    Do you think a single edge bevel on the wings of the four way wedge would help with the binding?

    • @mikegroat7732
      @mikegroat7732 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it would still want to bind. The wood needs room to move 'down' and I have enough room now for good straight wood, but some wants to open up more and there just isn't room.

    Build 'em how you like - splitting wood will bend stuff. The key thing is to then build that bit better so it keeps splitting wood. If it was easy, everyone would do it. I've grown tired of hydraulic splitters - they're too slow, even the "fast" ones, so I built a continuous action diesel powered mechanical one - it's about 30 times faster than any hydraulic one going, but the forces involved are immense, so even sturdy steel bends - today it bent a bit of steel I would have sworn could never get bent - but bend it did when a gnarly bit of timber got in the way. It split an awful lot of timber before that bit bent - I'll build that bit a bit stronger tomorrow & go find the next weak spot. There's always a "next weak spot" if you're building fast stuff. Key is to fix 'em, not cissy out & quit.

Using the u-bolt will support it, but will still allow some minor movement.👍🏼 I’ll look into doing the same. Dad’s cylinder broke last year. The threaded end of the shaft broke off. At full extension there’s a lot of strain. Multiply those forces by the tens or even hundreds of thousand cycles over a 15 year period and something is likely to break. Bless’ns to ya, Tedd

  • @stacieernsberger1142
    @stacieernsberger1142 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you do calculations on sizing motor? Your size motor is giving you excess speed and very low torque (power). You need a motor approximately double the displacement of that one. You need to turn at approximately 350-400 RMP in my opinion. You are currently turning above 800. There are online hydraulic motor calculators.

    • @mikegroat7732
      @mikegroat7732 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is, that Bobcat is small, only has 11gpm flow. It won't run a bigger hydraulic motor. I have since sold that one and bought a 853 and changed out the hydraulic motor on the brush hog.

      Are you looking to use like a 16' hay conveyor, or a real long one? I bought pretty much everything from Surplus Center. I ran a gas engine which runs about 3600rpms, so I had to double up the pully reduction. If you use an electric motor, they are 1740-1800rpms, so you more than likely wouldn't need to double reduce like I did.
