Hey Rick, I had a chance to check this out again without listening while driving. Not a good idea for a video that requires you seeing the cards. Though, I can picture them in my mind. When Charlie Gehringer and Reggie’s rookie are your honorable mentions, you know it is going to be good. I always love to see the Lasorda rookie. The yellow on that card with the blue cap just captures the era perfectly. I have come to appreciate the black and white full body image too. The Mantle/Berra card is a beauty. I agree with you on the 57 set. I still need to get that one. The 69 Bench is a fantastic card. My favorite of his will always be the 1976. The Bobby Doerr PlayBall is a stunning card with the background. The 50 Bowman Bob Feller is the card I would own if I could only have one of his. As I mentioned in my text, you really do have an awesome collection. What I like most is that I can hear the passion for your cards when you talk about them. You know why you have them in your collecting and even remember when you bought many of them. I really enjoyed this.
Enjoyed the first 30 Rick!
Great list; I love all the Play Ball cards.
thanks Mitchell. Play Ball , Diamond Stars and Goudey are all amazing cards.
I m joining that club too in July Happy Birthday Rick ❤ Grest video
Thank you! I am glad I am not joining the club alone.
Hey Rick…Happy Birthday! I join you at 60 later this year. My birthday wish…More Dodgers Championships please! What great cards you have! What I love about your videos is that even as a lifetime Dodgers fan I learn about new Dodgers from seeing your cards. You have the most diverse Dodger card collection I’ve seen. Had not heard of Jake Talbert, Bart Shirley or Kirby Higbe until now. That 1957 Dodgers Sluggers card is one of my favorites. Stay safe down there and looking forward to seeing the next 30 cards. 👍
Hey Todd! I am learning a lot of people are joining me in the 60 club. At least I am not alone. Yes, more Dodger Championships please. I can't get enough of them. I am still watching the WS highlights all the time. I am glad we have the Dodgers in common. I have loved them since I was six. Bart Shirley, SMH. The man cost me a lot of money. HAHAHA. Lots more Dodgers in the next 30. Have a great weekend, Todd!
Beautiful cards.
Thank you, Peter!
Happy Birthday, thank you for sharing your collection
Thank you, Orlando!
What a packed video! The card countdown......and you have shown some awesome cards......your 60th birthday!......I eagerly await the top 30, and hope you have celebrated this momentous day. Take good care!
Awww thanks Chuck! I really appreciate your kind words.
Beautiful run Rick. So many great cards. I love it
Thank you, Drew!
Happy Birthday! Welcome to the old fart 60 club. Love the Collins and Wheat card! Heck, love them all. Hope you have a great weekend
Thank you, Rick! I look forward to being in the same club as you!
Welcome to the 60 club-- I just got there as well. We must have started buying cards the same year-- age 8, 1973. A fun watch! Prayers are out for all you enduring the fires, hope the rain comes hard!!!
April of 1973 I was buying wax from the GGG Liquor store. What a monumental time that was! Thanks so much for the kind words!!
Happy birthday my friend. Cheers for another year of health and happiness and cards of course
Thank you, Edison. I hope to see you in Ontario in a couple of weeks and catch up!
First hope you are doing well through the horrific tragic California fires. My heart is with all of you in Los Angeles. Happy 60th and many more. You have 17 more years to go to be where I am. Thanks for the great Movie recommendation Chasing 3000 watched right after your video. Love your choices in your top 60 collection. Great cards! Dodgers should be incredible this year with the money they spent. What a team. Stay well and looking forward to your final 30.
Hi Larry! Thank you! It's kinda crazy out here. I am glad you enjoyed the movie! It's a nice story. I hope the next baseball season is as good as last year. Who is your team? Thanks so much for watching!
I grew up in St. Louis and my collecting started with the Cardinals back in the 80s.. Stan Musial was my favorite, I went to his last game when I was 15 and have brick at Musial plaza at the stadium Just got a Musial used bat from 1952. But I lived in Colorado for 47 years had season tickets with the Rockies. Moved to Northern Virginia couple of years ago be close to my son. I am sort of a hoarder collect cards, game used bats, WS program, autographs, pins etc By the way saw Jackie Robinson play with the Dodgers in 1955, Newcombe pitched beat the Cardinals 9 to 1. Love the hobby and enjoy your channel.
