BookTube NEWBIE Tag 2024: Joining BookTube in my 40s
My most disappointing books of 2024 are Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer, Normal People by Sally Rooney, Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu, and The Paleontogist by Luke Dumas
I have not read any of these but I do have Carmilla and The Palaeontologist on my radar. Fingers crossed I enjoy them more than you did, but I have heard mixed reviews about both.
If you enjoyed The Appeal (and The Christmas Appeal), I would recommend The Examiner by Janice Hallett. This one felt the most similar to The Appeal books, but I felt like it packed more of a punch.
Oh thanks for the rec. I have added that to my TBR. I did read The Twyford Code after The Appeal but didn’t enjoy that one as much.
Too bad about the Familiar. I still gotta read 9th House and Hellbent! The Princess Bride as a novel has a different kind of tone/humor than the movie does IMO. I enjoyed the book but still prefer the movie.
The Princess Bride movie just has such a fantastic cast. And the tone is definitely different.
Completely agree with you about The Familiar. I did finish it because I was hoping it would be more fantastical or I would become more attached to the characters, but nope. Thanks for sharing these.
This makes me feel much better about the fact I didn’t force myself to power through it.
I'm with you on A Natural History of Dragons, it was ok, but didn't live up to the hype I kept seeing from other BookTubers.
I am happy to hear there is at least one other person who thinks it was just ok. 😁 I really did want to love it.
Great job! It’s hard to talk about books when it disappointing. I love reading The Princess Bride, but I understand why seeing the movie first would kind of ruin it. One of the few movies that did better than the book. My most disappointing book was Dead Dead Girls by Nekesa Aria. The cover had me excited, the killer was a disappointment. Very easy to predict.
Thank you. 😊 I have not heard of Dead Dead Girls before. Reading the synopsis it does sound like it should be a great read, but it’s a shame it was easy to predict.
OMG Nghi Vo's "The Brides of High Hill," I don't even have to check my spreadsheet - that book devastated me and it was entirely down to expectations. Book 5 in a series I've loved all along (4-5 stars for every installment) and I landed on a 2.5 star for this one. Had it been first, I wouldn't have continued the series.
I remember you talking about that one in a video. 2.5 stars to the 5th book in a 4-5 star series is quite possibly the definition of a disappointing read!
I’ve been wanting to read None of This is True. Sounds so good! 😊
I would love to hear your thoughts on it if you do get around to reading it.
I love Holly Gibney, too! Great answers. Thank you so much for doing the tag!
Thank you for creating the tag, it was fun to take part in it. 😁
I want to read Legendborn. My 3 favorite books from November were The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, All Hallows by Christopher Golden, and The Night Parade by Ronald Malfi
Ronald Malfi is an author I really want to try but he has so many books I’m struggling to decide which to pick up.
@@Bookishdowntime In the book I read, they listed his books. I was surprised he has written so many books. He is very prolific
None of This Is True sounds fascinating. 100 % two wrongs don’t make a right.
Looking at the reviews it does seem to be a pretty polarising one. Well worth checking out though in my opinion.
Ha, great vid. I like the way you interjected that correction during the edit phase. I never really thought of making adjustments in this nature, but it really went over well. Nicely done! Now I also read the synopsis and book summaries. Sometimes it's accurate and sometimes it's not, but I don't think it derogatively affects my reading experience enough to stop reading them.
Thank you 🙂 It is such an easy way to add in anything I forgot to say, or that I didn’t think I was clear on. I know a lot of people like to go into books completely blind, but I am definitely someone who needs to know what I am getting myself in to 😆
@Bookishdowntime agreed, i read the covers too!!

I'm also really excited for the new Grady Hendrix book. He writes women especially well (at least in the books of his I've read so far). I'm also planning to read to the new Sangu Mandanna
I agree about Grady Hendrix. I think he especially writes young women well. My Best Friends Exorcism was very well done.
So many books to look forward to! I hesitate to look at what's coming up next year as I already have so much on my shelf that is still unread, but I know I won't be able to resist.
