Organize Your Magic The Gathering Collection

Are those the Dragon Shield resealable inners?
Ok fair… i guess it could have technically been thicker. Just regular inners on everything.
My first pre release event was duskmourn. It was very very fun, I translated the deck into modern and it’s been stompy as all hell. It’s an esper enchants/control deck
Raise your hand if you've gone from auction to auction seeking out old library card catalogs.
They're so cool! And so expensive... If you do go that direction though, just check the sizing carefully and make sure they don't have a sprung mechanism for holding the cards in place as it could damage your cards.
@@TheFirstJake Thanks for the heads up!
It was really "MTG: On Ice" back in '07 that got me hooked. And seeing "MTG of the Opera" in Toronto with the original cast (back in the late '90s) was a once in a lifetime event. But truly, it was "The Five Tenors of Magic" that took the world by storm. Seeing Luciano Pavarotti and Jace on stage together brought the audience to tears. All BS aside, we're talking about two companies (WotC and HASBRO). Both of which have dropped every ball imaginable. They seem to exist solely to boost secondary markets and third party merchandise. It's as if they are "afraid" to compete...and are somehow content to only sell licenses. The MTG website should be the go-to resource for ordering dice, play mats, card boxes, sleeves, etc. They are missing out on a fortune in sales. How many of us would buy a leatherbound official MTG rulebook? So if they can't even bring themselves to do that much, I highly doubt they'll ever have the ambition to branch out into the bigger media formats. It's a miracle they have Online and Arena. They just don't take themselves seriously. And recent years serve to not only support but prove that theory.
Your first paragraph is a work of art. Thank you for that. I also agree with your other points. I've never thought about owning a physical copy of the rulebook, but now I do kinda want a giant leather bound tome that includes the full comprehensive rulebook.
@@TheFirstJake Right? Why should D&D have all the fun?
That ending Weathlight song is banging!
Thanks! Now to just get the rights to make it real...
Ygo for the win
Love the franchise, the game is in a weird spot.
@TheFirstJake, to be honest, the game since its inception has always been in a weird spot
Ok…I’ll admit I started searching online for these…you got me…and my sub. Well played.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
I really hope this channel gets the subs that it deserves, and wish you nothing but luck going forward dude <3
I really appreciate the kind words.
Okay the theme song is stuck in my head. 😂😂😂 #myfavoriteshow
But seriously, a "villain of the week" style show leading up to the ultimate confrontation with Yawgmoth would be an amazing formula for a cartoon!
Funnily enough, I've been thinking about coming back in for like 1 commander deck, but I appreciate this video. It's always worth letting people know it's fine to fall out of love with something, you don't have to be a paypig forever cause you liked something maybe during a formative part of your life. Also, letting yourself step away from something is the most effectual way 1 person can influence the thing they step away from barring you being a big figure that can influence people.
Honestly just having 1 pet deck with some sort of transformational "maybeboard" should get you pretty far. I 100% agree with your sentiment about stepping away.
Underrated channel for sure
Thanks! I appreciate it.
Wait, there were Magic tv shows?...
Oh 😅...
;)
Yes, they actually all pieced together like transformers or power rangers into ONE MEGA BEING and are henceforth known as "Wizard of the Coast"
But seriously, pre-release is probably my favorite format of magic. Thanks for the video
Maybe a captain planet style transformation with the 5 colors of magic?
I like the idea of A 7 card sideboard like we had in best of one strixhaven standard.
That would be cool. I wonder if anything would have to be banned for it to work.
I've been procrastinating organising my paper cards. I have everything in mana box but need to organise them in paper because they've just turned into piles of cards. What I intend to do is to seperate cards into staples for commander and then by colour and primary card type. I used to keep staples and mythics in a folder but that's just impossible nowadays because I have too many cards.
Wish I had the memory and comprehension to know that kind of lore off hand based on the art, so cool
My first pack I ever opened was Tempest in 1999. Played from Urza block till Scourge before retiring in my late high school/college years. Picked it up again when Strixhaven was the new set. I feel like I still have a lot of catching up to do, haha 😅
When I open packs, I always enjoy looking at the art and reading the flavour text. It’s interesting to hear an artists take on the concepts and imagery of the cards, and what the artist is trying to portray. Great video.
I actually didn’t know about the allied & Enemy color pairs. Thank you!
