This is a 40 minute video, but the issue is very simple, Latvians were original owners of this land, Russian invaded, imposed their own rules and language, Latvia managed to liberate, so we are back to Latvian. In medieval times some of these Russians would be outright killed. But now every branch is extended for them to adapt and integrate, but they still complain. Just learn the language of the nation and shut up, and be lucky you live in tolerant times and a tolerant nation. Because if Latvians decided to take revenge for terrible crimes committed by Russia, of which language you insist on speaking, tolerance and discrimination would be last of your problems.

I can understand the Russians in Latvia, because I am a minority person too (Hungarian from Slovakia). What is important to understand is that your nationality does not determine your political position. So calling someone a Putinist just because their mother tongue is Russian is bullshit. This is proven by the Russian people speaking in the video. However, there is a difference between natural (forced) minorities and artificial minorities. While the former became a minority by not stepping a foot but having the border pushed over his head, the latter is installed in a given territory by a given power. The latter is the Russian minority in Latvia, but as the new generations grow up they become more assimilated or integrated into Latvian society. Here, they are not being uprooted from the Russian motherland, but are being resettled in a 'colony'. Thus the Latvian state could do better to integrate its citizens of Russian descent rather than expel them. This goes hand in hand with the fact that there may not be the same cohesion among the Russian minority as there would be in the event of a Russian invasion of, say, Crimea. I assume that many Russians would fight under the Latvian flag if it were. And what absolutely disgusts me is that a language is banned or restricted in a country. This is just plain stupid. People shouldn't be blamed for using their mother tongue because they can't help speaking (in this case) Russian. However, I can also understand if someone in Latvia expects everyone to speak Latvian. But then you can also expect the state to teach it properly to all its citizens, whether they are native Latvian or Russian. Not knowing the state language can only be the responsibility of the state. Thus the perfect compromise is bilingualism. Of course, I also understand the Latvian people, because the Russians seem to them to be foreigners and invaders who have 'invaded' their country from nowhere. I suppose that the presence of a Russian minority could lead to Russia invading Latvia, but I don't think Putin is stupid enough to attack a NATO member state. The war in Afghanistan didn't turn into a world war, so I don't think Ukraine will either.

Where are jobs for people if population keep increasing? America is the same size as China, it has only three hundred and twenty millions people and US government has kept it steady in that way. If people can't find jobs, then there will be riots against government because people are unhappy and they will blame the CCP then there will be political unrest. Before you think of increasing population, you should think of where can you find jobs for the people. Look at what happens in Bangladesh, your next door neighbour - there are too many people but no jobs. A university graduate holding master degree but can't find job. This is a serious issue not a laughing matter😢.

The U.S. dollar hegemony is essentially unjust economic system. The U.S. and its allies (many of which are colonialists) have been exploiting economically the global south, and have been destabilizing any nation that threatens their interest. BRICS is a non-military alliance to address the unjust economic system. / The U.S. plan to bring in Ukraine into NATO was meant to destabilize Russia and balkanize it. / China has nothing to do with the conflict in Europe.

While being Latvian and fully support Latvian as only state language and the people in Shops MUST be able to speak Latvian, i don't see issues of Olgas stance of "let us speak Russian in our private life, listen to music an celebrate Russian holidays", the montage make it appear as she disagrees with the shop situation which is not technically so as shop is not private or family setting. So by ALL means DO speak Russian amongst your friends, family, eat Russian food, celebrate your holidays and listen to your songs just when conversation involved clearly non Russian, or in any official or cultural event switch to Latvian.

I am from Latvia, no one is forbidding celebration of Russian holidays here, no one is forbidding speaking Russian, the only thing is that Russian is no more a state language. The people who are saying that Russian is somehow persecuted here are lying. The woman from party Harmony is talking bullshit. Also if you live in Latvia, well you have to know the official language, imagine if I would whine in Russia that no one is speaking Latvian after I was there for a year, or in Great Britain I have to speak English. But here in Latvia oh no, an ethinc Russian suddenly have to know local language if he lives here, what a travesty.

