Scott Rundle: Sola Laminated Reflective Panel Cooker
Scott Rundle has taken his personal sized reflective panel cooker and added the twist of a laminated surface to make the underlying card stock reflector more durable. This personal size cooker can be used for individuals off the beaten patch, for mass production to get cookers to refugee camps, or for demonstrating solar cooking practices & principles.

    you guys are amazing!!! I didn't want to spend the money on a sun oven, trying to stock up food, I am very concerned about what is coming, I can do this!!!!! question, If I purchased a 5 gallon aquarium, turned it upside down on a mirror and put black pots in it, would it be too big to be effective as a solar cooker?

    • @SolarCookingMuseum
      @SolarCookingMuseum 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you add enough reflectors and the angles are correct, it should cook. The less space the better but if you use black pots and pans, it will at least work as well as a crock pot. For reflector angles, you can test them by adding one reflector and see the sunlight captured entirely in the cooking area of the base. Take that reflector off, then put the next one on, to look for the same, and so forth up to a potential of 4 reflectors. You will need to move them as the sun moves, and one thing I see a lot of people do is put the whole thing on a large lazy susan so you can turn the whole gizmo to face the sun. I'd recommend joining facebook.com/groups/solarcookingdoityourself and sharing pictures of any variation you choose, and the group woudl be happy to add more tips...

    I've created a vacuum insulated Solar cooker that I suspect will be able to work very well in low temps. It _doesn't_ use vacuum insulation panels and in this case is not a box style, but rather a glass container with an acrylic disk top with a hole drilled in, a black silicone gasket, and couple other things. The vacuum is pulled by a hand/manual pump, which pulls a pretty decent vacuum. Normally you wouldn't be able to use acrylic with a Solar cooker because it cannot take the hot temps. But with 3" or more of medium vacuum between the hot pot and the surface of the acrylic, the acrylic is not going to get that hot. I plan on doing a couple YT videos about this easy to make, hyper efficient, and relative inexpensive Solar cooker system. For the reflector part, I like the Funnel system because it is easy to make and works quite well.

    Hi Laura, regular soda lime glass is not the best to use for Solar/UV disinfecting because the glass filters a good percentage of the UV light. Usually PET plastic is used because it allows more UV through. If you want something that will work really well, look into pure quartz glass. You can get replacement tubes for patio propane heaters for around 50 to 60 dollars. You would have to seal the ends somehow, but that type of glass allows pretty much all the UV to pass through.

      Great idea--when I hit the road I always pack my sunplicity.fr portable/collapsible deep parabola cooker. Very fast + it can be used where there are fire bans, as there is no hazard of the focal point escaping and even inside the parabola, it's not hot enough to start any combustibles on fire. Depending on how much space you have, a box cooker like the Solar Oven Society/Solavore Sport might make sense to be bungeed to a trailer so you can cook while rolling down the road :)

    Nice video! I've dabbled in making and/or buying solar ovens for close to 15+ years and pretty much used all the same models shown. The parabolic dish I bought, and the old satellite dishes I scavenged and coated with chrome tape were somewhat dangerous in my opinion. They easily ignite wood in a few seconds when placed at the focal point. A bit difficult to cook on them as you are staring at the sun all time and when done cooking you have to store them away from sunlight. Not promoting any ovens here, but the SunOven style with the 4 reflectors has always worked best for us. Wife is finally onboard with doing solar cooking whenever we can. We have 2 of them, one I bought many years ago and one my wife found in a thrift store with very minor damage for $15. Don't think they even knew what it was, so I grabbed that thing in a heartbeat. Cooking in the sun is great and not sure why more people don't do it. We throw a totally frozen roast in a pot with spices and a little water. Rotate it in the sun's direction ever hour or so and it's ready to eat in 4-6 hours. Happy Cooking!

    • @SolarCookingMuseum
      @SolarCookingMuseum 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The satellite dishes and some manufactured parabolas are "shallow" dishes, as in, the focal point reaches outside the edge of the bowl, so they need monitoring and prudent placement for safety. However there are "deep parabola" cookers where the focal point does not leave the inside of the bowl. The SunPlicity, for instance, is a deep parabola and can be used for camping where there are fire bans. Also, they don't need to be refocused every 10-15 minutes like a shallow parabolic cooker. The SunPlicity can be set "ahead" by as much as 40 minutes, and cooks find for 80... I've never had to cook in it for more than 40 and so never move it. Anyway, the earliest manufactured parabolas being shallow dishes unfortunately created the concern for fire safety, but more makers are coming around to the deep dish style.
