'Ständchen' Schubert Translation French Spanish English Dietrich Fischer Dieskau
One of the most beautiful songs ever composed
by Franz Schubert, in November 1828, in the last weeks of his life
Song by the wonderful, best German bariton ever, Dietrich Fischer Dieskau
This is not a light and breezy love song
The music is shot through with uncertainty and vulnerability, and it is this which makes is a superb Schubertian creation
The guitar-like plucked chords in the piano are the trembling heartbeat of the serenader. He makes tender entreaties at first, but passes through frustrated insistence to withered resignation,
longing and yearning for true love, but in the end unanswered
One of my most favorite classical songs ever

Both lived early 17th century but in totally different environments. They never knew each other, they never saw the work of the other, but still their revolutionary painting styles are very similar. A beautiful song from the Resistance in East Germany in the 1970s and 1980s. Singing songs like this was strictly forbidden in Eastern Germany and controlled by the secret police, the Stasi. But it is a beautiful song. About people struggling with the serious repression from the Stasi (Ministry of National Security). And desperately yearning for freedom. Yes, even as we listen to recording which I'm very thankful is here - and who knows how legal it is? - I don't understand why the poster would not tell us who is performing. Based on comments, I guess it's Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and, on piano, Alfred Brendel. If I spelled them right. >>> But the main thing I wanted to say - besides yes, this is absolutely beautiful - is to ask, how much of a miracle Brendel is? By many accounts he got little formal training after a fairly young age. 14? 16? And yet. But then probably about any pianist of his level, no matter what great amount of work and training they got, also had to be... a very, very specially gifted person. Thank you, Alfred.

Was soll ich länger weilen, Dass man mich trieb’ hinaus? Lass irre Hunde heulen Vor ihres Herren Haus!

Even tho he was apparently member of Hitler iugend during WWII, the difficulties experienced in that unimaginable time are drawn on & feed his interpretation well. I don't hear any harshness in his voice and I wouldn't call Brendel aggressive. This is Die Winterreise, one of the most depressing and emotionally raw pieces of music in the classical repertoire, it's not supposed to sound pure and pretty. You need a bit of rawness to make this piece work. There are lots of utterly boring performances of the Winterreise by singers who seem to think that this is just a collection of pretty little songs. If it doesn't hit you in the gut the performance has failed. Apart from the many Dieskau versions, my favorite is probably the wartime recording by the tenor Peter Anders and the pianist Michael Raucheisen. It's by far the rawest performance of the piece, probably because it was recorded in the spring of 1945 when Germany was on the brink of total collapse. It's so raw in fact that I sometimes find it hard to listen to. Peter Anders sings with so much intensity and pain, at times his voice breaks and it just sends shivers down your spine.
