Who are the individuals performing these behaviors? I'm an American and if you were anywhere in America and called your waiter/waitress "boy" or "girl" and snapped your fingers, the outcome of that interaction would not be positive. I do agree, alcohol does play a role in jackass behavior, but that's the exception, not the norm. I was both a waitress and a bartender in college and most patrons where nice. Only had the occasional jerk who upon the addition of alcohol became a bigger jerk, but those people where asked to leave.

Some years ago, we went to New Caledonia for holiday. One day we were sitting in a restaurant. Two Australian ladies some meters away. We saw a discussion between the two and the waiter, obviously he did not understand what they wanted. The people there speak English, since Australia is the only country "close" by. He returned with his boss, the discussion continued and we saw the waiter returnung with ice cubes which the ladies then put in the white wine. Always feels good to come from a continent with culture.

Except "Bonjour" and the kissing it's the same in Germany. ..or the whole of Europe? A question that has not been answered, when do you lave after dinner? In Germany it would be very inpolite if you leave immediately. If you don't know, leave, when the other guests leave or when the hosts start yawning or start going to bed.

As a Frenchman, I can say that all that advice is quite accurate. Thank you for your video which promotes our French culture so well. I would just like to add a couple of details : Don't be surprised by the seemingly astronomical price of a bottle of wine in a restaurant, which will cost you 5 to 10 times more than in a shop : it is customary for restaurants in France to keep the price of food as low as possible and to make up their profit on the price of wine. Just another detail about starters : a "salade composée" may come in 2 formats, in a smaller bowl as an "entrée" (as a strarter) or in a larger bowl as a "plat principal", which is a handy way of sticking to a diet while enjoying a meal in a restaurant. Just remember to tell the waiter which one you want when ordering your menu. I especially enjoy "salade Lyonnaise" (with egg, lardons and croutons), and the "salade Grenobloise". Et félicitations pour votre excellent Anglais ! Christophe

Lol I am a second generation french immigrant and when I was young, my family had to have a Talk to my american relatives at thanksgiving because they were cutting their cheese in such a horrible way. Now every year, we jokingly all remind each other “Don’t behead the triangle!” to encourage everyone to cut the cheese correctly. In college, I have had a lot of practice in giving “The Talk” but it’s sometimes so difficult to explain to americans that it’s selfish to cut cheese in such a way that we all don’t taste the same tastes. “I’m not being rude, YOU’RE being rude” an endless cycle 🥲

I loved it when you said that one should not bring food when invited. It's so obvious. But you can bring a special culinary product, for example, to introduce it to your host. But you're right, you shouldn't bring 'food,' but bringing something to drink is welcome...

It may be obvious to a French person, but in America we're taught to "not come empty-handed" meaning to bring something to contribute or something to say thank you. It would probably be rude to just bring something food wise, so people do typically ask in advance if they can "bring" anything, and the host may say, a side or dessert, or drinks, but in the US it's polite and considered thoughtful to at least "offer" in most regions. It also depends on the relationship and formal vs informal setting (more formal, less likely to ask, informal, more likely to ask). Though, flowers or something is also a welcome thank you. Just saying, it is helpful she mentioned this for US visitors at least.

@@KKST23 if it is a bottle of wine it is not necessarily necessary to ask for it before bringing it, however you must give it when you arrive to drink it together at the table It is very rude not to share a bottle of wine that someone brings as a gift, the only exception would be when there is everyone bringing a bottle of wine and there is too much (and I can assure that it can happen at family dinners)