Great booster :) too bad the Arena wasn't the foil one
Yeah… honestly I’ll take it. It goes great with my snuff out from the last video.
12:45 Yugioh does something like this too, depending on the "archetype". For example all Albaz/Branded/Despia/Bystial cards, and some more archetypes all share one long storyline where the monsters represent figures from the story and the spell and trap cards represent events. You also see the same characters throughout the story represented in different forms. It's a cool thing when they do that
Oh absolutely. One of my favorite things master duel did was narrativising the various story lines in the game.
I find brewing in Forge to be the easiest, and then I go through my bulk to see if I have what I need. After you've gathered enough cards, it's work enough just sorting them all by colour.
Lore impacting game design!!!!!!!
It’s the best!
I play casual and commander but I haven’t been keeping up on the newer sets, at one time I sorted out my standard in a 4,000 count box, but I sort by rarity, color and type, “instant, sorcery and creature type.” Each category sorted alphabetically. I use sticky notes on each box to indicate what is inside so as my collection increases I can mark and move things into new boxes.
I have two dungeon 550s, one for singleton formats and one for constructed. The constructed box is alphabetical by wubrg and the singleton is a mix of recent “by set” sections and by color for sets that are older and I do not have many of.
I use the big 5k boxes to sort bulk by set in chronological order at copies per card/max (though I really only play Commander, but love making a ton of decks so copies of certain cards come in handy). All the newer sets get put into the front of the first box. I also have a binder of all the higher dollar cards (cards I'd be hesitant to shuffle or aren't exactly "causal"). A box of Rares & Mythics, and a box of $1+ uncommons/commons. And binders that have ALL of my Legendary/Commander cards, as well as Planeswalkers, since I like to flip through them when I'm wanting to make another EDH deck. Everything is scanned into the Dragonshield app, and I use Archidect to build virtual decks using cards from my collection. When I'm happy with the deck, I download the .CSV then reorganize in Excel to match my box/binder system, and then pull. I used to separate standard legal cards by set, and the non standard cards by color and alphabetized creature/noncreature within the color, but found it took longer to add new cards into the colors (since I tend to buy booster boxes of newer sets and rarely ever get packs for older sets). And whenever sets phased out of Standard, it was a chore to fold them all into the nonstandard colors (I don't even PLAY Standard!) So I updated to my current system which works better for me!
I absolutely love the Jake and Ashley show ❤❤❤!
Thanks a lot! I appreciate it.
Your happiness comes across and is infectious!
Thanks!
Do you have any spare mtg arena codes to give away I would really appreciate it Thank you!!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays :)
Thanks a lot! Merry Christmas to you as well!
Hi there ! Great video ! And since you asked for people to shar how they maintain their collection, let me explain what's my take on the subject ! First of all let's talk a bit about what kind of player I am : I play Commander I'm beggining to try Cube and building them I sometimes play 60 card kitchen tables with young players in the family I make 95% of my building online using Scryfall so that I can immediatly archive them on Archideckt I've started playing in 2004 with some hiyatus So here's that, now the interesting part : I only keep maximum 4 copies of a card except for Commander staples and pet cards. Usually I only keep one if it's sort of a bad card. I have one binder with some pricey cards for trading + Cards I collect (specific frames/All Baldur's Gate character, etc.) And all the rest is kept like this : Rarity > Colors > Mana Value > Type > Set Rarity : I've got all my unused mythics in one box, my rares in 3 Big boxes, my Uncommons in 6, and my Commons in 6 too. Colors : Mythics and rares are separeted inside their boxes between WUBRG Artifact Multicolored (Ravnica > Alara > Tarkir) Land. Commons and Uncommons got 1 Box per color + 1 box with Artifact/Multicolored. Uncommon/Common Lands got their seperate box. Mana Value : Explains itself (X and 0 Cards first) Type :Every Types, LEgendary ones goes before regular ones : Planeswalker > Creature > Artifact Creature > Enchantement Creature > Artifact (Equipment > Mono Artifact) > Saga (and "vertical" Enchantements/Battle) > Enchantments > Aura > Instant > Sorcery Set: I strictly order cards dependeing on the set symbol on themselves and in chronoligcal order (last set first, Revised ones at the back). If I own the card in different set, I seperate them accordingly. Important note : I have 2 seperate collections of cards : The ones I use regularly (4 of each max, pretty organized in well made boxes) And the sameful bulk of unusable cards. I keep theme organized by Colors > Rarity > Mana Value > Type. I only keep them because I'm diving into Cube lately and the sorting of "what trash cards should I throw away" was made before that. So the bulk box may still have some unsuspected value. But it's very poorly organized compared to the playable cards ! I've started doing this exact sorting 10 years ago and never stop since. The first time it was a bti tedious but now it's a second nature. When I finish my prerelease I immediatly sort all my cards tis way so once I get home I can arrange them right away. And if I'm too bored/occupied to do som I keep the stack of cards on my desk, so next time I get the chance (by brewing a new deck for instance ?) the moment I go through those boxes I can take the pile and sort them in the mean time. Set Up Time : High Maintenance : Low/Average Searching Time : Low/Average
My collection is big enough but focused enough where i group by function, eg “tutors”, “removal”, etc. My biggest deck building bottleneck is staples. It’s kind of embarrassing how few decks I can field concurrently.