Happy 60th Rick! Great showcase. The logo not being on the hat is the reason I haven't picked up the Campy rookie 😅
Thanks Jesse! LOL on the Campy. That's a legit reason IMO.
Happy 60th and great run down. Looking forward to the next installment.
Thanks Alan! I am looking forward to your next video!
Great cards Rick, many of them on my want list.
Thanks Mike! You can buy them all in Ontario in three weeks! I look forward to seeing you!
@@RickAcostaDodgerCardCollector Well there goes my budget. LOL
Welcome to the world of us geezerheads! I think you'll find that being an old guy gives you more freedom and flexibility in many milieus. I don't know if I've mentioned this previously, but I've got a soft spot for the Chiefs because one of my most memorable students, back when I was substituting, was a distant relative of Patrick Mahomes.
I am now a geezerhead? HAHAHA I did tell two kids to get off my lawn and go play somewhere else a few weeks ago. HAHAHA. I didn't know the Patrick Mahommes story. I love it. I actually like the Chiefs. They don't annoy me like they do everyone else. Thanks for watching, Michael!
Some nice nice cards there. Thanks for sharing Rick!
Thank you, CK!
HAPPY birthday rick. Hope they get those fires under control soon. The roberto clemente movie sounds good. I will be 61 this may i dont know where the time went so hang in there its just a number. Can you believe Anthony rizzo and pete alonzo havent been picked up yet. Next month pitchers and catchers go back. Great video. How about them buckeyes !! Love the johnny bench card. Take care. Ken
Thank you, Ken! Luckily all the fires I discussed in my video were put out quickly. Let me know what you think of the Clemante movie. I agree, I don't know where the time has gone. I think Alonzo signs soon, Rizzo I am not sure where he'll play. I am looking forward to Spring training. Thanks again for watching!
Hello my friend
And hello to you!
have you ever thought about putting together the "master " set of these? if so here are some variations you may or may not know about. we'll cover the cubs cards first. #18, #29, #45, #117 and #534 all have a variation that has green under the c and s in the word cubs on the top of the cards corrected would be yellow. #216 joe niekro has a type-o on the back in between his height their is a line, correct will not have the line. checklist #3, and #5 both have larger print for players names that make the names closer to the orange line on the bottom of the card, the other version has a gap between the names and orange line. #378 has 2 versions that have different asterisks one will have 8 pointed and the other will have a 5 pointed asterisk. #604 the back has a copyright on the bottom left and the other has it on the bottom right.
@@boomslang024 I am not a master set builder but admire people who collect them. That's a decent list of variations. Thank you for this in case I choose to go this route.
my goal as a set builder is to put together topps sets from my birth year 1959 to the current year.
@@boomslang024 that's a great goal. How are you doing it putting it all together?
cool video, new subscriber here , look forward for more....
Thank you for subscribing. I hope you enjoy the channel. What do you collect?
@ mostly baseball since the 70’s but in the 70’s I collected the 4 sports. And since jan. of this year I’ve started selling on eBay clearing out some of my more than 4.5 million cards
@ what's your eBay username so I can look you up?
@@RickAcostaDodgerCardCollector my store is Boom's card warehouse.
Sorry about the Rams, Rick. It got nerve racking at the end.
Sigh it was a tough loss. At least they went down fighting.
Glad you are doing okay through the fires, Rick. I grew up in Pasadena and several people I know have been impacted. Praying for all of you. On the positive note, great share of your cards. Some real beauties. Love the stories! The Fatima card, wow!
Thank you, Rob! Yeah, I was in Pasadena last week and you can still smell the smoke. A lot of devastation up there. It's very sad. Thank you for watching my card video. I got lucky on the Fatima card!
Hey Rick, I am glad to hear you’re still okay. I wasn’t sure if the air quality was impacting you. I was happy to see the Rams win and will be pulling for them today. The hobby is a nice way to relax and break away from the stresses of the world. I find myself staring a my card cases occasionally when working at home just to decompress for a few minutes. It is a way to drift back to simpler times for a moment. I enjoyed this look into players you don’t hear from often. I wasn’t aware of Tommy Brown’s age. That is amazing to be able to hit major league pitching at such a young age. Love the 52 Shantz card. I still need to add a card of his and that may be the one. I didn’t realize you had the Uecker rookie. Collecting Dodgers team sets gets you some nice rookies. I always liked that Snider card. He always looked a little older due having gray hair early on but his hair is white on the 64. Fisk has some of the best cards. The 77 is my favorite but 74 is my second favorite. I like his 91 Topps too. Beautiful Kaline. I love the colors. Thanks for sharing, my friend.
