Nice recounting of the Yanks and Dodgers over the years. It really looks like the Dodgers are in the process of trouncing the Yankees as the series stands at 3 - 0 as I write this. By the way, if you want a Bill Bevens card, he was in the 1948 Bowman set, card #22 under Floyd Bevens. One of my favorite cards is the 1964 card that features Koufax in Game 1 of the 1963 series. I saw the '77 and '78 series as well as the '81. Many moons ago already! Nice cards and nice history, Rick.
Great cards and accompanying stories. Much you exposed about those 50’s series I did not know. Newcombe walked out before games end and lashed out at a nearby gas attendant?! 😳. Thanks for sharing Rick and hopefully you’ll be sharing some Tommy Edman and Teoscar Hernandez cards next week! 💪🏽
I love the thought and time you put into this video. Great cards too!
Hey Rick, I enjoyed hearing you recount the history of the Dodgers and Yankees World Series matchups and seeing the cards from your collection to go along with. You showed some beautiful cards and memorable players. I didn’t know Newcombe may have punched someone after he left the stadium during game 7. Crazy! The 63 Topps Koufax is my favorite card of his, but I like the 63 Fleer too. I don’t have that one along with his rookie. I am not going to likely get the rookie but I may go for the 63. I love the story of how lonely Yogi was as first base coach in game one. He had no one to talk to. Haha. Speak for yourself on the 70s cards not being as exciting. lol. They are for me. I love those late 70s sets. I agree with you on the 78 Guidry. In fact, I think it is visually one of my favorite Yankees team sets along with the 1980. I like the design of both and there are a lot of nice action shots. They look nicely when displayed in a binder by team. RIP Fernando. Thanks for sharing.
I bought one of these today but its a 1968 o-pee-chee pin up
I'm rooting hard for your Dodgers in this one! Greats cards shown and love the WS commentaries here-- thanks
I was born in 1976, so i don't remember the world series when I was young. The 1988 series is the first I remember. Im excited for the 2024 series. Amazing cards!
Hi Rick, let’s go blue!
Let's go Dodgers!
I enjoyed this very much, Rick! The Dodgers and Yankees have had some classic WS in the past, and I'm hoping this year's will not disappoint. As for going to the series, well, $900 per seat for up top down the line is just ridiculous. You'll have just as much fun watching on TV while texting us.
Mike, I could justify the money sometimes but not for game 1 and 2. Maybe a potential series winning 6 or 7, but I can't for 1 and 2. I'll be texting, trust me. Thanks for watching, my friend!
Thanks for the video😊
Thank you, Bob!
Rick, I'm glad you're back. I missed your perspective, your sense of history, your easygoing narration. I alway felt sorry for Newk because he was such a great pitcher but usually had such crummy luck in the World Series. I agree that Topps outdid themselves with the design of the 1961 all-stars. And here we are, with your excellent presentation revving us up for the Series. By the way, I always stick around to the end because I want to see the cats.
Michael, I was tired. hahaha. Thank you always for your kind words. I just enjoy talking about baseball and the Dodgers. Let's see what happens the next four games. I'll be ready to talk. Thanks again, Michael!
Great video and awesome cards Rick!
Thank you, Scott!
Great video and cards, except did you need to take us all back to all those world series losses? :) Just kidding - Really excited about the upcoming series. Hope the Dodgers pitching holds up!
You're right! it was frustrating reliving how the Dodgers lost so much to the Yankees. HAHA. Fun cards to look for indeed. Thanks for watching, Mark!
If you have a chance to go to the world series, big mistake to pass it up. Nice cards.
Thanks for watching, Brian!
Well done. I can’t wait to see the dodgers whoop the Yankees lol😅
I hope you're right, my friend!!
Hey Rick, heard the news this morning of Fernando Valenzuela passing away and thought about you. Fernando was a big part of my teen years and I’ll never forget Fernandomania in 1981. Plus 1981 was the first year I opened baseball packs so Fernandomania coincided with baseball card collecting having a boom in 1981. Hope you are doing well.
