I know. It is insane seeing that pantry room with those shelves still there. It is like stepping back in time. It gave me a lump in my throat to see that.
I got choked up watching this too. That pantry room with the shelves still there is like going back in time. The same with the loading dock that was the boiler room set. Unbelievable.
Pretty amazing that the original shelving is still just sitting there in the storage room. Almost as if it's been waiting there for 45 years for them to come and visit, and for all of us to remember.
That building is like an Overlook hotel all of its own. Filled with the ghosts of the kitchen and boiler room sets. Like they have always been there. And waiting for us.
The music, the cinematography, the attention to detail in the set and costume, the mystery, the direction and acting performances -- one of the greatest masterpieces in film history.
This should be included in future reissues of THE SHINING on UHD and Blu-ray. I've been waiting a month for this thing to drop. Dude, the tours of this facility could rake in quite some extra dough for the lot.
When Shelley Duvall goes around the corner out of the boiling room and you can clearly see the (sliding) doors still being the exact same ones. It is just surreal to me. I love "The Shining", it might just be my favourite movie. Thank you for this documentary
Katherina to see us share a memory, although different ways, it was your kitchen table, from across the pond here in KY is amazing. Shining is nostaligic for me. Bless you and tell your mother thank you for her art as well. Shes also a blessing. Take care.
She has her arm wrapped around his as well. You hear much of the psychological trauma the filming of The Shining caused Shelley Duvall, but she still referred to Stanley Kubrick as "warm and friendly" years later.
Absolutely brilliant little documentary. This building should be given a listed status and protected at all costs. Whilst it looks like nothing from the outside, it contains some of the most treasured and iconic horror cinema locations. The story of the carpet in the shed is bonkers and should be in a museum along with the bath and tables!
Excellent feature documetary, my Mom watched The Shining when it came out, she has loved the film ever since, never forgot about iconic elements such as Jack Nicholson' stellar performance, Danny's trycicle or the rooms, when I told her that the film was made on set, she couldn't believe it. I think Kubrick and his team managed to create a movie with an atmosphere that it's not only uneerving (liminal spaces) but also nostalgic, nostalgia for a time we never lived, the 1920s (also the 1980s in my case). Love to hear the crew theorizing about the movie, wether the ghosts are real or not.
The skills of these artisans are mind boggling. The real hotel that inspired the interior design is still there in Yosemite. It looks much like the movie.
This was a real treat. The Shining is one of the very best movies. A masterpiece. To know that there are still parts of the set and prop still in existence, it to know The Shining lives on. This was simply a gift. Thank you.
Loved the in depth look on the kitchen! I really hope they keep this place safe for history. Great documentary! Such a treat to have this one come out now! Will always be my favorite horror movie. Rip Shelly Duvall, Stanley Kubrick and Scatman Crothers!
Been looking forward to this for weeks. Did not disappoint. What a one-of-a-kind genius Kubrick was. RIP Mr. Stanley Kubrick, Ms. Shelley Duvall and Mr. Scatman Crothers.
Thank you for graciously including Mr. Carothers. He is gem 💎 and a legendary entertainer who is usually unrecognized in all of the surface level "rest in piece" 🧩 expressions. 😶😔🤨
Love seeing a documentary on my favorite horror film of all time. It's sad that most of the buildings that housed the movie's set are gone, but at least one of them still remains. It was also really nice to have that dedication to Shelly at the end of it. RIP Stanley, you made a horrifying masterpiece. RIP Scatman, you created some wonderful memories for Danny Lloyd. RIP Shelly, despite the harrowing experience from working on The Shining, you gave one hell of a performance.
Wow, this is absolutely incredible! Let's hope this building is kept and converted into a museum. The kitchen scenes were arguably the most pivotal, at least up there, and the fact that this building housed the kitchen is just fascinating.
You did a great job. I loved the 3D model of the film studio, and the perfectly matched shots including the precise camera movement. And the trio walking through the space, commenting on things was just adorable.
Stanley and the actors had to do a hundred takes, and then Stanley had to sift through them all when he edited the movie. Astounding commitment to the craft.
Fantastic! A great way to remember Stanley Kubrick on his birthdate. What a brain-warp of a trip to take, seeing the locations then and now...how they were then, and how they are now. It would be unreal to actually walk through all of that, trying to visualize yourself in the movie and guessing which location hosted a certain scene. Also, I got a little teary at the end, with the then-and-now crossfades, especially when Shelley Duvall says "'I'm a Wendy!", fading into an echo. (I got the 500th "like", by the way!)
I'm glad to see this spot is still around and mostly still the same as it was when it had been used in the film. Thank you for uploading this. Rest in Peace Mr. Kubrick and Ms. Duvall. Y'all are both missed.
Love this doc. The film set for The Shining has always fascinated me. How wonderful that parts of the set still exist (in their mundane ways). This doc showcases this very well.
Ive found and visited a few filming locations over the years. Its always a special feeling to stand somewhere by yourself that was where a famous scene was shot. You cant help but envision all the people, crew, equipment that was once there, and now youre there and have it to yourself. You could see the participants in this documentary felt that too.
