THE HISTORY OF BLACK BULLETS - A GEORDIE'S FAVOURITE SWEET
Today’s video is on black bullets, a largely forgotten sweet that was popular in the North East of England!
The miners of the Northumberland and Durham Coalfield sucked and crunched the strong peppermint boiled sweets whilst working underground in hot and dusty conditions and a tin or packet of black bullets is a regular fixture in pockets and shelves in this region.
Sweeties has long been part of the North East’s heritage; from Dainty Dinahs toffees, tyne mints to Wilkin’s red boy toffee, I think black bullets stand out as the region’s most recognisable!
I absolutely loved researching this topic and used the below in my research:

SEEING MOLLY SUNDERLAND'S SHIPYARD GIRL SCULPTURE!!
มุมมอง 1.9K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
The shipyard girls of Sunderland have been a largely forgotten about piece of the North East of England’s history, having been brought into the modern generation by Nancy Revells’ book series The Shipyard Girls which tells the stories of these incredible women who worked on our riverside. So it was incredibly exciting to hear about the new sculpture of Molly, commemorating all the women who wor...

IS THIS THE BEST CHARITY SHOP IN NORTH EAST ENGLAND? JESMOND MIND, ST GEORGES TERRACE
มุมมอง 13Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I think this might just be the best charity shop in the North East of England… I recently started going to a spin class in Jesmond and my fear of being late means I’m often super early so I discovered the shops on St George’s Terrace and this Mind Charity shop on the corner… Inside is a mixture of modern and vintage pieces, aiming for quality over quantity - there’s so many random historic bits...
The Northern Festive Porridge - Frumenty

Did you know that it was once a custom in the North of England to eat a porridge called Frumenty during the festive season? Once a traditional pastime for the Christmas season, particularly on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, frumenty has long gone out of fashion. Want to see more? What was Christmas dinner like in North East England through history?
มุมมอง 480หลายเดือนก่อน
I don’t know about you, but the Christmas dinner is probably my favourite thing about Christmas. Eating pigs in blankets, the stuffing and the turkey and trimmings, whilst wearing a Christmas cracker paper hat, it’s just delightful! We start in Sunderland in 1884; an industrial hub of coal mining and shipbuilding! Through looking at old newspaper articles, it seems that a range of meats were po...

