As soon as I come off the A1 & see Penshaw monument in the distance I know the long drive from Cornwall is over & I'm home,it's just iconic...I Have a photo of me Man & Dad, who.used to go courting there on a Sunday ,from around 1952,long before I was born, used to love the story's they would tell me ,it was a day out & a bus trip at the time from Sunderland, not many cars then & they didn't have to pay & used to go to blue bell woods also with a picnic...Great little blog, thank you...Must visit next time I'm in the area..
Hopefully my video has helped you to see what it is like ☺️ If there's anything you'd like to see that you don't really have access to anymore I can definitely try to do a video!
Fantastic video!Something I've always wanted to do before I moved from Durham to Yorkshire was to climb the staircase and take in the views from the balcony. Cant believe people used to walk arround the unguarded ledge all those years ago!
Thanks for the video. I live in Yorkshire now but was brought up in Grindon and we walked up to the monument many many times. In recent years going up to the top was on my to do list but I was told it was closed. Whenever I smell wild garlic I’m transported back to the woods on the north side. Happy days.
I'm pleased you liked it! 😀 I like to try and film my experiences as much as possible! I usually can see Penshaw Monument from my window so it's funny to see what it's like at the top!
I don't think it's promoted much but I've popped the direct link to the ticket page in the description so it's easy to have a look ☺️ it's definitely worth going up!
@@northeastnostalgic5071 I grew up near “Tunna”. I got a summer job in Red House with the council before going to uni (1977) I found it exciting looking over the town all the way to Tunna.
😅Blimey! I didn't know you could climb up the top of I 😮 I walked up to it once, in the dark. The hill certainly is a lot steeper than it appears. Great views. And a like from me 😃👍❤️
Lovely film. Very poignant. For a time in, in 1962, I lived with my grandparents on nearby Pennywell estate before I believe it later became something of a crime hotspot. My friend and I would take a short ride up to the monument via Northern's Consett bus. Then we'd climb up to the monument and lark about playing hide and seek etc. Free of charge then. No tearooms, No country park. The monument just sat alone amid open farmland. No car plant then but you could clearly see the tall chimneys of heavy industry in the distance. Now long gone I suspect. Once we were chased out of a nearby field by an angry ram. Far off innocent days. Thank you for re-kindling old memories.

Splendid stuff, ta very much. I went up there as a kid but my use of a wheelchair has prevented that for a long time now.
Lovely view

What a great view.
It really was, so much to see from the top!
Been up to penshaw monument many times but never up to the top of the actual monument looks good
Next one; climb Tunstall and Rock Hill; you get fantastic views out to sea and over the Town Centre
I don't think I've ever been to Tunstall or Rock Hill so I'll have to add those to the top of my list! I don't really know that side of Sunderland ☺️

Oh wow I didn’t know going to the top was a thing!
I didn't either until recently!☺️
Been there before didn’t know you could get to the top of it.
I’ve never been up but I’ve walked the many steps to the monument. I used to love Herrington Park opposite as a kid.
I hadn't really been to Herrington park before apart from the odd county show when I was a kid, but it was so lovely!
