I hear you. I don't resonate with a lot of it, too. I really like texture, color, and when a painting makes me stare at it for a long time. LOL. Thanks for your comment!
Hi Andrea! Thanks for the helpful videos. I'm a beginner artist who also lives in Santa Fe (near the Rose Park) and just stumbled upon your channel this week. I spent the past 31 years as a full-time mental health therapist and have found art to be incredibly healing. Right now, I'm trying to paint (something) every day and learn as much as I can. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and experience.
You are welcome. Love to see my local Santa Feans here. I bet I will run into you at Trader Joes, lol. Glad you are painting everyday-such a good practice!

Like all art, there is good, and bad. If a piece stirs emotions such as awe, happiness, sadness, or just appreciation for color scheme, or maybe imagination, and effort, to me, it would be good art, no matter what kind it is.
👍🏼 Kandinsky is a favorite ! Abstract art is hard. I am as green as grass when it comes to moving away from representational painting but skirt around the edge of those concepts trying a bit at a time. Good job of explaining. Let’s keep painting!
Wonderful! It is indeed hard--I discuss that a lot in the previous video I did. Will link next. I made the move from representational...it just takes some time and practice. It's such a different process! Glad you liked the video-here's one called "Abstract Art Mistakes You're Probably Making"--th-cam.com/video/JE3z40zorEo/w-d-xo.html

I think you'd want to imagine what that idea could look like and try to make that happen. You could try sketching it first, or using a digital art program.
This is a BIG question. So I think what I'm hearing is that you are struggling with how to transfer the idea from your head to the canvas. I think I might try a sketch first, and get the composition in. Then, I would start laying in the colors. I would also allow myself to depart from the original idea, because I like to flow with the process and see what emerges. For me, I like to play with colors and shapes and see what starts to come up. Some abstract artists do just throw paint on canvas and sell it for large amounts of money. Not my kind of abstract though. I love David Mankins style.
Great presentation, well that is until you put up work by Basquiat, given the fact that he worked at a frenetic pace often high on drugs and created graffiti on canvas, he seemed to have no purpose ART method merely a kinetic energy he could not control.
Well it's a good thing the purpose of this video (my original thoughts) was NOT to impress, but to educate. I am sure there are other resources out there that aren't so academic, so better to spend time there than my channel, because I can't help but be academic:)
Don't forget to like, subscribe & comment! Much love, my creative friends! 💖✨🖌
There is a great deal of abstract art that I find uninteresting and often unpleasant, but when it hits right for me, it's kind of magical.
I hear you. I don't resonate with a lot of it, too. I really like texture, color, and when a painting makes me stare at it for a long time. LOL. Thanks for your comment!
Great video, very informative. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!

Yes I agree. It's really about the viewer and what they like.
I would like to take your course.

I saw Blue Poles last year at the Canberra Art Gallery. So amazing, so much movement and depth
Wow, awesome! What was it like seeing it in person. I saw my first Basquiat in person a few months ago and I was so moved.
Andrea, love your teaching style.
Thanks so much! I appreciate the comment:)
Hi Andrea… thanks so much for this explanation. I’ve always tried to understand the concept but your explanation makes it very clear to
I also live in Santa Fe and look forward to meeting you someday.

This is an excellent video with educational information. I’m signing up for your e book now. Thank you so much for sharing,
You are welcome! Glad you will grab the Ebook. Transitioning slowly to abstraction helped me, so the 5 exercises allow you to do that:)

I paint abstract s that usually finish up landscapes as l let the paint trigger my thoughts
My abstracts often morph into abstract landscapes too:)
FOCUSING ON AN IDEA RATHER Than spontaneously putting paint on canvass is big challenge. What should the end result look like?
I think you'd want to imagine what that idea could look like and try to make that happen. You could try sketching it first, or using a digital art program.
How can I be able on painting abstract, to transfer my idea to the canvas?

“What is this abstract painting about?” Painting. “But, I mean, what’s it a painting of?” Paint. That’s my take. (I’m PRO abstraction, to be clear.)
Cool, so your abstracts are about paint?
Some abstract artists do just throw paint on canvas and sell it for large amounts of money. Not my kind of abstract though. I love David Mankins style.
Sure some do that in terms of process. Yes, his work is very nice!
I am not an artist my cousin, retired PHD art professor, agrees but titled me a colorist.😅
That's a good title to have! Color is challenging!
Great presentation, well that is until you put up work by Basquiat, given the fact that he worked at a frenetic pace often high on drugs and created graffiti on canvas, he seemed to have no purpose ART method merely a kinetic energy he could not control.
I don't agree. He was an incredibly talented artist in my opinion. But it's ok if we disagree!
@@andreacermanskipainting yes, we can disagree and be civil.
Thank you! That's rare these days :)
You’re reading an academic script….not impressed…..if I want a description or explanation of abstract art I can get the same script off the web.
There’s always an asshole in the comments section, you take the win @RiverWhisperPrd
