Despite its short history, a Bergen County military base would play an important role in world history. From 1917 to 1919, it was from this camp that one million soldiers were assembled and deployed to Hoboken, before being shipped off to the battlefields of the Western Front. This episode of "Greetings from Bergen County" brings us to Camp Merritt, circa 1918.

What's the name of that 50ish music playing
At 2:19 shows bridge over Hackensack River, in Leonia? I don't think so!!! I remember the "old" bridge going over the creek that was replaced in the early 60's and it did not look like that.
Thank you Brian...this is fabulous. I grew up in Leonia from 1957 to 1970. I love this view of the incredible history that went before my time.
This is very fascinating I’m close to Fairview. I hang out there most of the times. Does anyone remember any barbershops in the 1960s and before. Unfortunately there aren’t any old school barbershops anymore
We lived on Cliff Street before moving to Bogota...Our Mother was born in that house. I remember Lee Bo the Barber.....
That’s very cool.Do you remember what was at 57 Anderson ave by any chance?
I grew up on Quackenbush Ave near Honiss school in the 60's, 70's and 80's... This looks way nicer than it did than!
Born at Hackensack Hospital in ‘01 and frequented the community at my dads church on James Street up until he left us. It’s amazing to see what it was so long ago 💯
What? (At 2:11) No traffic on Rt 4? It looks so desolate! Must be an alternate/parallel world from a Stephen King novel or something...
Great memories and so much is still here
😂 Hii anyone here speaks Spanish English
Coytesville never new about it
this has been awesome!!!!
Thanks for this.
Born and raised in Englewood 1970....left in 2002 and havent been back....lovely video and some serious memories
I never knew that building was rhe Buena Vista Hotel. Fascinating!
Amazing!
Love
That was really good! I grew up in Fairview, and this brought to mind the terms we had such as "Lower Fairview", "Below the hill" "Dan Kelley's", Nunguessers. It's been many years since I've been there, but always nostalgic.
How come as soon as you get to full frame you immediately switch? Don’t even get a second to visualize where we are observing! Why don’t you extend those times in the full frame?
My friend John Dowd, an artist, bought the house at 1.39 in the video. The day he came home from signing the papers for the house, I was standing beside it and started pulling the aluminum siding off, he freaked out and started yelling for me to stop, but I didn't and underneath the siding was the gorgeous house you see in that post card.
Thanks for sharing. I've been a fan of John's art since my first visit to Ptown in the mid-80's, when I saw one of his prints at the Kennedy Studios gallery. It hangs in my home office to this day.
the house on 157 Prospect Street with tall tower just listed today at $1,200,000.(I used to live there)

AT 10:05 MINUTES YOU WILL SEE " LYRIC "...THAT WAS A FABRIC SHOP WHEREAS MY GRANDFATHER WORKED THERE....LOUIS ELKIN...
1:38 railroad photo- I don't believe that is Montvale.
Beautiful!
I really enjoyed this thank you! I grew up in Fairview and it’s so nice to see the vintage photos
I appreciate the kind words! Glad you enjoyed it.
The song is "Around the World" by Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester
Music by Zero 7, I believe?
@Leslie pretty sure it's Thievery Corporation
LOVE 'Zero 7'! Those were some of Sia's best years with them!
Absolutely ❤️❤️❤️❤️ love this video it’s a keepsake
Absolutely love this video. It’s a keeper
Hudson street kid from 75-95. No matter where I’ve lived since I always felt Hackensack was my home
Thank you for your great videos Brian. I absolutely love the bossa nova song. I tried Googling it, but no luck. Who is the artist and the name of the song?
I appreciate the kind words. This song is called "Pura Saudade"(I think) by Fantastic Plastic Machine.
@@roycrofterephemera Thank you Brian.