Thanks for thinking of me, Chris. Fernando will definitely be missed. Have a lot of memories of his days with the Dodgers. I hope all is well in your neck of the woods!
Awesome cards Rick. I too remember that epic Dodgers/Phillies NLCS in 77’. So exciting watching that as a kid growing up in Encino. Seems like Manny Mota always came through in the clutch. Speaking of 77’…here we go against the dreaded Yanks. I’m confident we’re going to add some great new Dodger WS Champs cards to our collection this year. Thanks for sharing your cards Rick. Go Dodgers! 💪🏽
Manny Mota was the man, Todd! He always came through! It's going to be a fun World Series, don't you think?
@@RickAcostaDodgerCardCollector Yeah Rick…a sweep would be VERY fun indeed!
Great topic Rick, I think in today's baseball with all the wild card teams it is a lot harder to win a championship. I think todays playoffs diminishes the value of winning your division a bit. Back in the 70's and 80's there were some great playoff series that were fun to watch especially with a trip to the World Series on the line!
Steve, it's a lot harder to get to the World Series these but we're going to have a great World Series starting on Friday. Go Dodgers!
@@RickAcostaDodgerCardCollector Go Dodgers!
Hi Rick, I enjoyed hearing your playoff and World Series memories. Other than 1980, I was too young to remember the Royals and Yankees series. 1980 is one I would like to forget, but it didn’t sting too hard because I was still pretty young at the time. Nice group of cards to commentate those series. The 64 Koufax is a beauty. If that image was on his regular card from that year, collectors would be clamoring for it. The series cards don’t have the same cache. I saw Rocket Rick commenting on the Mantle. It is likely game 2 or 7. The Mick looks like he swung and missed. You can see McCarver putting his other hand on his mitt to hold the ball. It is definitely Gibson on the mound. That’s awesome the 75 Joe Rudi brings back childhood memories of your friend from Little League. I would love to know why they change how many playoff cards they put in a set. That and other decisions would be a fun interview to listen to. Thanks for sharing.
Terry, I didn't know about the discrepancies until Rick and Mike said something. Topps could be so lazy! Topps has post season cards today in Topps Heritage which is nice. I wish Topps base set would do it. Thanks for watching!
Really cool post season cards!
Love the post season cards, Eric!
Hey Rick! Enjoyed your recounting those great playoff series. Those rivalries between teams like the Yankees and the Royals were something else. I remember when they brought the camera in to talk to Brett. I thought that was so bush league. You leave the guy alone at a moment like that. Anyway, I love the series and playoff cards you featured. That Koufax card is one of my favorite cards of all time. It was great when they featured every game of the series and playoffs the way they used to. I'm not a big fan of the 1971 cards though. But I love the '68. '69. and '70. If they started making playoff cards of every game played now, the subset alone would reach 720 cards, lol. Hey, just in case you aren't aware, Battersbox is having another one of their discount sales! All the best - Gannon
And I just bought cards from The Battersbox the day you commented. I love that store. Yeah, the George Brett interview back then I had never seen before until that day. I remember being so sad. The post season cards I love, but they were definitely not perfect! The Koufax card is the best! Thanks for watching, Gannon!
Thanks Rick for your history of the cards 😊
Thank you for watching, Bob!
Great stuff Rick i have very few of those but I do have the 60 dodgers with wills and the 69 bob gibson card that is in the 300 greatest cards by mike Payne. Remember there's a 1960 Bell brand Maury Wills. Go Dodgers talk to you later today
Jesse! I have my Dodger cap on and ready for game 5! I think I do have a Bell Brand card of Wills. I forgot about that one. Thank you for watching! Go Dodgers!
Great stuff Rick, thanks for sharing
Thank you, Orlando!