It’s so hard finding the balance between being excited about the new books and actually reading the ones we already have! I know I won’t get to all of these books next year, but it’s nice to at least know what is out there 😄
I haven't heard of most of these! 💜 I am excited to learn more about horror from you - it's something I'm kind of dipping into but isn't a go-to and isn't a genre I know the authors very well in. ARCs are up for the Buffalo Hunter Hunter though! I am really excited for that one. First half of 2025 releases I'm pumped for include (to name a few) "Harmattan Season" by Tochi Onyebuchi and a few new installments in series I love: "Days of Shattered Faith" by Adrian Tchaikovsky and "The Martian Contingency" by Mary Robinette Kowal.
City of Last Chances is available as an e-book from the library and I keep meaning to check it out as I have heard such good things about that series. Riot Baby is another one that is on my TBR but I haven’t read anything by Tochi Onyebuchi yet… the synopsis for Harmattan Season sounds intriguing. 💖
@@Bookishdowntime Both Riot Baby & Goliath knocked my socks off (in different ways, for different reasons); definitely suggest checking out Onyebuchi. "City of Last Chances," well, it's a weird series so far; I've heard book 1 likened to Les Miserables and book 2 likened to MASH; you can tell it's the same author but the books are very very different... yet cohesive. I don't know how Tchaikovsky writes so many books so quickly but I have yet to read one that I really didn't like.
Oh interesting, that actually makes me even more interested in picking up that first book. I’ve only read the one Tchaikovsky, Children of Time, and really enjoyed it. It’s also another series on my never ending list that I actually need to finish 🙈
Some interesting books. I can see why you look forward to getting them. I love the cover of They Bloom at Night. I wish I could offer some suggestions about upcoming Sci Fi books. Unfortunately, I don't read that many Sci Fi books anymore. And I am not good at learning about upcoming books.
I tend to read more backlist books than new releases to be honest and it’s only in the last couple of years that I have started to actively look out for upcoming releases.
New to your channel. Arrived via M-J’s channel. Loved this. I’m a bit of a nerd too 😂. Look forward to getting to know you better. Good luck with your channel 😊
Thank you for stopping by 😊 Nerds unite! 😆
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the new Grady Hendrix!
I’m worried I might be going into it with my expectations a little high, but I am just really excited for it. 😁
Great video! I love how creative it is! Best of luck to you on Booktube!
Thank you 💖 And thank you for watching.
Hello! Just discovered your channel through MJ. Wishing you great success with your new channel.
Thank you so much!! 💖
Sounds like great books. I'm going to have to look into that first one (the historical fiction...I'll have to go back and get the title). I haven't heard anything about it here, so it might now be slated for release in the US, but I could always get it from Blackwells.
It looks like you will be able to get it through Barnes & Noble.
That is one big book. The only books I know I will be reading in December are The Christmas Tree Farm by Laurie Gilmore and A Court Of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Mass. They are both for book clubs.
I have never read anything by Sarah J. Mass. Did you read ACOTAR, and what did you think of it?
@@Bookishdowntime I really liked it. If you are interested, i put my StoryGraph review of it below. I rated it 4 stars. This story is told in the first person by Feyre who is human. There are humans and fae In the world of the book. Feyre lives a couple of days journey from the fae lands. There is a wall separating human lands from fae lands. Feyre's family (Feyre's father and two older sisters) was once well to do. But they fell on hard times a few years back. They only survive because of Feyre's hunting skills. She needs to kill prey to provide meat and to get pelts that she sells to get money for other necessities. The story starts with Feyre hunting in the woods during a winter day. A deer comes in range of her bow. Before she can shoot the deer, a huge wolf appears. Feyre kills the wolf and the deer. She skins the wolf and takes the pelt and the dear deer back to her family. Not long after, a very angry fae comes to Feyre's family's cottage. The wolf Feyre killed was actually a fae who had shifted to wolf form. Feyre admits to the angry fae that she killed the wolf. As punishment, she has to spend the rest of her life in fae lands. The angry fae is Tamlin who is one of the Fae High Lords. The story goes from there. This book is a romantasy. Only the second I have read after Fourth Wing. There were a series of chapters early in the book where I didn't feel any threat to Feyre. They almost felt cozy. Once the book ramped up, the stakes got really high. It got very tense. Feyre was a believable heroine (some suspension of disbelief is necessary, but that is to be expected in a fantasy novel). I liked how the romance developed. There was impressive world building. Mostly the fae world is gradually revealed. There is one chapter that was info dumpy. There were some brutally violent scenes in the latter part of the book. The sex was mild. Not graphic at all. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to read a romantasy and who doesn't have a problem with the brutally violent scenes. I'm glad I finally read a Sarah J. Maas book. I already bought the sequel A Court of Mist and Fury.