Thank you Stanley Kubrick for amazing wonderful mind, and thank you for leaving us clues, especially after the film EYES WIDE SHUT, now our eyes are finally WIDE OPEN!!! God bless Stanley Kubrick you LEGEND ❤️x
Magical " yet bitter sweet having Lost people and knowing how much time has passed! Like Stanley and Shelley we all shall one day have our end credit's Roll"!👍🙏👍🎭👍🎭👍🎭👍🎭👍
Awesome. The pantry area looks exactly the same minus the tinned goods. As a huge shining fan this was a rare treat I also loved the boiler room area, the vibe is still very much there, brilliant.
Thank you for a publishing this super documentary.I loved every second of it. I'm not sure where it is currently , but I strongly recommend visiting the Kubrick exhibition. I saw it at the london design museum a few years ago and it is truly tremendous. The range of artefacts from all of kubrick's films is extraordinary, and the book that accompanies it is well worth purchasing.
Good memories, good actors, good workers and a good film.Thank you Stanley, thank you for bringing this book, this story, to the life. And rest in peace, Shelly... ~Midnight, Stars and You~
Great work Paul King! Really enjoyed it. I worked at Elstree for a number of years on various films in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Nice to see the place again - I live in Sydney now - miss the place. Love the studio. Pinewood is great too, as is Leavesden - but there's something magical about Elstree...
I always go back to the same three horror movies every couple of years or so, The ring, Rosemarys baby and The Shining. Their influence on my life and my way of seeing things is so special, also every detail in this movies is fantastic. But the most important thing for me is the performances, Naomi Watts, Mia farrow and Shelley Duvall remain my favorite actresses. Thank you so much for this, it’s adds another layer to a great film, and I would totally tour the kitchen and the pantry if they set dress it btw 😮
Wow! The food pantry still has the original shelving in it? Really amazing! So for 45 years, what has that room been used for?? This is perplexing! Evidently the shelving was never in the way of other uses for that room all through the years - - how fortunate. And since the shelving was surely constructed inside that room, it could not simply be conveniently dragged out :)
Oh, I love this so , so much ! Just knowing that the original crew recognized the exact filming locstions in that building made my day ! Question for anyone that knows the answer for sure, no guessing please, lol. Was ANY actual fimling taken place at the ACTUAL Stanely Hotel ? I know not on the inside , Im just inquiring about the outside shots. Thanks for any help.
I considered Kubrick one of the greatest filmmaker ever, and have some of his movies in BD, including the shining, even saw it when it was released in 1980, I have to pick ten top horror movies, the shining would be in the top five, and I do believe this is by far J Nicholson best performance ever, and Shelley D best too, RIP Shelley and Stanley, thank you for big contributions to cinema history
Splendid film that stirs memories of when I first saw The Shining on the day it opened in Los Angeles. I won’t say more here about the scene in the hospital that was removed after it ran through the gate just a few times. Legend is Stanley ordered it physically cut out of the last reel in the projection room of each of the theaters that housed a print and those trims destroyed. Katharina Kubrick gives a hint of something about those frames when she says in this documentary that she won’t go on with what’s on her mind. It would be meaningful to see that scene again with the dialogue that Mr. Ullman and Wendy exchange, and from what I remember culminates with five words before the scene closes, and the film returns to the Overlook Hotel revealing the photo on the wall which remains in the current cut.
There is a video here that tries to recreate the scene with the surviving photos but using AI to make the bodies move and characters talk, it's not perfect, but it's the closest I have seen that ending come to live.
The fact the pantry shelves still exist is pretty incredible.
I know. It is insane seeing that pantry room with those shelves still there. It is like stepping back in time. It gave me a lump in my throat to see that.
That place should be made into a museum.
Temple of Doom, The original Star Wars, Labyrinth and Dark Crystal was also filmed in the exact same spot
Agreed.
100%
Oh God yeah, preserved completely before anything else changes
@@AndyLeo Absolutely. I would love to spend a night in that storage room! 😂
I felt like crying because I grew up in the Overlook having watched it so many times with my dad and brother. RIP dad.

Pretty amazing that the original shelving is still just sitting there in the storage room. Almost as if it's been waiting there for 45 years for them to come and visit, and for all of us to remember.
if we could see all the walls of the room then one or two theories of how jack got out would be answered, i.e. was there anotherdoor

They are legends by now ❤
And Joe Turkel.
This place should be dressed up and turned into a place every fan could visit I really enjoyed this
God Bless Shelley Duvall. This is my all time favorite film, hands down! RIP Shelley and Stanley.
Also my favorite
This video is gold…tribute to the Maestro Stanley 🙌🏻

Such a beautiful choice to use a pic of Stanley and Shelley at the end. Stanley smiling at her and all... ❤ Thanks for this, guys.
The only thing that was a bit odd was that it was the two of them, and they only said in memory of Shelley! He's dead too 😅😅
@@DanielStormBut Kubrick passed away 25 years ago. Shelley Duvall was only a few weeks ago. I think it was very relevant and a nice touch.