This is such a legendary trip down memory lane with stops at those grand postseason moments! I know a lot of us crabby old-timers refer to 1968 as the last "real" World Series, but the game always changes, and hell, my Red Sox won four times under the new format. As an aside, the 1960 Topps card of 1959 game 6, "Scrambling after Ball." has been voted the worst Topps World Series card of all time. What, they couldn't get a shot of Larry Sherry, the hero of the Series?
Michael, I didn't know about game 6, I didn't know that is considered the worst World Series card ever. I should have show it! HAHAHA! I miss the 70's and 80's playoff format, but I realize the game has to evolve. It's always fun looking back. Thanks so much for watching!
Mr Acosta im privelage watching your videos your knowledge combined with your card collecting is really fantastic thank you
You are too kind. I would say I am just a guy that loves the history of baseball. Thank you for watching!
Hi Rick, loved the video and thanks for the shout-out! Topps was notoriously lazy when making their cards, using photos from the wrong games on the WS cards. The Mantle card you showed in 1964 has a photo from game 7, not game 3. The funny thing is that this was the only hit that Mantle ever got off of Gibson. The Brooks Robinson card photo (out in the desert..and one of my favs by the way) was actually from game 3, not 5. Anyway, those series in the 70's were a blast to watch as a kid. A lot of back and forth, and it was always fun back then to watch the Royals and Yankees go at it. Have a great weekend my friend.
Hey Mike! your video brought back so many memories of growing up at Dodger Stadium. I wouldn't change that for anything in the world. Both you and RocketRick brought up the Mantle card, I did not know that! Brooks is from game 3? Damn, you're right, Topps was lazy ass!! I am sure we'll be chirping back and forth during game 5 in a few. Enjoy!
Wills has a card prior to 63 fleer. It's a post cereal card. Seaver has the strikeout record at 19, I think.
I see he has regional cards from Bell Brand as well. I thought Seaver's 19 was regular season? Thanks for watching, Brian!
@@RickAcostaDodgerCardCollectorYou were right, Gibson still holds the strike out record
Just my opinion, too many playoffs. I think it's more about making money than the benefit of the fans.
I agree. I preferred the 70's and 80's format myself.
Hopefully Terry @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648 comments! I just showed the 1964 WS Game 3 card in a video. In addition to the pitcher “looks” like Bob Gibson, note Mickey wearing the road gray uniform with “New York” across his chest. Game 3 was played in Yankee Stadium and Mantle’s. Game 3 homer in the 9th was a “walkoff” which can only happen to the home team. I loved these cards, especially from the 1961-1971 sets. I graduated from HS in 1970 and watched or listened to every one of those games! You are so right about the memories! Thanks Rick!
Rick, I never knew about the Mantle card until you and Mike The Sports History Collector brought it to my attention. Topps was just lazy! I remember not liking the post season games during the day but I did have some teachers that would let us watch if the game started at 1pm local time. Such a fun era! Thanks so much for watching, Rick!
Well done. Hopefully the dodgers win today
Dodger and Padres for breakfast in Japan!!! How is the buzz out there my friend?
@@RickAcostaDodgerCardCollector everyone is excited
Love the 72 set also. So far of the sets I’ve built, it was the most challenging to complete. I am currently 3/4’s of the way done with 67 and halfway done with 66; both missing tons of high numbers. I guess I’m a glutton for punishment. Love the videos!!
Oh I want to see your 66 and 67 sets when you're done. I would like to 1967 one day. I hear both those sets are a pain. Thanks so much for watching!
Hi rick just to let you know how to complete a set in the 70's larry fritsh sold me a ryan rookie 15$ my dad bought alot from a guy called t.j. schwartz i think he was a big time writer for a bbc magazine
I used to buy from Larry Fritsch as a kid. What.a deal your dad got for the Ryan! That's a great deal. Thanks for watching!