Hey Terry! I was in the burn area on Saturday. Still smells like smoke. It's just crazy out here. I was hoping the Rams would beat the Eagles, but just too many long plays their defense allowed. I think the Bills beat the Chiefs on Sunday. Tommy Brown must have been in the majors only cause of the war. 15 years old is just way too young to be in the MLB. The 1952 Shantz was a must for me because he won the MVP that year and the card was featured on the 1975 Topps MVP subset. The first 52 card I bought as a kid. I still love that card. The best rule I implemented when I built the Dodger team sets was saying if there is a Dodger on the card, I had to buy it. Because of that I bought league leaders, checklists, World Series, combo cards, rookie cards, etc... It meant buying extra cards but it just added to my collection at the time. When I first started building Dodger sets, I had no plans of rebuilding old sets or buying HOF graded cards so my attitude was this will allow me to add some great cards to my collection. Man, the 1977 Fisk. I forgot about that card! Another great card!! I think that's Willie Randolph sliding in. I need to look up 91. Thanks for checking on me, Terry and thanks for watching!
Hey Rick… Great to see you are doing well with all the fires going on down there. Can’t believe what I’m seeing on TV of the devastation. Thanks for sharing your cards. That 1913 Brooklyn national cards is very cool and I love the story about Papa Maxwell. Thanks, Rick.
Hi Todd! Thanks for your kind words. It's just crazy out here still. Papa Maxwell was an interesting player. Love the Fatima. Thanks again for watching, Todd.
I glad your safe. Thanks for the video 😊
Thank you, Bob and thank you for watching!
Golden Stamps put out some memorable issues. Who knew they would rise so much in value? I had the Hall of Fame set but traded it away in the 1970s. And how many people remember Preacher Roe was with the Pirates? I sure forgot. By the way, Baseball Reference first lists the Dodgers as the official team nickname from 1911-1915, then resuming in 1932.
I got this Golden Stamps for cheap from some guy on Facebook. Crazy! I forgot Roe was on the Pirates. I think he also played for the Orioles his last year. I love Baseball Reference. I spend way too much time on there. hahahaha
Rick- Glad to know you are doing ok. I am sorry to hear about all the heartbreak in CA. Stay safe and thank you for the video. Great stories.
Thanks so much for your kind words. Thanks for watching!
Hey Rick! Glad to see that you are unaffected by the fires. I asked Terry and he told me as well. Wow, Charley Maxwell. I am familiar with mostly his 1963 and 1964 cards and didn't realize he had one in the 1952 set. And I didn't realize he was still with us until just recently. I like that 1957 card of his. Now, Tommy Brown, I was completely unaware of. Cool that he was the youngest player to hit a home run. And yes sadly, we also lost Bob Uecker. I like his '62 rookie card. It's great that Bobby Shantz is still with us. Enjoyed the other cards you showed. I would love to get the '53 Haddix. Again, glad you are safe.
Hey Gannon! I am all good out here, thankfully! Fires still going on. Charlie Maxwell was an interesting guy. I never heard about him until I saw the MLB story. I didn't even know I had his cards and then I saw I had a few. HAHAHA Tommy Brown I had heard of only cause every time an old Brooklyn player passed, I would google oldest living Dodger and it was always Tommy Brown. Amazing that Bobby Shantz is still around. I hear he can still tell stories. I think Ray from Philly met him in a video. Thanks for watching, Gannon. I appreciate it!
I'm so glad you're safe! That was a national tragedy. El Paso has been the opposite of SoCal -- we actually had a little snow. (Schools and other institutions panicked and delayed their openings.) I've actually heard of Charley Maxwell, and I know about his Sunday legend. On the other hand, I learned a lot about Tommy Brown, especially that he was the youngest major leaguer to homer. So thanks for this new theme!
Hi Michael. I am good luckily. I feel awful for those who have lost so much. Fires still happening as I speak. How is your weather today? Still snowing? I had never heard of Charley Maxwell and then I didn't realize I had some of his cards in my collection, so it was nice learning about him. Tommy Brown, I only knew cause every time a Brooklyn player passed, I'd google oldest living Dodger and I'd always say "oh yeah, Tommy Brown." HAHA. Thanks for watching, Michael!