Spent thirty two years in Ridgefield Park from when I was born in 1973 to 2005. Grew up living at 23 Grand Ave then moved to 34 Emerson St around 1989. My grandfather was a police officer in town in the 60's and 70's. They lived on Poplar St behind the funeral home on the corner of main.
The music does not fit the video.
F. Messler in the horse buggy was my great, great grandfather, Fredrick. I’m blown away at finding this. Holding the horse is one of his sons, who bears a strong resemblance to my father, George. Fredrick’s daughter, Maria, married Charles Blankenhorn, and their daughter Louise was my grandmother.
Loved this! We lived in River edge from 1956 to 1978…my sister and i attended St. Peter the apostle school and my younger siblings attended Roosevelt school.
Great pictures but stupid music.
Great music. Fits the postcards perfectly.
Amazing! My grandmother Irene Miller lived here circa 1923....with her second husband...life must have been so optimistic as she strolled the streets shopping.
I’m sorry ! But this Video Did not do Justice to Woodcliff Lake ! I moved their at 4 yrs old in 1954 till 1973 then Back again 2003 till 2017 ! And Inhave some really Fond memories ! The ppl who made this video never showed the personable side ! The Best Farms in Bergen County ! Tices Farm , Van Ripers ! The Little Stores like Fuscos ! They Never Showed 4th of July in 1954 the Parades then at Night sitting in a Cowpasteyr on the Wrights Farmland ! Of which sometimes we would have a Stray Cow or Horse in our Backyard ! Never showed Opening day of Little League where we’d March from the Woodcliff Lake School to the Old Mill Pond ! Which was across the Street from Mr. Rogers Gasoline Station and Garden Center on Wiermus Rd ! We also had Memorial Day Parades and Picnics of which my Father made the Memorial concrete emblem in front of the Fire House and still Stands He Volunteered 8 yrs ! These were My Memories of the Woodcliff Lake I grew up in ! Simpler Times ! But BETTER Times ! People were More Caring in the Neighborhoods I knew Everyone in my 2 block Radius ! And We NEVER Locked our House !
I love this series and if you are familiar with Bergen county you can still see a lot of these old homes and buildings that have survived. Not sure the music fits?
I love this series. So many locations are still recognizable all these years later..Thank you for putting it together.
Thanks so much for this! I'm a New Jersey expatriate living in Virignia now. VA's a good place to live but it's not "home," if you know what I mean. Loved the shots of the Tenafly station. My father grew up in Tenafly and my grandparents lived ther until the 1960's, so it was like a second home town to me.
Yes I remember steam trains. I can still hear them
Does anyone have any sort of images of the Hackensack Driving Range that was located on 411 Hackensack Ave where the TGI Fridays is located now? If so, please post or email images to clay2ali@webgalleria.com. Thank you.
I used to live here. I was also born here and grew up here. I moved to S.C. about 2 years ago and I miss Rutherford SO much. I can still remember most of the buildings in the postcards.
My hometown 🧡
I am from Hackensack, from birth, 5/47 to age 12 on Moore St and then moved to Spring Valley Ave till i was 22 and moved to other places in Hackensack.
I find it amazing that people have lived under many roofs on different streets, even those who stay close to home, while others traveled to other places, living in so many different states, I lived in Three Countries and many states, as my NJ born Dad served in Navy, then Army, so NJ was my stop off and I lived in several cities, towns in Bergan County, but found Sussex County home for a long while, Now I am in Vermont, the last place I will call Home,
I'm a New Yorker, but moved to Ridgefield Park and raised my kids there. Great place to raise a family.
Thanks Brian! I grew up there from From 1952 until 1965.. We roamed the woods, I lived almost all the way up to the 7th hill.. near the house of Gloria Swanson... It was a great childhood.
Thank you, Brian.. I spent my HS days in Englewood attending DMHS 62 thru 64... Left in 1968.... BTW: It puzzles me when folks give it a thumbs-down. Maybe they don't realize how much time and effort it takes to put something like this together,
I wish they would indicate the streets in the video