Page after page of enjoyment! This video is proof of the joy of set collecting. This 1972 set is a snapshot of an era. Loved this video Rick!
Thanks Chuck! 1972 is such great set!
Hey Rick, what a beautiful '72 set you have. I love the colors and design of the '72 set. I know it’s said to have a psychedelic feel, and I can see it. I always thought the font and raised lettering gave it the look of a theater marquee. Bench, Reggie, Billy Williams, Wills, and Munson could be the best page ever, and then you add Seaver, Stargell, and Lolich on the next page. Thanks for pointing that out. I also remember the Garvey and Carew being so expensive. It seemed like the second-year Garvey was as much as the rookie. I was thrilled when I added both to my collection. I didn’t know that the awards were included in the '72 baseball set. The OPC hockey sets had awards from '69 to '72. I checked to confirm the date range. I didn’t realize they did it for that many years. It’s a nice added feature beyond just the standard player photos. I find it interesting that baseball is the only sport that did multi-player rookie cards. You don’t see that in vintage football, hockey, or basketball, and those are much smaller sets. Thanks for sharing the set and the background. I really enjoyed this.
Hi Terry 1972 is a very nice set, a lot of great players in the set. Yes, that one page I showed had a lot of great players. Amazing to see them all in a row. As kids, we talked about the Garvey and Carew's and felt they were untouchable. No one we knew owned them. I didn't know OPC showed off awards. I'll have to look those up today. I also never thought about the mutual player RC's until you brought it up. I wonder who thought that up? Now I have all these things to think about. hahaha. Thanks for watching!
Nice Rick! The 72 set is one of my all time favorites. Picked up a bunch of them at my first card show back in 1981. Cheers and go Dodgers!
1972 is definitely a fun set! Always appreciate you watching, Go Blue!
I’m a set builder through and through! 🤣
Another set collector!! I love it! It's fun having ALL the cards.
Hi Rick, great walk through of your 1972 set. Mel Stottlemyre did indeed have not only a 73 card, but a 74 and 75 (he was released in March of 75 and the card had already been printed) The boyhood stars cards were never my favorites...kinda thought it was weird they would do those. LOL.
Mike, I never liked the boyhood stars in 1972 and 1973 either. Kinda creepy! hahaha! Have a good Sunday!
Great looking set! Probably the most rewarding set when you're finished. 🎉🎉
I agree, Eric. That 1972 set was just a mammoth to build. Thanks for watching!
Thanks Rick for your knowledge of players cards s.😊
Bob, thank you for your kind words!
These reminiscences about buying cards in the old days are so enjoyable and relaxing. I'm figuring that when you were first buying cards, a wax pack cost 10 or 15 cents. 1972 was certainly a psychedelic peak for Topps. I think the reason so many highs and semi-highs are in nice shape is that the youngsters weren't playing with them for as long as they did with cards in the earlier series. I know it was that way with my cards from my youth.
Michael, I know I paid 10 cents for 1973 wax, I didn't buy 1972 except for vending machine that would sell me five cards for a nickel. Being on the coast, I always wonder if the cards even made it to California. I am assuming at least Series 5 did, but I heard that Series 5 and 6 both came out during football season. I know I jumped to football for a few weeks when the season started but usually lost interest after a few weeks. I miss buying packs until I see someone on TH-cam open a pack of vintage and I see the garbage he bought. hahaha! Thanks for your kind words, Michael!
Hey Rick. Really enjoyed that. It was very relaxing watching you go through the whole set. When the set first came out, I wasn't that crazy about it, but now I like it a lot. You're making me think about putting the set together. Thanks for the details on the A's uniforms and the Rangers not having their own hats in the photos until '73. Btw, Stottlemyre had cards through 1975. For me, the '72 set represents the last burst of creativity on the part of Topps, as beginning in '73 they started that whole white inlay run, with of course, a brief respite in '75. Maybe that was the last burst. But after '73, the cards started more or less looking the same (excluding '75) with minor differences. Just my take. One other thing, and I may be in the minority here, but I always felt the "traded" cards were an insult to the player! I mean, who wants to have a card that shows they weren't wanted? Of course, somebody else wanted them, but still. And then the way they have the "Traded" stamped on the front of the card like they are being branded with a cattle iron. Again, my take, lol. Off the subject, I noticed that Battersbox raised the amount of money you have to spend before you get free shipping, from $10 to $21. Oh well, what are we gonna do? Anyway, great video, and you have a beautiful 1972 set.
