put into it. I’m going to write out a plan like you suggested and try to narrow down what the real purpose of my channel will be.
Wonderful! I am so glad this was helpful!
I agree Liked the painting better at various stages
That happens to me many times during a painting session. It's just part of the abstract painting process.
A few weeks after the class video- I got to try this. I ended up taking liberties or poetic license with the colors. It started out following your video but then added impressionistic trees! It is what it is!! Thanks for the video. I’ll use the concepts again, I know! Posting my piece next. The reference shot is Aspens along the road in Boulder county. ….. can’t add a photo here. I’ll try another way.
Penny thanks for emailing the image to me. It's amazing!
So that works out to about 7 cents for a watched hour ? I think they changed ad sense to 3000 hours and 500 subscribers to qualify ? I am not trying to become monetized, its just interesting to see how its all suppose to work. Thanks for sharing.
It depends on your industry. And I notice my amount has gone up and down. The 3000 hours is the first level of "monetization" where you can earn superthanks and start a paying membership through youtube. It's 4000 hours to earn from adsense. And I'm sure that will change down the line!
Great lesson. Your knowledge sharing is truly appreciated, ill follow you from here on. Thank you
Thank you! I am so glad you are finding it helpful.
I like to do a abstract painting , its nice to see it. Thank you.🎉🎉
My pleasure 😊
Thanks!
You are welcome. Thanks so much for the superthanks! It means a lot :)
I’m new but just to tell you that this painting reaches soul. It’s the softness, the complimentary colors and your technique with soft edges. I’m usually a bit difficult so consider me a student.
Thanks for saying that, and I am glad to have you as a student. I hope to do a part 3 and finish this painting (finally).
Just watched this series of three videos but there doesn’t seem to be a next one even though it’s now a year later! I am so invested in this paintings progress nowi, I need to see how it ends 😭
I hate to tell you, but I totally painted over it! So this one ends here. I have some other full painting classes you can check out though:)
@@andreacermanskipainting Haha, gutted but understand!
LOL!
Does it matter at which speed people watch the videos?
I'm not sure!
What a great question. It does seem like its how long and not how fast, This might just be a melt down for the youtube algorithm.
Totally. My guess would be it's more about the watch hours. So if you speed it up, it's how long it takes you to watch at the sped up level.
Thank you for this video. I normally use golden and a little liquitex. I have been thinking of trying Nova for larger projects. I may consider it.
Let me know what you think!
That was really useful, cheers 🤟
Glad it helped!
Do you think the Liquitex glass bead medium could be used to create twinkling stars in a nocturnal painting?
Absolutely! I think that would be great. I would lay down your sky first with the glass beads mixed in. Then let it dry, and very carefully dry brush with your star color.
This video is labeled "How to Paint an Easy Abstract Floral Scene" but is more about creating an abstract lanscape.
It’s a bit of both! I do many abstract floral landscapes.
Is there a part three to this, can’t find it but must see how the painting finished!
It's coming! Hopefully in the next few weeks:) I don't think I'll do it live so I can really focus and get it done.
@@andreacermanskipainting Brilliant, looking forward to it.
So much good information. Thank you. Would you consider making a video of you dry brushing over a painting you are not happy with. I'd love to see how you do this.
That is a great idea! I'll put it on the list!
Thanks so much Andrea!
You are welcome!
Andrea. I have been painting for 2 years and feel like I’m ready to start showing and selling my work. I am showing some of my work at local venues, but want to expand my audience. I am wondering what vehicles you use to show and sell your work. Thank you for reaching out to new artists.
Hi there, I show in galleries, on my website and in my home studio.
