  • The French National Day on 14 of July is often called Bastille Day. However, that is not the proper name for the Fête Nationale in France. Discover the history of this holiday and what the true Bastille was? Learn more about the French revolution and the different celebration happening on the 14th of July.       Several websites state that the fireworks will begin around 11pm France time. That is around 2pm California time.

    en réalité, il n'est pas précisé quel 14 juillet on célèbre, c'était plus une affaire d'interprétation. En 1880, la droite préférait voir le 14 juillet comme la fête de la Fédération, plus calme, rassemblant l'unité avant les évènements plus violents. Pour la gauche, le 14 juillet représente plus le prise de la Bastille avec la fin de l'absolutisme et l'action du peuple.

      Merci beaucoup pour cette précision qui est en effet importante. Le texte de loi est volontairement ambigu afin de satisfaire le plus grand nombre. Cependant, le procès verbal lors de la proposition de la date du 14 juillet comme fête nationale précise bien que c’est la fête de la fédération que le législateur a souhaité honorer. En tout cas, parler simplement de « Bastille day » simplifie cette date importante et efface la volonté d’union pacifique qui prévalait dans le choix de cette date symbolique

    Yes it is! It commemorates the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, symbol of the end of the absolute monarchy, as well as the Federation Day of 1793, symbol of the union of the Nation. It is instituted by the Raspail law of July 6, 1880, which does not mention which event is commemorated: The Republic adopts July 14 as an annual national day,

      Bonjour, as I am saying in the video, the law itself is purposefully unclear as to please the vast majority at the time. However, in the minute of the Assembly from the voting of this law, the legislators make it clear they are choosing the 14th of July as a symbol of the Federation Day