Thanks for sharing. I am not sure I will ever get around to reading it but I’m always interested to hear reviews.
Of course you already have reading goals! 💜🤣 Looking forward to seeing them and your tracker. That feeling of "I can't believe I got this book" early on in Netgalley days is priceless -- so so exciting. Mine was P Djeli Clark's "A Master of Djinn."
I’m not saying I started working on my reading goals in October, but I am also not not saying that 🤣 I do love a good goal!
Really enjoyed this Heather ❤
Thank you Candy 💖
I like watching the negative review videos too. Even though I seldom do negative review videos. The only goal I have for next year at this point is to give myself easier to achieve book, page, and listening goals. I probably won't achieve the goals I set for this year
I don’t think it matters too much if you hit your goals, especially when they are around a hobby, but I also think people forget that goals are adjustable. If you set a goal for the year and it is obvious 6 months in that you’re not going to hit it, change it. I am constantly re-evaluating and amending my goals (when I have them). 🙂
@@Bookishdowntime Amending your goals is a good idea. I am too rigid with my goals.
I look forward to watching your new year planning videos!
Yay! Thank you! I am excited for all the planning 😆
I love this time of year too for planning heather. lovely video❤
Thank you! 💖 I still need to figure out what I am doing in terms of having a planner for next year, but I think it is likely I will bullet journal.
Awesome list! I'm a fan of a lot of the authors/books you mentioned. I hadn't heard of Osgood As Gone, but you've sold me on it and now I have to check it out!
Hope you enjoy it! 😁
I hadn't heard of your number one before but it sounds great so I'll definitely be keeping an out for it. How to sell a haunted house is my favourite Grady Hendrix so far, so creepy. I've read a few Stephen Kings but always been put off reading IT but maybe I should try it at some point.
If you do read either Osgood or IT I would love to hear your thoughts. Both of them have fantastic characters, which I think is why I personally love them so much.
I felt the same as you did about Dead Silence. I wanted the ending to go in the horror direction. One book you may want to look into is You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron. It’s an interesting take on the slasher/Summer camp/final girl tropes. Other books that I read recently that I really liked were Natural Beauty by Ling Ling Huang, Clowns Vs Spiders by Jeff Strand, and The Honeys by Ryan La Sala.
I just looked up Clowns Vs Spiders and it sounds hilarious… although spiders are something I am genuinely afraid of. I am definitely adding these recommendations to my TBR 😁
@@Bookishdowntime It is the funniest book I ever read. If you do read any of the books, I will be interested in what you think of them
Heather is a slasher girl! I love knowing this! I’ve never watched a horror movie ever…. I just can’t even though I’m getting better and I did love all the seasons of the walking dead so I suppose that’s a bit like horror…. But you are making me want to read these books. That’s so naughty of you my tbr is too long already 🖤
I love horror movies but I totally get that they are not for everyone. If you wanted to try some then there are a lot of films which are suitable for teens that I think would work well for a horror beginner. Films like “Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark” or the “Fear Street” movies on Netflix are not too scary for example. It’s really just about figuring out what you like. As for books, I highly support all of these being added to your TBR! 😂🖤
Thoroughly enjoyed your takes in these classics. Thanks for sharing! ❤
Thanks for watching Marlene 💖
Thanks Heather, I’ve read none of these yet. Ive enjoyed this format too ❤
I’m glad you enjoyed the format. It was fun to film this way but it’s good to know it was also enjoyable to watch as well 💖
I've read both Dracula and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I liked both. l like this format.
😁 I think I am going to do something similar for wrap-ups as I also liked this format.
Ha ha! The TBR jar has no mercy! I know you have some big ones, but they sound great!
It is SO many pages 😆 I am looking forward to reading them all (or at least as many as I can).
I really like John Wyndham ( my fave is The Midwich Cuckoos). The jar gave you a lot of big books this month 😅
Oh, that’s one I really want to read at some point. It sounds like one I will really enjoy. I feel like relying on the jar was not the smartest choice I have ever made 😂 I am not convinced I can read that many pages in 30 days.