Rick, our snow was evanescent. For many days on end, it's been sunny, beautiful, but terribly cold (by El Paso standards). So I'm not complaining, knowing what so much of the country is going through.
Thanks for sharing your pickups. Great to hear you’re doing well.
Thank you for your kind words, Orlando!
Hey Rick Glad to hear you are doing well! Charley Maxwell being from Paw Paw is cool, our vacation home in South Haven Michigan is 20 minutes away from Paw Paw. There is a golf course near there I like to play with my daughters! I just read about Tommy Brown yesterday, great that you were able to share his story. Have a great weekemd
Thanks Steve! All good here. I didn't even know about the town of Paw Paw until I started reading about Charley Maxwelll. I thought it was a joke. I have to go check that area someday. I've been to Ohio and Illinois, but not Michigan. Tommy Brown was 97 and one of the last two players from the 40s still around. That is crazy. Thanks so much for watching!
Hey buddy so good to see you on here again. I'm so glad your ok. I'm so ready for baseball. I'm a big reds fan. I'm 61 and grew up when the dodgers played the reds it was like playoff atmosphere. I knew the dodgers lineup like I did the reds. My favorite dodgers were Steve garvey and Ron cey the penguin. Those were some great games. I watched most baseball on a 12 inch black and white TV or my transistor radio lol. I'm from Ohio so go Buckeyes this Monday. Take care. Ken
Thanks so much for your kind words, Ken. Yes, the Reds and the Dodgers was quite the rivalry in the 70s. Oh how I hated that Joe Morgan and Pete Rose. HAHAHA! I did grow up to respect them. They were a great team. Do you still live never Cincy? I'd like to visit that baseball stadium someday. Ahhh an OSU fan. Good luck on Monday! It's going to be a great game! Have a great weekend!
Ive watched your videos for a while now and i really enjoy them. I seen the fires out in LA and thought id check on ya. Take care and god bless.
Elvis, I am all good. Thank you for checking and always thank you for watching!
Hey Rick, It’s funny how 1980 marked the end of your days as a child collector, while it was my gateway into the world of baseball cards. I remember opening so many of those packs and storing the cards in either a cigar box or an old shoe box. I couldn’t get enough of Pirates and Yankees cards! There’s something about the simple yet colorful design that really lets the photographs shine. I’m with you on the mix of portrait and action shots-it would be great if Topps still did that today. It makes flipping through binder pages much more interesting, with each card telling its own story. What are your three favorite cards in the set? For me, it’s Dave Parker, Reggie Jackson, and Gary Carter. The Tim Foli card might not be the first one that comes to mind for most people, but I’ve always liked it. I still remember pulling it from a pack-it’s a great action shot, and you’ve got the pillbox cap with all those Stargell stars on it. The George Scott card was another standout, with a nice portrait shot. Rickey had such an incredible career. I was in Kindergarten when he retired, and then, I was married with my wife expecting our first child when he hung it up. Time sure flies! By the way, I love the added touch of the lunchbox and books displayed alongside the binder.
Hi Terry! Yeah, I was fully into 1980. By 1981 I wouldn't even look at a baseball card. I loved opening packs as a kid. I haven't opened a pack on a good 30 years. 1980 is a good looking set IMO. My favorites are a lot of the batting cage shots. Dusty Baker, Mike Schmidt and Steve Garvey. Just great shots of their faces. Then you have the action shots of Reggie Jackson and Nolan Ryan. It's just a very nice set. The Carter and Parker cards you mentioned are top notch. The Foli card I had to look up. His face while Joel Youngblood slides into him is great. Cards seemed just so innocent back then. Weird to think Rickey is gone. He just seemed like a man that would live to 100. Thanks for the new layout feedback. It's definetly still a work in progress. Thanks for watching!
It's always interesting to hear what each collector considers the last "vintage" set. It's funny, I always have considered 1973 to be the last year. And that was my last year collecting as a kid, just like you with 1980. Those '80s look great in the binder. I'm discovering I'm liking the look of the various sets of the mid-70s - the late 80s in the binders.
Gannon, I do agree that 73 is the last vintage because it was the last set to be released by individual series. My buddy thinks the last vintage set is 1975. I have even heard people say up to 1989 is vintage. So many different answers for that question. I chose 1980 just cause it was the last year of the Topps monopoly. For me at least, 1981 was a different world card collecting than 1980 and before. Binders are fun! Always appreciate you watching!
