      Hello Les! Thank you very much for watching and taking the time to post. It was certainly not the easiest project, but workable in the end. I hope you'll enjoy some success on your stalled project. I hope you won't be too disapointed that my postings are far and few in between these days. A new job taken on in 2017 with a lot of responsibilities and time constraints had me at a choice to either build or publish on the tube. As editing and publishing is very time consuming, I opted to pretty much drop the channel to find enough time the follow my actual hobby. I still visit shows and build these days - witn a heavy emphasis on figure painting, which I picked up during Covod lock-down. However, I do feel in the mood to publish from time to time. Maaaaybeeee..... We'll see. Thanks again for your kind comment and take care! BAlle of my best wishes to you from Switzerland! Guido

    Hello, I'm returning to the hobby after many years away from it, now that I'm newly retired I finally have the time to dedicate. I choose to start with the Academy Graf Spee because it was on offer at a very reduced price (a bit over 30 dollars), purchased also the Eduard PE set which has not arrived yet, and while researching the subject I came across your video series ... thanks a lot for all the useful tips :)

    In what order of paint did you use for painting the deck? Were they thinned down like tint or like regular paint? I really enjoyed your tutorials on painting wooden decks

    • @bilk1968
      @bilk1968 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually there is no particular order. As a rule fo the thumb I went from darker to lighter colours. The paints are thinned down to pass through the airbrush easily, you could use both layers or glazing. The aim is to get loads of different shades on the deck before you spray all over with unifying glazes. As long as the contrast are not too harsh, you can`t really go wrong. No exact science here, trust your feeling and develop your own level of comformt with the method. Most important: Enjoy the process. Thank you for tuning in! Cheers!

    I think you dud an amzing job with this kit. Not to shit on you but the interior color you were looking for is sea foam green. idk if thats commercially available. The floor under the driver station is the same dark green as the deck plates and that also goes for driver side lateral cover and floor in front of where the radio stack and tool box goes. The standard SL3 issued tool box is red not green. The personnel heater is also supposed to be dark green. But awesome job all in all

    Hello! Beautiful video! Can you briefly explain how you separated the hull to create the waterline version?

    • @bilk1968
      @bilk1968 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your kind comment. The Academy's kit hull has a groove along the inside of hull halves providing a guide to split it. Any good scriber should do. First scribe until the bottom comes off. Clean the cut edge. Have the bottom plate ready as provided by the the kit. First connect the hull halves, then add the bottom plate. Make sure the model will sit dead flat and let the glue thoroughly before continuing construction.

    Probably the most Legendary Ship of WWII. Langsdorf is considered a hero by all countries. He saved thousands of lives including British Sailors. Merchant and Military Sailors such as my dad who was in the U.S. Navy during the war. He spent two years on a Destroyer in the Atlantic and two years on a PT Boat in the Pacific. As a young child I watched the Movie about the Admiral Graf Spee with my dad. When the Langsdorff scuttled the beautiful but tough ship my dad had tears in his eyes. I asked him why are you crying? He said what Langsdorff did took more courage than if he had come out fighting. He said son I saw many a ship go under and I can't explain the terrible feeling you get even if it is your enemy. Langsdorff sunk 9 to 10 Merchant Ships without one life being taken. He didn't treat his prisoners like the enemy. Langsdorff through a Christmas Party for his prisoners and he let them walk freely on deck. He even made friends of them. Ask the children of the men on those ships and the men on the Ajax and Achilles if Langsdorff is a hero?

      Langsdorf should have fought his way out of harms way and at least tried to make it home

      @Donald DiMiceli I have often thought about that as many have. The Spee's Fuel System was damaged and it could only sail about 12 Knotts. Langsdorf probably could have took out a ship. But it was a suicide mission. The Spee couldn't out sail the British Fleet damaged like the ship was. What I understand she took about 60 hits and still was floating. In its day the Spee was a Marvel

      @@kurtsherrick2066 it’s water storage system, and galleys were fucked up. She was low on ammunition. Still, Exeter and Ajax would have been pummeled and unable to follow if not sunk. He bought the British bullshit that the whole Navy laid in waiting.

      @Donald DiMiceli Everything you said is true. Yes Langsdorff was fooled thinking a big Fleet had shown up. The Spee could have sunk the Exeter. The Spee took it out of the battle. You may be right about the Spee possibility taking out the Ajax and Achilles. But it would have probably been impossible to make it to a Safe Port especially Germany without being sunk. Langsdorff may have tried it if he wasn't fooled. Langsdorff wasn't a NAZI. He was a good man stuck in a terrible situation. I can't think of the Merchant Ship Captain that broke his word to Langsdorff and sent out the location of the Admiral Graf Spee. That was the one man Langsdorff should have maybe Court Marshalled. One thing a Captain or Military Officer should never do is break his word. It was a dishonorable thing to do.

    I saw a 1:350 Graf Spee by Acadamy for a good price recently, and remembered these build videos, so was inspired to give it a go and made the purchase. Am also interested in the earlier years, so will enjoy reviewing your build videos for reference and inspiration before starting. Thanks for posting this build log.

    Great work on this. Interesting that you cut all the photo etch railing parts with sharp cutter, I've always used the small sharp scissors on a Swiss Army Knife, which cuts any photo etch part (particularly railings) very sharply and precisely, including cutting off the tiny attachment points to leave a totally clean straight edge, and to shorten a single piece of railing by cutting the stanchion off and trimming the railings shorter (then re-attaching the stanchion). Just sharing this if it may be useful to anyone.

      Cheers Rob! Of course goods scisors do the job just fine. I used to do that, but changed at some point to using cutter blades. I can't even say why I did it.
