All of these singers are crying all the way to the bank to cash their very large checks. This is one person's opinion only. Please don't take what 1 person says as gospel. There is no accounting for taste. Opera listeners cannot relive the past except through recordings. Yes, there were some fantastic singers in the 1900's. But there are some fantastic singers singing today. When one compares, one gets very unhappy. We must think of what people hear who have never heard the past crop of singers. There will never be another Bjorling, Corelli, Del Monaco, Bastianini, Warren, Merrill, Milanov, Nilsson, Sutherland, Barbieri, Cossotto, Verrett, etc. Enjoy the current crop of singers because they have their own unique sound. Singers like Florez, Camarena, Kaufmann, Yoncheva, Salsi, etc. There are those that I, personally, don't like, but I won't get in the way of those who enjoy their singing. As I said, there is no accounting for one's taste and we do not have to account for ours.

I've never liked opera because it all sounds the same. It's like compressed music, there are no dynamics to the voice. An untrained listener can't tell the difference between the singers. Rock music revealed the dynamic potential of the human voice, (and not only of the voice, but of other instruments, as well). Someone who has never heard Mariah or Whitney can tell that they are different singers. I believe that's why rock music has become so much more popular than classical. And modern opera singers are probably trying to emulate the dynamics of rock singers.

Unless you can sing, and teach better than all of these greats, and the students performing, don’t disrespect them like this. Especially for the greats, whatever they did worked for them and they got careers out of it.

Opera plots are simple? I don't think so. Opera plots are convoluted, often times ridiculous and nonsensical. Still I love opera and intend to die listening to it. Btw, this old recordings don't do justice to the singers, some sound really bad.

Adriana Ferrarese, Mozart's Fiordiligi, always sang arias where she could showcase her low register, often with extremly big leaps to high notes (a technique called canto di sbalzo). How absurd to think that this was her "weak register", when she explicitly asked composers to write this kind of music!!!!!!

The issues in the “wobble” examples are very obvious to me (and frankly, this sound is everything that is wrong with modern opera), but I just can’t hear or understand the problem with the “tremolo” section. They all sound lovely to me. And is the poster claiming that abdominal vibrations/contractions are desirable on legato phrases? I absolutely cannot get behind that.

But you're making a terrible mess of it. You're comparing completely random different types of voices and recordings, and you're mixing your opinions on the aesthetics of singing with instructions on how to teach singing technique. You're taking things out of context, and the only truth for you is nostalgia for something that's gone.

Personally, I love caviar but realize it’s not to everyone’s taste. If you’ve tried something a number of times without acquiring a taste for it, then move on and eat things you like or try something else. I know I don’t like licorice or campari because I’ve given them a few chances from time to time. But I have such an effortless passion for opera that I made it my vocation and sang and directed opera professionally for over fifty years. If you give something a sincere try, don’t beat yourself up because it doesn’t click. Move on to something that more readily engages you and leave opera to those of us who are hopelessly smitten. “De gustibus non disputatem” as the Germans say in Latin.

I am far from being opera expert. But I sincerely do not understand what is nice in singing of these 2 ladies, which were shown after Netrebko, as an example of singing etc. For me even badly sung opera is better than modern pop music in english. Netrebko was very beautiful in her younger days, now she is fat and vulgar, but still sounds better than these pop monkeys-). And when she was young she was way more beautiful than both of them. And speaking of opera being popular...it was popular only among aristocrats, rich people etc. Now it is available even for more people.

Nilsson was trying to get the student to not just pull up the chest voice by force, which is solid advice. The tough part is that he would need to first find an easier way to sing his higher notes and then *develop* them into being bigger and stronger, which simply can't be accomplished in a single masterclass.

As a spinto tenor I can say I love dark voices and the moments when I have to get really dark in my singing, but this whole video is so messed up in concepts and the childish intention behind it. I don't personally like Florez's singing or technique but I can almost guarantee the person that did this video has never studied operatic technique, much less being in a masterclass in person. The baby laughters get nefarious by the second or third time, I feel like my 60yo reactionary uncle made this video in Movie Maker.

You don't really know what you're talking about. Both DiDonato and Fleming were trying to lighten the voice in a particular area of the aria. Darkness is not always the goal. Callas gave the same advice in her masterclass for the end of Mimi 's aria. Fleming in that moment was teaching the student how to float. Which very few singers ever achieve. Battle was a master at floating. Having different colors and techniques (bright and dark) in one's arsenal is a strength. Especially for light and lyric Sopranos.