The history of the Fenwick Christmas window

The Fenwick Christmas windows in Newcastle are part and parcel with the start of the festive season but did you know that this tradition has only been going since the 1970s? The Newcastle flagship store was first opened in 1882 by John James Fenwick, being a mantle maker and furrier; selling all manners of luxury products, fabric, dresses and trimmings! I was a sugar boiler at Redheads (Star Confections) in Blyth in the early 90’s I used to make black bullets there, also known as all blacks 👍
My father when he gave up smoking after having a long removed due to cancer always had a bag of these at hand I used to get sent to the cornershop for a quarter of wrapped black bullets He always knew if I'd sneaked one out of the bag on the way home 😊
Out of context to your vid...but have you the book Alice in Sunderland...i have a lot of research to Sunderland people
Whenever i had a sore throat "me da" would melt them down with vinegar... 'old dads tale"...seemed to work His bread and milk poultous to stop infection in wounds was the most painful love your accent, and hairstyle....i'm originally from Birtley, Co. Durham Howay the lads....FTM
Simply Amazing 👍
Brings back so many memories of my younger years living in Roker. I see bellerbys amusements is still closed and not been refurbished. Spent many a day on the beaches and playing on the holy rock when the tide came in and looking for crabs on the rocks around Roker pier.. Thank you for the great footage and most of all Im missing the accent. ill be sure to subscribe. ❤
I grew up in Warrington. There's one of these still at Bridge Foot in the town centre.
I walk along there every Saturday and grab a bovril, nowhere better
Love this girl ❤
Re the iconic beer Double Maxim great to see it still being brewed in the city of Sunderland. Love to have a draught pint of it in the fantastic Peacock pub and some bottles of it in the Ivy House Chesters Chaplins the 3 Stories etc.
My late uncle use to live in those flats. I use to love coming up from Leicester in the 80’s and sitting in his living room window watching the ships
I miss Fred Dobsons Fizz Bombs
Black Bullets now ya torkin hinny!. My grandad was gassed in first world war and swore blind that black bullets did him more good than medicine! As a child in WW2 my gran seemed to always have a supply of them where from I have no idea.So of course grandad always kept the odd one for me right through the rationing days. Thank you. Walter. I am 84 and would love some now.
Thanks for telling the story of the air crash. Elizabeth Curry was my great, great grandmother. The story was a bit of an urban legend in our family as they family never spoke about it afterwards due to the tragic circumstances and we had to do some digging with the Echo years ago to prove to my gran (Elizabeth's grand daughter in law) that it was true.
It's lovely that the story is commemorated with a plaque on the building too ☺️
My grandad had these when i was a kid i remember he would always give one to the bus driver back in the day. I miss the old simpler happier days. It sucks having to grow up and do adult stuff haha.
My dad was coal miner in County Durham he always had black bullet's so got into them through sadly he died in 1987 when i was 17 ao this brings back great memories
I'm sorry to hear that, I think miners did an incredible job but it shortened their lives significantly. No wonder they had a fancy for black bullets to get them through it all
Lovely episode, my favourite was chocolate lick ❤
That's one thing I don't think I've tried! I'll have to give it a go ☺️
Chock lick was a mix of chocolate bars all different flavours even smarties were ground to a powder and you literally wet your finger and the dip it into the bag it was delicious I used to eat loads in the 80s @@northeastnostalgic5071
Excellent, ASDA in Stanley still stock them, introduced the g'kids to them and they love them, not the same as they used to be but nice all the same... Subbed you...x
My granda always had a bag of these, he's long gone now. I'm now in my 70s and buy a tin now and again, I love them.
Interesting that pineapple is two words in the newspaper ad. One does wonder what inspired the name Nelson's Balls? I was just reading an article on the Romans. It seems they had an extremely high exposure to lead. They even ingested it on purpose after Romans discovered that lead-containing syrups helped to preserve and sweeten wine. Lowered their IQ by at least 2%. We always called every type of boiled sweets bullets. I didn't know Maynards were a North East firm. I'm not as keen on boiled sweets as I used to be. I always 'cranched' them when they got small enough and my teeth aren't up to it now. Probably because I cranched too many bullets when I was young. Peppermint and vinegar. A well known cold remedy. I think I'd rather have the cold. My brother used to go to the Oxford Galleries every week in the 60s. Are the loose one's called Black Bullits with an 'i'. Old sweets to research? We always bought Keiller's Butterscotch at the sweet shop on St. Mary's island beside the lighthouse. They were the only place that stocked them as I remember. There was also a fizzy drinks powder called Creamola Foam which everyone seems to remember incorrectly as 'Cremona Foam'. No longer produced and the recipe seems to have been lost. The modern attempt at a copy is nowhere near as good so I hear. I've had many a stotty cake, or is it stottie cake, but I've never looked up their history. That would be interesting.
In 1990 me and a mate went on The Cretehawser over high tide. It was very eerie watching the tide slowly submerge the boat as there are a lot of holes in the main deck that create whirlpools while it fills the compartments below.. We knew the tide didn't fully submerge the boat as we lived quite close by.. The fellas from the local Crane site saw us and rang the emergency services.. We got rescued by the police who came all the way from Newcastle! 😮😂 The story was in The Echo the following day... Kids these days... You don't know half of what the older generation did when we were kids! 😂 - I'll tell you about playing on the railways lines in Pallion another time.. 😊
We have been to mr swainstons today. I was told the bullet's are black and pepper mint due to the confectioners at the time using the left overs from the week on a Friday to make them
Oh wow, I didn't know that! I suppose waste not want not even with sweets!😁
Being raised by my grandparents in Sunderland, this episode brought back fond memories, thank you very much for that 🙂 Now I know why my grandad called them bullets 😁👍
My nana says bullets too so I learnt that too! Pleased this video brought back memories ☺️
@northeastnostalgic5071 🙂
Spot on, bonnie lass!
Thank you!😁
lovely episode. I remember the black bullets from childhood. I guess i would like them now that i am older.. Being away from my hometown of Sunderland i have been looking for a traditional recipe from Sunderland for the ''pink slice''. Maybe you could do a recipe video for that♥Thank you, love your channel !
I did a video about the pink slice a whole ago but I didn't have a good time making it 😂 if you scroll back you should be able to find it as I have an original 1920s bero book with the recipe in ☺️
@@northeastnostalgic5071 Oh thank you for the reply. Will do♥
@@northeastnostalgic5071 you should do a video about singing hinnies , a north east dish , and do a video about lucozade that was invented in Newcastle
Ahh, fond memories right there. My nan would always have a tin of these on the mantle piece . I LOVED these along with "poor bens" as a kid . My heart jumped when I saw the tin as it took me back 40 years , Thank you , and keep uploading your wonderful videos .
Very interesting, thanks
Pleased you liked it, thought I'd try something new!
Interesting vlogs you do, nice too see a young woman taking an interest in the history around her. Do you only do Sunderland and the immediate area or are you diversifying into Durham, Washington, Birtley, Chester.Le.Street ? It's strange, since a kid I've always had a liking for history yet local history never appealed until about thirty years back. I think its what has happened to the areas in the last century, the destruction/demolition of a lot of what stood where that has gone and now sadly replaced with drab and dire depressing architecture such as shops, factories, roads etc, that trying to imagine what an area once was like is such a let down. However, seeing old photos suddenly reignites that passion. Sadly For many they will never know just how much history is around them.
Thank you so much for your comment ☺️ I try to go to different places around the North East, so hopefully I can visit Durham, Washington, Birtley and Chester le Street! I find it easier to research around my home town as I know the history from my family's perspective whereas areas slightly further away I don't know as much. I completely agree about local history not being about as much, I think people thought it was old and that we had to keep looking forward to the future but the future isn't the greatest neither!
Omg guys I live there it is not haunted at all so please go there it is very beautiful and cool
Thinking back to the early 70’s I seem to recall that you used to be able to get a full pot of tea and mugs etc from a hut on Cullercoats beach for a small deposit. Used to love the bags of Welks as well with a pin stuck into the bag to help you dig them out!!. Did anybody else call them “snots with crash helmets?” Love your content by the way. Keep it coming! Best wishes