I am the first Latvian-American in my family to be born in the USA. Both my Latvian parents met here after fleeing Latvia right before the Soviets began their long occupation near the end of WWII. I was raised to hate Russians because of what the Soviets did to Latvia, specifically to my relatives. However later, I realized even the Russians in Russia suffered under communism. I have been to Latvia 3 times, starting in 2008. I certainly experienced some Russian anti-Latvian behavior while in the capital Riga, but it was because I tried to speak basic Latvian to them, not realizing they were Russian at first. I have visited Russian-dominated Daugavpils in Southern Latvia twice, and met quite a few of my cousins who lived there. One thing that surprised me, was my LATVIAN cousins there did NOT speak Latvian, but RUSSIAN! I also was surprised to find out that Latvians and Russians get along rather well there, compared to most of the rest of Latvia. My Latvian cousins there also are much more supportive of Putin, believe it or not. I won't go into the reasons why, since I would write far too much for this post. Unlike many Latvian children in the USA,, I really was not taught my native tongue, other than learn a few basic words. It was not until about 2008, over age 50, when I first really tried to start learning Latvian. One thing that Latvians do not realize, is HOW HARD their language is to learn. Yes, it is fairly easy to learn if you constantly heard and spoke it from birth. I, along with other people who have studied foreign languages, all agree that Latvian is one of the toughest languages to learn in the world, MUCH harder than Russian. In all fairness, I can understand how difficult it must be for the Russians or any other non-Latvians to even learn basic Latvian. I am not saying that they should not try. But even in the USA, we have the problem with people from Latin countries (ex: Mexico) who come here, and because they are part of such a large ethnic group that all speak Spanish, they never bother learning any English. Because of this, as a Southern Californian, I probably know much more Spanish than Latvian, just to communicate with Latinos who live and work around me. As a Latvian-American, my biggest gripe with Russians who live in Latvia, even after the liberation of Latvia in the 90's, is their yearly celebrations of the Soviets "LIBERATING" Latvia from the Nazis, as if that was a GOOD thing. Not it was not. The Soviets treated the Latvians much worse than the Nazis, and continued to do so during their entire occupation. Ideally, I would like to see reparations made by Russia to Latvia and other countries they occupied, but that is probably something that will never occur. However, I would like to at least hear Russians in Latvia and at least Putin admit it was WRONG for the Soviets to have occupied, ruled over, imprisoned, killed, and deported so many Latvians. And at the risk of being hated more by my fellow Latvians, I think it was wrong for NATO to keep creeping up with its weapons right to Russia's borders, the latest move, right up to the borders of Russia in Ukraine, a country where the USA helped overthrow the duly elected President of Ukraine in 2014, leading to many other problems that provoked Russia into having to respond, and then have to fight a proxy war with the USA and UK through Ukrainian soldiers who have been sent over and over again into suicide missions against Russia, who has clearly been fighting a slow war of attrition that they have essentially one. Sadly, the insane leaders of the USA and Europe seem to want to stay in power at all costs, so they appear to be ready to go "scorched earth," and start WWIII. Fortunately, Putin has not responded with major force to provocations meant them to start WWIII. The USA has given Ukraine over ONE TRILLION US dollars to Ukraine, and our Congress voted against tracking where all that money went. Seems that much of it got laundered back to the USA. A friend of mine visits Monaco quite often (richest country per-capita), and he said that the biggest change in Monaco since the Ukraine war started, is that every third car license plate there is UKRAINIAN. One guess on where that money came from. Now that Ukraine has essentially lost against Russia, I have fears that NATO will send LATVIANS to Ukraine to fight this suicidal war. You might hate Trump, but I have reason to believe he will be able to put a stop to this ridiculous war.

As a latvian working in service indystry. This is prevalent problem. Where russian speaking customers have threatened me, cursed me for speaking in latvian. Even just so little as welcoming them in latvian, i have had russian woman curse me and belittle me infront of everyone. Maybe they have excuse for being old. But older people always have excuse for being old. 30 years ago when Latvia became independent somehow they didnt see the point. Only once over course of 5 years working in service i had one russian speaking person admit that she should learn language and she regrets not doing so, weirdly enough she was also the perosn who previously had said disgusting things like, wait until Putin comes here and fix everything...
