The Shining (1980) | Jack Chases Wendy
Aspiring author Jack Torrance chases his wife Wendy around the grounds of the Overlook Hotel.
Stanley Kubrick considered Jack Nicholson for the role of Torrance from the start. The two had met a few years earlier, when Kubrick wanted him to star in his film Napoleon. Kubrick told movie critic Michel Ciment that he considered Nicholson to be "one of the best actors in Hollywood."
Nicholson's portrayal of Jack Torrance was rated number 25 on American Film Institute's 100 greatest screen villains.
The Shining was released in cinemas worldwide in 1980 by Warner Bros. Pictures and is available to buy on DVD, Blu-ray, 4K & digital download.

Loved the show, an audacious and brilliantly executed reading of a much loved movie. Coogan was outstanding in the four roles (one more than Sellars), wisely making his own mark on each of the characters without attempting a Sellars tribute impression. To pull off the quick changes and make it look so seamless is a triumph, full marks to the production team as well as Coogan himself. Standout supporting parts in the Ripper and Faceman characters, a great ensemble piece across the board. Stunning sets, including the jaw-dropping B-52 cockpit and of course the War Room. A palpable tension as the audience awaited the famous line, something akin to Lady Bracknell’s ‘handbag’ uttering, it got the laugh it deserved among many more along the way. Absurd, silly, topically resonant and very scary - I hope this cleverly written and beautifully executed show really flies. 🎭

I'm only in the first 100 pages of the book and it's got me completely hooked. I immediately grew a certain fondness for Dick Hallorann in a way the film was unable to do for me. He's likeable in the film too, but you feel a stronger connection to him in the book. It makes knowing what happens to him much more painful.

The problem I have always had is that Jack’s character was going insane before he ever left home. He just got more insane and Nicholson’s performance was too over-the-top. But the fact it was filmed in England is a shocker.

It would be interesting if they remade the film identically but using footage that was not selected. It would be the same movie but everything is slightly different. Obviously it wouldn't be as good, but it would be so interesting !

Id still like to know how they got that still shot of the timberline lodge with mt hood visible behind it. I stayed there a week ago and its impossible to get that photo. The hotel obscures the mountain. It looks like its a ground shot but its got to be a still from the helicopter footage.

Ive found and visited a few filming locations over the years. Its always a special feeling to stand somewhere by yourself that was where a famous scene was shot. You cant help but envision all the people, crew, equipment that was once there, and now youre there and have it to yourself. You could see the participants in this documentary felt that too.