1980 Topps...the year it all started for me
Life wise or collecting wise? :)
@RickAcostaDodgerCardCollector collecting
Fun stuff, Rick. Have a great new year.
Thanks Dave, you too!
Happy New Year, Rick. Really enjoyed seeing your cards and hearing your family Christmas stories. A belated Happy 90th Birthday to your mom. Looking forward to seeing your collection grow in 2025. All the best to you this year.
Thank you, Rob! Mom's 90th birthday was fun! Hopefully this is a good year for all of us!
Hey Rick! I loved hearing you talk about the 1980 set! I also bought this as a complete set, probably around 1988! Three other memories you touched on. You mentioned "Big " Ed Halicki. Among myself and my friends at the time (back in the early 70s) he was known as "Ugly" Ed Halicki (my apologies to Mrs. Halicki) and I immediately could hear my College roommate calling his name! Second, Rusty Staub was always known as "Le Grande Orange" which is what the broadcasters on the French language radio called him! The name traveled with us as he made his circuit of a number of other teams around MLB. Finally, the Candyman's No-No is one of two no-hitters I have personally watched (this one on TV) from start to finish! The other was Andy Hawkins versus the Chicago White Sox which he lost in eight innings. He would later lose the no-hitter again when MLB changed the rules on 8 inning no-hitters qualifying as an official no-hitter. I also watched on TV Jim Bibby's 28-batter 1-hitter (I am thinking it was also against the Dodgers, but that may be untrue). He lost the Perfect Game when the very first batter singled to start the game! He then retired the next 27 consecutive hitters! Great memories! All of things you mentioned about the reason for the end of your youthful collecting experience were also true for me, except I eventually married the Girl!
Hi Rick! Ed Halicki from my memory had a lot of hair on the top of his head and a mustache. I just remember how tall the man was. Wish he had a better career. Rusty Staub I remember on the 73 Mets. Still don't know why he doesn't have a card that season. Yeah, Le Grande Orange! I remember also seeing that on his 1976 Topps Traded card. OMG, I remember the Andy Hawkins game. That inning was brutal. The Bibby game I don't remember but it could have been against the Dodgers. Jim Bibby was another man who I thought should have been better. I think he had problems with Frank Robinson when he pitched for Cleveland. I would have given up all my cards for the right girl! I am glad it worked for you, Rick!!! Have a great weekend!
@ I am so glad you enjoyed my silly memories and musings. Jim Bobby was a stud in Pittsburgh! I loved him! Your memories are great! Going through a complete set brings back memories you don’t often recall just looking at the stars. You know, the kind that just make you smile 😊!!! Keep it up! I love it!
I need to start doing videos like this with my team set binders. enjoyed hearing you go through the 80 set.
Do it! It's fun to show off the binders now and then.
Fun video, Rick! Nice set!
Thanks Scott!
I too was 15 and you're bang on...girls cars and was into the music scene too Rick...seems we had similar stories in our journey...hope you had a great holiday season Rick...cheers
Thanks for watching, Mike! It was funny looking back because it made me realize Phase II of me started with music, girls and cars.
1980 is a great set. Thank you for sharing. Saw your hat. I am going to Long Beach for business. Any food or card suggestions while I am there? Thanks Rick
What kinda food do you enjoy? Cards stores close by I would recommend South Bay Cards in Lomita, CA. Another good store is Baseball Cards Plus in Huntington Beach. if you feel like going into LA, you should go to the Burbank Card Store. Let me know if you need more info.
Great set! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Happy new year Rick. Great set and fun Hendersons to see. I agree with you about the Westminster show today. Mostly Pokémon and I also saw the mays and mantle. Talked to the dealers and they just brought it to show off and bring in eyes. Probably gonna hold off until the Burbank show next month.
Man, that Westminster show is hit or miss, Edison. I only go cause it's a short drive from my house. I am not doing anything until Burbank either. I'll be there on Friday for sure.
Happy new year to you and your family 😊
Thank you, Bob!
Mike Scott was a pretty good pitcher. Wasn't he on a 1980 rookie card?
Mike, you're right. Mike Scott was next to Jesse Orozco. The guy had some very good years with the Astros.
