In my fantasy world I have Usain Bolt running against Carl Lewis and Jesse Owens at their prime, wearing the same brand shoes as available in 2024... and running in the most modern of running tracks. To be honest I don't know who'd win. But it's a nice fantasy.

Lyles has run 9.79 secs, the same time that Ben Johnson ran in 1988. Bolt however has run 9.58 and 9.69 which is light years faster in 100m terms. I can't see Lyles beating either of these times, though he'll try to convince the world he can. For someone with Covid, he did a lot of leaping around before the last race, didn't he.

That 19.19 is in danger I think Noah Lyles can do it if he's fresh and healthy and if he doesn't tebogo is coming for it pretty soon. The 200 is much more touchable than you think. For perspective the second fastest 100m time ever is 9.69 which is .11 seconds away from the world record while the second fastest 200m time ever 19.26 only .07 seconds away and Lyles is currently .12 seconds away which is much closer than the .11 in the 100m. Also worth noting is Lyles ran 19.31 when he was only a 9.95 guy in the 100 now he has ran 9.79 so his 200 could potentially be much faster. Tebogo on the other hand is only 21 and seeing what he did at this Olympics I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up breaking that record as he already holds the world record for the 300m.

The Gustavus Town Kirby Timing Device (GTKTD) was the first FAT device and was used originally to determine the correct order of finish in horse races in the late 1920's. In the early 1930's it was used in track and field sprint events. Ralph Metcalfe held the first 100 meter FAT world record of 10.62 (10.6 HT) at the 1932 Olympic Trials on July 16, 1932 which was broken almost 2 weeks later in the 1932 Olympic 100 meter final by both he and Olympic Gold Medalist Eddie Tolan on Aug 1, 1932 with a time of 10.38 (10.3 HT) seconds. This would remain the FAT world record until Barney Ewell broke it 15 years 11 months and 22 days later with a time of 10.35 (10.2 HT) seconds on July 9, 1948, which In turn was broken 11 years and 11 months later by Armin Hary with a time of 10.25 (10.0 HT) seconds on June 21, 1960. Hary held the FAT world record for 3 years and 7 months until Bob Hayes followed that up with his 1964 Olympic final run of 10.06 (10.0 HT) seconds on October 15, 1964. That record also lasted about 3 years and 7 months until Jim Hines ran 10.03 (9.9 HT) seconds on June 20, 1968 at the Night of Speed (NOS). Hines NOS run was the first time any sprinter clocked sub 10 seconds under any official legal timing conditions and is still the fastest that anyone has run 100 meters on a natural non-synthetic surface. It was the Sea Level WR for 12 years until James Sanford broke it in May of 1980 clocking 10.02 on UCLA's synthetic track. Officially it was the all conditions WR for about 4 months until Charlie Greene ran 10.02 (A) in the 4th quarterfinal at the 1968 Olympics on October 13, 1968. Greene's WR lasted for only 1 day as Hines ran his infamous 9.95 (A) FAT the very next day in the 100 meter final. Hines' 9.95 remained the world record for 14 years 8 months and 19 days, the longest so far in the OFFICIAL FAT era. Prior to 1977 only manual or Hand times (HT) were considered official for record purposes, Fully automatic timing (FAT) did not become mandatory for world records until 1 January 1977.

To date only Tyson Gay and Yohan Blake have been able to break the 9.7s barrier let alone 9.6 and both are retired. The world lead in 2024 is 9.77, a full 0.19 seconds away from the WR. I doubt any one of the elite athletes that are currently competing will get anywhere near Bolts 100m record. And from what I've seen, his record wont be broken until an elite sprinter as tall as he is comes along.