Thank you, Gannon! Yeah, I was like you. Did not like as a kid. I thought the design was just out there. Now I think it's a great looking design and set. I totally forgot when Stottlemyre stopped pitching. I am going have to look at my 73, 74 and 75 cards to remember what he looked like. I was always hot/cold with the designs on the 70's. As a kid I did not like 1975, but love it now. Liked 76 but still can't stand 77. Interesting take on the 72 cards. I have not heard that viewpoint before but it's a valid take. Battersbox changed their rates? I didn't;t notice that. Luckily I have nothing in my car ATM. lol Thanks for your kind words, Gannon!
You have a great collection Rick.
Thank you my friend! Have a great weekend!
Beautiful. I don’t have the same patience to do a full set but love doing subsets like 56 Topps HoFers or my fav design 60 all star subset. I do love love love the feel of turning binder pages though. My only set currently is my 1948 exhibits HOF set. Thanks for sharing stories and your collection.
Edison, PATIENCE is a good word I should have used. Building a set does require patience and I am surprised I am a set builder because I honestly have no patience. I think subsets are a great idea. I want to do more subsets if I plan on not building that particular set. 1948 Exhibits is a very nice set!!! Have a great weekend, my friend!
Well done 🎉
Thank you, my friend! I hope you have a nice weekend!
Enjoyed the cards. I am working on the 69 set ... probably 40% done.
Craig! It;s a nice set with a lot of great players from the 70's with long careers. You're nearly half way there. Good lucking finishing that set!
So fun following the hobby with you. Thanks for sharing. Cheers brotha
Thank you, my friend! Have a great weekend, Edison!
Love the 69 set, Rick! Seeing players like Watson, Rudi and Messersmith brings back memories!
Steve, 1969 has all the distinguished career players we grew up watching. That is my favorite things about the 1969 set. A lot great players that weren't HOF caliber but still had a nice careers. Thanks for watching!
Hey Rick, work sucks us in sometimes. I am glad you have a story of texting your friends when Ohtani went 50/50. What an incredible feat. I am with you on backgrounds on the 50 Bowman. There are so many different types of images from closeups to full body shots, so it lends itself to all different types of background imagery. I like turtlenecks under jerseys too. Beautiful Mize. I think I prefer it without the name, but would be happy with either. Jensen was an incredible athlete. Played halfback at Cal. Was there first 1,000 yard rusher. The first player to play win in the World Series, All Star Game and Rose Bowl. He had a lot of off filed issues that manifested itself in a fear of flying. Good looking El Tiante. 69 has so many good rookies that aren’t HOFers. I didn’t know Messersmith’s rookie was in the set. Thanks for sharing!
Hey Terry! Those 50 Bowman's are just amazing. I keep asking, if the cards were larger in size, would I like them as much? I think it's the smallness in size that attracts me! I looked up Jackie Jensen after your comments. Man, he did a lot and was a great athlete. He should have gone to the NFL and not get stuck playing behind Mickey Mantle. It's a shame that his fear of flying messed with his head. It couldn't be easy back then to fly across the country. Love Andy Messersmith. Dock Ellis is another rookie in that set I still need to add. Thanks for watching and have a great weekend!
Solid pick ups Rick. I like your approach to the 69 set.
Thanks Mitchell! This set I thought I'd do differently. cause I didn't want to build the entire set but has some players I really liked.