I remember my nana taking me to South Shields to go on this train back in the 90s. Train ride followed by Minchella’s for an ice cream. Great memories. You feel like a big kid when you go to these places Have you been on the trains in Roker Park?
❤ xx
I remember riding the train when I was a very young kid back in the early sixties, it was magic. Went back a few years later only to find the live steam locos had been disposed of and replaced with some kind of grotty diesel powered unit that did not resemble any kind of loco. I remember the driver telling us it was council cut backs that led to the change to diesel.
Yes I've been on that track and the one at Roker Park
Another great vid. Love our coastline.
What are those things at 2:04?? Escape pods from Star Wars? Oh, what beautiful views. 🌅 Very calm sea for a change. I think they call this style of video ASMR which is very popular as I understand. That spike sticking up at 9:45 looked very dangerous.
Ahh, nature’s soundtrack was perfect, could almost smell the sea and sand. Thanks for the walk.
Fab video love shields and roker lovely area 🤩🤩👏👏👏
I got the new Terry Deary book England’s enemies I think it was called not started it yet but what I have read was very interesting 😊
Nice to see the old town! Lots of memories of the Roker , and Bay Hotels , and the Bier Keller at Seaburn Hall ? , chicken and chips in a basket ! ❤, long before your time , but nice to see a young person appreciate their heritage !
Lovely video footage Kathrine, great colours. I cycled from Roker to North Shields and back yesterday morning and it was indeed a very nice day. Cheers 🙂👍
Lovely video 😊 l love the coast, i really hope they bring the air show back this year, it's a real miss 🤞
I miss the airshow too! I think they do a triathlon instead now which isn't quite the same
Fresh paint job on the Groyne lighthouse?
Yes it has been restored from storm damage and a repaint with funding by Barbour, it looks really smart 😊
Wonderful views of the coast at sunrise, thanks for sharing.
We're so lucky to have this coastline nearby, pleased you liked my video! 😊
Love the seaside, so relaxing 😊 Enjoy reading your Horrible Histories books, a funny way of learning history x😊
Thank you! I used to love the Horrible Histories books as a child so excited to give these new books a go!
Lovely video of the coast and found the bit of the waves lapping in to the shore very calming .
There's nothing quite like the sounds of the coast!😁
Great video. I've lived in Whitburn my whole life and I'm still there. My favourite place. I'll always be proud to be a Whitburn lad!
I used to live in Glen thorpe ave when i was a kid. we moved away then but used to come back on holiday. Used to go to the amusements.. I can remember pinball machines the best and a sort of thing where a ball bearing dropped down through a vertical track made of pins. Was back in about 1970. Really sad to hear of the amusements being knocked down.. They were part of my life..
My local area!
