USS Voyager Build - 1:677 Scale - Part 4
I'm building a model of the USS Voyager in 1:670 scale.
In this video, I add some 3D printed customizations to the warp nacelles and pylons, and start assembling the secondary hull.

I Built a Miniature Warp Core
มุมมอง 5K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
I'm building a model of the warp core from the engineering set of Star Trek: The Next Generation, with animated lighting effects. The model is 3D printed in resin by me, and based on a design by an artist named CrazyJ. The model by CrazyJ was freely available on Thingiverse, under the name "Warp Core v2". I did my own custom lighting scheme different from the artist's original design. The model...

I recorded as I walked the showroom floor at the Rocky Mountain Hobby Expo on June 22, 2024. My camera recorded the sound of the event space air conditioner in an atrocious way, so I had to mute the actual audio. I didn't want the video to be completely silent, though, so I looped some generic ambient crowd noise. You won't miss anything if you choose to mute the video while you watch.

      Hi! The core I built is based on models by another artist, so I won't sell them. But, it looks like the original artist does offer printed parts for sale, including all the parts you need to light it! I didn't realize this when I recorded the video, otherwise I would have mentioned it. Here is a link to the artist's store page: www.etsy.com/shop/warpspeed3dprinting/?etsrc=sdt I case the link doesn't work, you should be able to find it by searching for WarpSpeed3DPrinting, and the shop owner's name is Jason Anderson.

      @@brianburgess7733 Thanks! An arduino or similar would be a great way to go, and was suggested by the original designer. Oh yeah, the TNG Enterprise-D Technical Manual is awesome. I was thinking of that when you were talking about images in the beginning, it shows you everything. This thing is awesome, i want one, have no (3D) printer and all that, not gonna happen, but i want one. You know, you should build a base with the railing along side it, with a hidden speaker in the bottom, and a button so you can turn it on and off. You have the Manual there so should be possible to model it if nobody has yet.

      Thank you! The El wire I've seen is probably too dim for what I wanted here. I also looked at some flexible LED filaments when I was brainstorming. The main challenges were finding the right color (ice blue or at least cool white that I could tint blue) and finding a length that would work. You can't cut the filament to the desired size, so you have to use what you're given. The filament diameter is also a bit large for this scale. If you scaled up the model, you might find a sweet spot where the filament length and diameter both work. Thanks for watching!

    A $5 Seeeduino Xia SAMD21 would run your LEDs and is the size of a postage stamp. Waaaay easier to program with the FastLED library than your DIY circuitboard. Of course if that DIY board was fun for you then more power to ya. Instead of masking off the rings, why not mask off the LED strip itself? A black sharpie and your straight edge oughta do it. The final result does look good, though. So how you did it probably doesn't matter too much :) Other than perhaps offering alternative ideas to other people who wanna try the same project.

    Really really cool! I have only one small comment about the blue bands, the transition from the first stack to the second is a little to abrupt. When the "pulse" goes through the dividing black ring, there should be a slight pause, or a dummy 6th LED to bridge that gap. I'm well aware I'm nitpicking here... Again it's a phenomenal build, the aluminium tape was a smart solution for getting those two bands per ring in there!

    • @mistakeman
      @mistakeman 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! Yeah, the skip over the black ring bothers me, too. I considered adding in the skipped 6th segment, but the decade counter chip has 10 outputs, just enough to drive the 10 pairs of lighted coil segments. Adding in the skip would have complicated the circuitry more than I was willing to do, so I accepted this compromise. No worries about the nitpick, I appreciate the comment.

    • @loopymind
      @loopymind 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mistakeman the limit of outputs makes sense :) you could in theory add a second astable 555 that is triggered by the 4017 to pause the first 555 for half a second, but that would, as you said complicate the circuit further :) again... Wow! Stunning work, the detail you’re putting into this is amazing. Thank you for sharing info’ about the STL’s on Ian’s website, he did some amazing work God rest his soul. Will be downloading them to have ready for my voyager build and re-watching your videos for inspiration. Can’t wait to see what you have done to the warp nacelles 👍

    An that cut (in the editing room, not the model) at 49:38 is true movie magic. Man, you sure know what you're doing!

      Can't wait for that coat of primer, showing that you indeed did an excellent job with your work. Very much looking forward to your next video.

      The coat of primer would have been the perfect ending for this video. Unfortunately, I just wasn't quite ready for it. It will be in the next video for sure. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    At 40:00 I was hoping you'd heard of or were going to use superglue debonder. I've never used the stuff myself but supposedly it exists and works well. (I believe Uncle Nightshift and his tank builds gave me that idea.) Other than that, amazing work as always. You're giving me so many great ideas I hope I'll be able to implement myself one fine day.

      Thank you. That's quite funny that you mention the debonder. I actually bought some recently to try it out, but it completely slipped my mind! I've never used it either, but this would have been the perfect opportunity to try. Oh well, I'll try to remember it next time.

      @@mistakeman Looking at your result, I'd say it worked like a charm. I figure part of modeling is knowing what you're doing. And a big part of my progress always is doing it, sort of like not knowing that I don't know how to, figuring it out on the way and thus getting it done, surprising myself.

      Acetone can be used for superglue...but it will also melt plastic so extreme care needed!

    This was one of the first models i bought and made, about 25years ago now. It was about £20-30, now i see this model going for £100+ on ebay etc!!!

      It was about 25 years ago that I bought this kit. It's wild how much these old kits can go for, now that they are hard to find.

    This is turning out great! It's really sad that Ian never got to finish his Voyager. I know it would have been epic like all his builds. I can't wait to get to my Voyager model. Its going to be a lot of work to get it accurate as you are already showing. I'm probably going to build a bunch of 3d printed replacement parts as well to help. Looking forward to seeing more, keep it up!

      Every time I visit his Voyager build log, it saddens me to know we will never get to see his final vision for this kit. Anyway, thanks for the feedback and the encouragement!