Color me jealous man I love that dragon frontiers tin. That set was my jam back in the day
Oh man looking back, I should have gone harder on pokemon. That was right when the rules started getting good.
I haven't seen this Un-set so it was a lot of fun to watch. The Steamflogger Boss story is so funny. I love it. I played a pre-release for Unhinged and it really was unhinged. People killing monsters they could see from their seat. Everyone's paranoid of what to say. Cheatyface was probably my favorite: trying to find ways to sneak it back into play.
Oh man unhinged was definitely a ridiculous environment. Lots of ass. I really think we need to bring silver borders into EDH. Looking for bracket 0 decks.
@@TheFirstJake Oh man. Silver-border EDH would be wild. I'd so play again for that. They really didn't half-ass the puns and silly art in that set. I loved it so much.
Im still mad for the fact they opened Steam Flogger Boss with no legal payoff. 😂😂😂
It's because he only does crime. Big illegal payoffs.
Fellas, if she looks at you like that buy a ring
Agreed.
The reality of managing a super large collection (three booster boxes of every set since revised) is that the commons and in commons beyond some just known staples have little value vs their sort difficulty. Dumping all of that chaff and picking up sub 1$ singles for as often as you actually need an uncommon from the dark or something really is worth while. It’s an epic feels bad when you first do it, but basically having all of your rares over 10$ by set color abc in binders, staples in a box like you’re talking about. It makes the sheer size of your collection manageable
Lmao somehow I knew what your advice on singles would be. Good think my weekend is free and my buddy's isn't
It’s the only way.
Amazing video! I'm stage one so this video is very useful :)
Thank you so much! Welcome to the hobby. Out of curiosity, was it the Doctor Who Universes Beyond products that got you into Magic?
Alright, I love the video but I am struggling to find a good way to sort cards.. started 3 years ago and really jumped in.. my friend who got me into it gave me about 30,000 cards randomly and since then I have about 100,000 or so and I have sorted by color and card type but still struggling to find cards since there’s so much .. any tips? I only play commander I used to buy a bundle and a full booster box every set but now I only buy singles for specific decks since I get overwhelmed with all my bulk. Is there a point in saving all the uncommons and commons?
Lots of commons and uncommons are super useful, but really if you’re not using them, they might not be worth keeping. I have a “deep storage” box with tens of thousands of cards that i only delve into if I’m trying to do something really weird.
@ thanks that’s a good idea maybe I’ll just call it a bulk bin and put them into that unless it’s like a super useful card I don’t really have a use for it
I have adhd. A plastic bag in the best I can do
Don't forget the rubber band!
i am glad that i started organizing early on. my way is first by colour, then cmc, then alphabetically. this way, i bank about what can fit in a booster box, take a few days on/off sorting them into my actual collection, and i can find cards very fast, even though i haven't digitized my collection. it took an ungodly amount of time to set up, but the upkeep is nice and chill, and i can always find my needed cards
I’ve been playing magic since 1996, from JSS to the pro tour; I’ve never heard of commander until 2021. My LGS is the largest in my part of the state, producing a dozen pro tour competitors. It’s been open since 2000. 2021 is when I found the format. Your information is incorrect.
I started playing in Fall of 2011, and I didn't even know about commander until 2020ish. I was definitely a "Kitchen Table" player. Whenever I see a Rune-scarred Demon, I get insane nostalgia.
That's awesome. I wish casual 60 card magic was more common today, but I do very much enjoy playing commander. What is your favorite Kitchen Table brew that you've come up with?
