THE HISTORY OF BLACK BULLETS - A GEORDIE'S FAVOURITE SWEET

  • Today’s video is on black bullets, a largely forgotten sweet that was popular in the North East of England!
The miners of the Northumberland and Durham Coalfield sucked and crunched the strong peppermint boiled sweets whilst working underground in hot and dusty conditions and a tin or packet of black bullets is a regular fixture in pockets and shelves in this region.
Sweeties has long been part of the North East’s heritage; from Dainty Dinahs toffees, tyne mints to Wilkin’s red boy toffee, I think black bullets stand out as the region’s most recognisable!

Some amazing footage and pictures in this video I'm a hartlepool lad that grew up in the middle east and when ever we came home for a visit a tin of black bullets was on the first on the list to take back I used to love popping the old metal lid open before they changed them to the modern one

I’ve just ordered a big tin of Jesmonas from Amazon. Not had them for many years, my uncle used to live in Newcastle, so we would get them when we went there to visit. Great video, very interesting history. And I also subscribed.

I'm sorry to hear that, I think miners did an incredible job but it shortened their lives significantly. No wonder they had a fancy for black bullets to get them through it all

I was a sugar boiler at Redheads (Star Confections) in Blyth in the early 90’s
I used to make black bullets there, also known as all blacks 👍

I remember walking around blyth with the lovely smell of sweets wafting through the air.. Sadly that is no more and the redheads factory is now sheltered housing. Ps my mothers first job was with star confectionary in the store room

My father when he gave up smoking after having a long removed due to cancer always had a bag of these at hand
I used to get sent to the cornershop for a quarter of wrapped black bullets
He always knew if I'd sneaked one out of the bag on the way home 😊

Being away from my hometown of Sunderland i have been looking for a traditional recipe from Sunderland for the ''pink slice''. Maybe you could do a recipe video for that♥Thank you, love your channel !
