How To Mix Purple (You NEED To Use This Special Colour!)
Blue + Red = purple, right? Okay, but red will not give you vibrant shades of purple, so you need to use something else. Today we'll show you how to mix purple that will POP. We'll be colour-matching these paint samples, showing you the process step-by-step
➤ LAST TIME: How To Mix Green th-cam.com/video/S0JgK_5jbKc/w-d-xo.html
Hello and welcome to The Gold Coast Art School channel!
This week we're mixing purple, a fantastic, exciting colour. But if you've tried mixing this yourself, you may have been left disappointed. Yes, you can make purple with red and blue, but it's often a more organic, muted, or dark purple. That might be exactly what you're looking for, but a lot of students are searching for brighter, more vibrant shades.
Today, Stephen shows you how to mix these bright purples using a special colour that is more like magenta. This particular paint colour is a special one to have in your kit! It behaves differently to red and pink when mixed with blue, and you'll love it.

    Hi, glad that I found this helpful video. I just ran into some trouble with glazing. I did my underpaint in acrylic and then added highlights with zinc white. Luckily I did my first try on just a test and I removed lots of the white in the areas where I put it very thin. I did mix 50/50 turpentine and linseed. Need I go more on the linseed side or what could caused that? Brush was a soft wash brush.

    • @GoldCoastArtSchool
      @GoldCoastArtSchool 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      A few things could have gone awry: - Was the paint absolutely dried before you used the glaze? Our students usually leave it at least a week before glazing, and they don't usually paint thick. - Did you use gum turpentine, or normal turpentine? Normal turpentine is a solvent and will remove paint. - Did you paint the whole picture fully in oils? If you just put a few dots of oils on top of an acrylic, this technique isn't likely to work. It's hard to know exactly as we're unable to see your process, but hopefully those points will help troubleshoot.

    Ufff they all look very bad, honestly you have to blend while it is still damp, once it has dried up you can try but it will never look as good as with wet paint.

    • @GoldCoastArtSchool
      @GoldCoastArtSchool 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I 100% agree that it's best to blend when wet! But sometimes our best plans fall apart and you have to figure it out, so that's what this video is all about. They don't look very bad, just not the ideal, and probably not what people imagine when using their acrylics.

    Would you suggest painting with the canvas upright or horizontal. For these demos your painting surface seems to be horizontal. Does it matter?

    • @GoldCoastArtSchool
      @GoldCoastArtSchool หลายเดือนก่อน

      Generally speaking, it doesn't matter for "normal" painting. But if you're trying to achieve different effects like dripping, then change how you place your canvas accordingly. We have a student who loves doing huge canvases with thick paint, liquid paints, lots of texture... she will work horizontal or vertical depending on her aim and what she needs the paint to look like at the end.

    • @GoldCoastArtSchool
      @GoldCoastArtSchool 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We try to keep paint going as long as possible, but once acrylic paint has dried you cannot reactivate it. It's a type of plastic polymer that can dry out very quickly once exposed to the air. If you have acrylic paint in your palette that you want to save, spray it with a little water and cover it with plastic. It will stay wet enough to use for a few weeks.

    Good video. Thanks. From Jacksons Art website : Refined Gum Turpentine is a colourless solvent distilled from pine sap. It is used to thin oil paint and to clean various printmaking tools of oil-based ink. It generally speeds the drying time of oil paint, and thus is especially useful for underpainting. Paints mixed with this Turpentine will dry slightly matte. Turpentine is a volatile and toxic material; please exercise due caution when using this product. Bottom line. Gum Turpentine is used for thinning oil paint, not for cleaning brushes. A local hardware store has lots of brush cleaning solvents like Clean Spirit. Though, brush manufacturer Rosemary & Co recommend only using specific brush cleaning soaps made with Olive Oil. Which I find is best to preserve some of my expensive brushes. The cheaper brushes, I use Clean Spirit or White Spirit to save money.

    Hi, I've just discovered your videos and I love them. I hope you're settling into your new school! Thanks for this helpful video. For my brushes, I cut a little bit off the end, drill into them with a fine bit and attach very small hooks. You do need to find some kind of rack or stand to hang them from, but that can be an interesting challenge. If I have to soak them I adapted a wire jewellery stand into a kind of tree that I can put a water container underneath so the brushes never touch the bottom of the container. I've also made stands out of creatively formed coat hangers to sit on my table when I'm using a lot of brushes at once so I never lay a brush down. I put dowel rods fixed horizontally on the insides of the doors of my cupboard and I hang all my brushes there when not in use. (Sadly, I get a nerdy sort of thrill seeing all my beloved brushes hanging in an orderly fashion.) This preserves brushes for years and years, not only keeping the hairs straight, but preventing moisture sitting inside the neck and affecting the glue which can happen when brushes are stored hairs upwards. It doesn't just save money, I get very attached to particular brushes. I don't know if this would work for the many brushes a school has, but for your own painting it is super helpful. Well, I've subscribed and will binge all your videos 🙂

    • @GoldCoastArtSchool
      @GoldCoastArtSchool หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is so great, you put a lot of time and care into preserving your brushes! When I wash our school brushes I try to dry them angled down to wick away the water from the bristles. But I'll be honest, we have so many kids (and some adults) who trash our brushes so I can't get too attached to any of them 😂 And a lot of the cheaper ones with plastic handles just can't be saved half the time. Bit of a bummer, but if you've found this process works for you then absolutely stick with it 👍

    *IT'S FINALLY DONE.* This move took so much more energy than I ever thought it could. And MONEY. Why is moving so expensive?! Oh well, it's done now. We're moved in, teaching, and looking forward to a new year of exploring the arts for 2024 🙂 Jess

    Wait...were those old...ice cube trays? *I have old ice cube trays on top of my fridge! What a dope I am!*

      Not a dope at all! A palette can be made out of a lot of things. The ice cube trays are great to hold more paint, but on the flip side are a pain to clean, haha. but give it a go! 🙂

      You're so welcome! It's tricky to blend dried paint, but practice and discover which technique works best for your artwork 🙂