The day of the triffids is great. I loved that Heather so fun. The pink witchy book sounds awesome ❤ can’t wait to hear how you get on with it all ❤
That is encouraging to hear. I did try a few chapters of the day of the triffids a few years ago and I do think I am going to really enjoy it. I’m tempted to start with it as it is the shortest on the list. 🤔
I hear you ….im currently 900 pages into the witching hour with over 200 pages still to read ❤
Are you enjoying it? I do love a chunky read but they end up taking me months to finish. 😁
@@Bookishdowntime oh im loving it!
@CandySoulAndSoil it’s been so long since I read an Anne Rice, maybe I should add it to my TBR.
Oh the tbr jar was kinda ruthless in regards to booklength, but still I think you got some great choices there!
The TBR jar was definitely not my friend when it came to book lengths 😆 We do like a challenge… apparently!
Love a TBR jar! I used to have one but then I would keep cheating by putting back any books I didn't want to read, which meant in the end it was just full of books I didn't care about 😅
😆 That is definitely a risk with using a TBR jar. I am going to try and be very deliberate about not putting things back, but we will see how it goes. 😬
I'm looking forward to following your videos. I think you do have a unique aspect and that is your lovely soft soothing voice, which is very pleasant to listen to. I have to ask though, and sorry if I missed you saying anything, but what is that noise at round about 19 minutes into the video. I've settled on a train going past, but am curious. Shell.
Thank you for your comment about my voice 😊 The noise was a double-decker bus. I live on a bus route with a stop not too far up the road and that is the noise they make when they are getting back up to speed after pulling away. It happens so regularly that I didn’t even notice it 😂
Thank you for settling that puzzle, I really couldn't decide what it was, my hubby guessed bus, so he gets the points. We have trains go past our house and I don't notice them any more. Cheers, Shell.
Ha, when books juuuuust on the cusp of 500pgs keep turning up. 🤣"Day of the Triffids" is one that we had to read in high school - I am sure it's changed by now but we had an oddly dystopian curriculum. It's been way too long to say if I think you'll like it; I don't even remember whether *I* liked it or not. The other day, I put my list of owned-but-unread ebooks into a spreadsheet - I could imagine using a random number generator or something to pick a TBR from there. ...but this feels too stressful! I think I'm not spontaneous enough for this.
I know! It’s over 3000 pages in total, which is a lot for me. This was possibly not my smartest idea ever 🤣 I would love to see you plan a randomly generated TBR but I do also love how deliberate and thoughtful your TBR’s always are.
Looks like some interesting books. Been a long time since I read a James Herbert book. I should read Ash to see what I think of his final book
It’s been a long time since I read a James Herbert as well, and I haven’t read that many to be honest. Which of his books have you read?
@@Bookishdowntime I read Sepulchre. I read Shrine. I read some of The Rats. Not sure if I finished it. I read some others too. Can't remember which. The one I remember is The Magic Cottage. It was the first one I read. I read it not long ago for a second time. I loved it both times.
The Magic Cottage is one I keep meaning to try and you have convinced me that I really do need to pick it up soon. My first James Herbert was Fluke. I got it out of the school library when I was 13 or 14 so I don’t really remember it all that well anymore. 😆
I use my library in the same way as well, it's so handy to reserve online and pick up when they're available. Plus that way you get to see what books are on the whole area's library service rather than just your local library (plus, amazingly, it's still free to reserve books where I live!)
It used to be free to reserve books but then they stopped charging late fees and added a 50p charge for this instead. It is such a small amount that I really don’t mind.
I was wondering what your tattoo was! I don't think I've ever read Alice but I'm planning on doing so. I loved the Disney film (it's the only Disney film I really liked. I think I just like weird stuff!). Which languages are you learning? I got one of those pillow things recently (although mines not a cute animal!) and it's great, very comfy.
I’m learning Korean and French. I am a bit more serious about Korean, whereas French is really just 30ish minutes of Duolingo a day. I also loved the Disney films of Alice, but I am also a huge Disney fan in general 😆
@@Bookishdowntime I was learning Portuguese on Duolingo (I had over a 1500 day streak) but it started becoming really repetitive and then Duo became really passive aggressive 🦉😂
That owl definitely has abandonment issues! 😂
